Colleagues, As we pass the half-way mark in the academic year, I am delighted to report that the metrics of departmental performance are quite posive: our clinical volume (wRVU’s, visits, discharges, clinical collecons) are posive relave to AY 17 and to budget; research funding has increased substanally in AY 18 compared to AY 17; and although we have a slight operang deficit through December 31, 2017, our operang margin is $900,000 beer than budget. The outstanding performance of the department is a tribute to the remarkable efforts of our faculty, staff, and trainees. We are well-posioned to help the Boston Accountable Care Organizaon succeed starng March 1, 2018. The ACO will require us to think differently about clinical volume and outcome measures, and how we fairly distribute revenue and expense in a capitated reimbursement model. The fundamental principles of evidence-based, paent-centered clinical decision-making and a commitment to value-based clinical care will connue to be crical for all of our paents, regardless of whether or not they are enrolled in the ACO. We have the privilege of being part of an excing iniave to improve the care of the Medicaid paent populaon across Massachuses and to do so under the constraints of a more sustainable cost structure. Colleagues,

As we pass the half-way mark in the academic year, I am delighted to report that the metrics of departmental performance are quite positive: our clinical volume (wRVU’s, visits, discharges, clinical collections) are positive relative to AY 17 and to budget; research funding has increased substantially in AY 18 compared to AY 17; and although we have a slight operating deficit through December 31, 2017, our operating margin is $900,000 better than budget. The outstanding performance of the department is a tribute to the remarkable efforts of our faculty, staff, and trainees. We are well-positioned to help the Boston Accountable Care Organization succeed starting March 1, 2018. The ACO will require us to think differently about clinical volume and outcome measures, and how we fairly distribute revenue and expense in a capitated reimbursement model. The fundamental principles of evidence-based, patient-centered clinical decision-making and a commitment to value-based clinical care will continue to be critical for all of our patients, regardless of whether or not they are enrolled in the ACO. We have the privilege of being part of an exciting initiative to improve the care of the Medicaid patient population across Massachusetts and to do so under the constraints of a more sustainable cost structure. I look forward to learning more from each of you about how we can most effectively fulfill this important responsibility! I hope you enjoy this edition of the department’s electronic

newsletter!

Department of Medicine Evans Research Days October 12-13, 2017

The Evans Department of Medicine would like to thank everyone who participated in the two-day Evans Department of Medicine Research Days. We are pleased by the amount of abstracts that were submitted and presented at the poster session. The two-day event featured Distinguished Clinical and Basic Lectures (Dr. Katrina Armstrong, MD Ingelfinger Visiting Professor and Dr. Nancy J. Cox, PhD, Wilkins Visiting Professor), which serve as touchstones of the excellence to which we all aspire. The poster and oral presentations of ongoing research demonstrate our vigorous present and promising future. There was a buzz in the Hiebert Lounge and the excitement and enthusiasm were contagious! A passion for research and individuals excited to share knowledge permeated the event.

Name: Robina M. Bhasin

Job title: Director, Faculty Development & Diversity, DOM; Director, Faculty Development, BUMC

Location: Evans 116

How many years have you been in at BU/BUMC? 5

What do you do at BU/BUMC? Our office strives to foster an inclusive and collaborative environment that supports the faculty in advancing their careers in ways that are personally meaningful, and that contribute to public health through excellence in education, research, and clinical care. In collaboration with my fabulous faculty development colleagues, I develop, implement, and evaluate longitudinal career development and leadership programs for early career, mid-career, women, and under-represented in medicine faculty members. We also offer a seminar series and individual career consultations for all faculty, and seek to improve faculty diversity and career flexibility policies and resources across the BU Medical Campus. In addition, specifically in the DOM, I oversee faculty development grants and faculty networking dinners. If you haven’t participated in at least one of these offerings, you should!

What do you like best about your job? In a nutshell, the people. I really love the amazing faculty members I collaborate closely with and get to know through our longitudinal programs. I am inspired by the social justice and public health missions that drive so much of their work. I never had any capacity whatsoever to be a physician or scientist myself, but I find great meaning in being able to support the careers of people that I think are doing very important work in the world. I also have to say that I feel incredibly lucky to have Emelia Benajmin as my boss. I deeply admire her passion to make academic medicine a better place than she found it and I have learned an incredible amount by being able to work so closely with her over the past five years. What do you like least about your job? Scheduling meetings :-)

What do you wish more people knew about your job? That the programs and resources we offer exist. We try really hard to get the word out but there are always faculty members who say they have never heard about what we do. I’d love to have an even wider spectrum of faculty take advantage of our faculty development programs.

Favorite lunch spot? Recently I have become obsessed with Anoush’ella – delicious Lebanese/Middle Eastern food on the corner of E. Newton and Washington Streets. On the rare occasion that I go out for lunch, I love going there.

Favorite thing to do outside of work? I have a 2.5 year old and a six-month old, so in addition to spending time with them, I love finding time to connect with friends, ideally with a glass of wine too!

Fun Fact: I am the child of immigrants from two different countries and have always had a passion for all things that bring people of different backgrounds together. I have also long enjoyed learning new languages and traveling internationally, though the latter has become less fun at the moment since it involves bringing little kiddos with me! ;)

Members of the Thrombosis and Hemostasis ARC headed by Drs. Vipul Chitalia, Jean Francis and Katay Ravid collaboratively published a study in Science Translational Medicine reporting a discovery of new pathways to thrombosis in chronic kidney disease (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/29167396). The study, co-supported by the ARC, was selected for the cover of the Journal and for commentary in the Journal Nature. The corresponding author Dr. Chitalia and co-senior investigator Dr. Ravid emphasize “Diverse expertise and a collaborative spirit of trainees and Junior faculty, such as Drs. Shashar, Belghasem, Kolachalama and Matsuura were key to this study.”
