Dr.V.Rajamani Principal

I am very proud and delighted to release the 4th edition of the ’IGNITION - 2017-18’,

the Newsletter of the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which embraces the

Achievements of the faculty members and the students. I am very happy to meet

you through this page. Vel Tech Multi Tech has stood above the rest in its approach

to education and in its pedagogies. The ways we teach and the ways our students

learn are unique and creative. Education is not an act of acquiring knowledge but

learning a skill to lead life and forming one’s personality. Many constructive efforts

have been taken to improve our college results. As campus placements are

progressing, efforts to groom the students to serve the society are also in pace. I can

boldly say that the Department of Mechanical Engineering, has excelled in every

initiative that has been undertaken and have stood together in facing the challenges

in realizing quality education. I wish to record my hearty congratulations to those

Here comes the 2017-18 Edition! Our students have demonstrated their capabilities

and brilliance by securing internship in highly reputed international organizations.

Our faculty members and students regularly present their research findings in

various academic conferences. We are very proud to tell you that we have signed

MOU’s with leading industrial organizations. This Newsletter highlights the

academic achievements of the Department of Mechanical Engineering during the

period, 2017-18

In an organization any initiative needs to be celebrated and treasured. As we embark

on the task of transforming the Institution into one of the premier institutes

globally, we have introduced innovative programmes; signed MOU’s and created

partnerships with various industries and academia in order to meet the growing

demands of existing and prospective students.

There shall be many other publications down the line, this one shall always remain

special for the Department, the Institution, the faculty members and students. The

Department of Mechanical Engineering in its short existence of 12 years has made

rapid strides towards evolving into a centre of excellence in all fields of academics.

The contents of this newsletter bear ample testimony to this fact. We hope to

To become a centre of eminence in educating students to become triumphant mechanical

engineers.

To endue the students with the fundamentals of mechanical engineering with a passion

for lifelong learning of industry practices.

To propagate lifelong learning.

To impart the right proportion of knowledge blended with attitudes and ethics in

students to enable them take up positions of responsibility in the society and make

significant contributions.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is an energetic and emerging department

started in the institution during the year 2006. It was started with the initial sanctioned

strength of 60 intake of students and increased to120. The Department has been accredited

by NBA for 3 Years and Anna University has recognized with permanent affiliation. The

Department has well furnished laboratories, highly qualified faculty members with passion

for both in teaching and research and supports them to take up positions of responsibility

in the society and make significant contribution. The Department has fetched a Gold

medal in AICTE-CII survey. Innovative projects of the students such as Versatile Bicycle,

Crankless engine, Wheel chair have won awards and accolades in forums such as ICTACT,

SAE etc. with around the year activities. Through the Professional Body Society of

Automotive Engineers (India)”, our students continuously enrich knowledge base in

‘Mobility Engineering’ and are contributing to the ‘Service and Humanity’. The

Department is marching ahead towards the needs of the industry to complete with the

growing technology for Nation development.

The innovative teaching and research activities are brought into limelight with the support

of our faculty members who are well qualified and experienced in their fields of study. The

department is well structured and built up with more spacious and ventilated class rooms.

AICTE - CII Award— The Department was honored with PLATINUM Award

for the Best Department in Institute - Industry Interaction.

Permanent Affiliation— The Department is Permanently Affiliated to Anna

University

Research Grant — A grant of 39.76 Lakhs was received by Dr.S.T. Selvamani

from DST - SERB and a total of 51 Lakhs stands as completed projects.

TNSCST Research Fund— The Department has received the research fund from

TNSCST for 2 Projects

Research Lab— HYUNDAI Sponsored Research Laboratory Facility is set up to

inculcate the knowledge of the students beyond syllabus catering to Industry

Needs

Patents— 37 Patents are filed and 7 are Published

Publications— 70+ Publications in SCOPUS Indexed and 225 Publications in

other referred journals.

Professional Society— Active Member of SAE and Active Participation in

Professional Body Events

Innovation— Students have established themselves as strong Innovators and

Alumni Meet is a gathering of passed out students of an institution and it is a place where the institution

REJOICE 2018 on 26.01.18.

Apart from the regular curriculum, Vel Tech Multi Tech focuses on the improvement of student’s knowledge in

various fields by way of conducting training programs with relevant experts in the related field of engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering along with SAE INDIA conducted a 2-Day (16.03.18 &

17.03.18) Workshop on Student Knowledge Improvement Program.

Mr.Venugopal, Scientist, CVRDE, Avadi addressed the students on the topic 'AUTOMOTIVE

TRANSMISSION'. 75 students from the 3rd and 4th year of Mechanical Engineering participated in the

programme and got benefited.

ICSEMR 2018

Vel Tech Multi Tech has successfully conducted one of the most important events of the year,

‘INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON SCIENCE ENGINEERING & MANAGEMENT RESEARCH -2018’.

It is the largest conference which aims to provide a common platform for Researchers, Academics,

Technocrats and Industry people to exchange their research challenges encountered and the solutions

adapted to the international audience. More than 110 participants from various parts of the country

presented their paper in the conference.

TECHYUGAM’18

Vel Tech Multi Tech conducted Techyugam’18, A State Level Project Expo cum Contest on 23rd March

2018. It was a platform where young innovators displayed their new ideas. More than 120 students from

the department of Mechanical Engineering from different parts of the state participated in the event and

displayed more than their projects. Various projects based on the innovative ideas were awarded. Projects as

Design & fabrication of electronically controlled compression moulding machine to produce gears, Hydro

Bike, tilling machine using cam mechanism, Safe Escaping System In Car, Agrobot, Fussion F8 Strokes,

Power Generation From Over Head Tank were awarded the best project awards based on the innovative

ideas and the reviews made by the expert team.

As part of the curriculum, the students have to undertake In-plant Training at the end of the semester,

during the semester holidays. The objective of the training is to expose the students to the working of an

organization, thereby getting acquainted with day to day practice. This would help them to relate

theoretical concepts to sound industry practices.

To convert the innovative ideas of the student that use technology to solve real-world problems into real-

world startup companies, the Entrepreneurship Development Cell of Vel Tech Multi Tech conducted Start

Up Multi Tech Contest 2K’18 on 23.03.18.

Since the beginning, trees have furnished us with two of life’s essentials, food and oxygen. As we evolved,

they provided additional necessities such as shelter, medicine, and tools. Today, their value continues to

increase and more benefits of trees are being discovered as their role expands to satisfy the needs created by

our modern lifestyles.

Considering the importance of trees and keeping in mind about the future generation, the Final year

students from the Department planted 50 plant samplings near the football ground, STP plant & the PG

block.
