6WithdrawalPolicyBeginningtheFallsemester2007,up to six (6) 'W' grades may be used by an undergraduate student in his or her UH career. UniversityRequirements/RegulationsResidencyRequirementsStudentsmustcompleteatleast25percentofthesemesterhoursrequiredforadegreeinresidence(attheUniversityofHoustonmaincampus).Theseresidencyhoursarenottoincludecreditbyexamination,specialproblems,orindividualresearchcoursestakenattheUniversityofHouston.The30‐hourresidencystartsthesemesterafterthedateofthelasttransfercourse(i.e.the30hrresidencyforastudentwhotransferredasummercoursestartsinthefall;residencyforastudentwhotook/transferredafallcoursestartsinthespring).Allwintermini‐sessionsareconsideredpartoftheSpringsemester,thus the 30 hour residency at UH starts in summer. For example,coursescompletedduringDecember2009(winterterm)willpostintheUHsystemas“Spring2010”courses.ScholasticRequirement(2.0cumulativeGPArequired)TheUniversityofHoustonrequiresthatstudentsofallclassificationsmaintainaminimumcumulativeGPAof2.00toremainingoodacademicstanding.Whenastudent’sGPAfallsbelow2.00,oneofthefollowingacademicstandingcategorieswillapply:

Suspension:Regardlessofclassification,studentsonacademicprobationwhofailtoearna2.0 semesterGPAareplacedonsuspension. During the first suspension, studentsarenotallowedtoreturntocampusforonesemester. Thesecondsuspensionisforaperiodofatleast12months.StudentswhoaresuspendedathirdtimeareineligibletoreturnandearnadegreeatUHmaincampus.

HonorRequirementsStudentswhosefirstsemesteratUHwaspriortoFall2010mustcompleteaminimumof66hoursatUH main campus and meet the following grade point averages will qualify for honors. Transferstudentsmaynotusemorethan6hoursofCLEP/credit‐by‐examtosatisfythe66hourrequirementforhonors.Honorsarecalculatedbasedonthelastsixty‐sixhoursofcoursework.SummaCumLaude 3.75‐4.00 withhighesthonorsMagnaCumLaude 3.50‐3.74 withhighhonorsCumLaude 3.25‐3.49 withhonorsStudentsfirstenrolledatUHonorafterFall2010mustcompleteaminimumof54hoursatUHandhaveaGPAof3.5orhigher.

The last30hoursprior tograduation MUST becompleted at the UH(maincampus)only.Dualenrollment with otherschoolsisnotallowed.

UHD,Victoria,SugarLand,UHCL,&othersatellitecampusesareconsideredtransfercredits.

Repeat/Remedial/LastAttemptRulesHoursfromRemedialcoursescannotapplytowardsthedegree.ENGL1300,READ1300,andMATH1300willonlycountforestablishing“fulltimestatus”forhealthinsurance,financialaid,orhousingpurposes,butwillnotbecountedtowardsthedegree.RepeatCoursesArepeatcourseisanycoursetakenmorethanonce.CoursesmaybetakentwicetoraiseGPA,however,thecoursewillonlycountoncetowardsthetotalhoursneededforgraduation.Eventhoughthecoursewastaken3times,only3credithours(not9hrs)willbecountedtowardsthedegree.Studentsmayonlyreceivecreditforacourseonceregardlessofthenumberoftimestheyattemptit.BestAttemptWhenacourseisrepeated,onlythebestattemptwillcounttowardsatisfyingdegreerequirements.GradeReplacementUHdoesNOToffergradereplacement.Allattemptsatacoursewillremainonastudent’sofficialtranscripts.RetakingacoursewillNOTreplacetheoriginalgrade.Studentswhoenrollinanycoursemorethantwicewillbechargedahigherpremium.

DuplicateCoursesDuplicatecoursesarecoursesthatteachthesamefundamentalmaterial/contentandmaynotbecombinedforcredit.Studentsareresponsibleforreadingthecoursedescription,pre‐requisites,andundergraduatecatalogbeforeenrollingincourses.Althoughthecourseshavedifferentnumbers,theyteachsimilarcontentandcreditwillonlybeawardedforone.Thecatalogwillclearlystate,“creditmaynotbereceivedforboth”Departmentsthatoftenhavesimilarcourserestrictionsincludeforeignlanguages,BIOL,CHEM,PHYS,MATH,andP.E.B.66hrtransfercreditlimitAmaximumof66lowerlevelcredithoursmaytransfertotheUniversityofHouston.Anythingabove66hrswillNOTbecountedtowardsthe120‐hourgraduationrequirement.AnycoursestakenatacommunitycollegewillALWAYSbeconsideredlowerlevelcredits.Additionally,therearenotlimitsonthenumberofupperlevelcourses(3000/4000classes)thatmaytransferfromotheruniversities.7YearcourseruleStudentscannotsatisfyanydegreerequirementsintheirmajorwithadvancedcoursesthatwerecompletedmorethansevenyearsbeforethesemesterinwhichthedegreeisawarded.

Coursesnumbered6000orhigherarenormallylimitedtograduateandpostbaccalaureatestudents.Studentsmayrequestpermissionfromtheirdepartmentorcollegetoenrollintheseclasses.

CLASSstudentsmayusenomorethan6credithoursofSpecialProblemsand/orInternshipcoursestosatisfyanymajorrequirementsinCLASS,andnomorethan6credithourstosatisfyanyminorrequirementsinCLASS.

StudentsshallnotreceivecoursecreditbyspecialexaminationinanyfieldofstudyinCLASSiftheyhaveeverenrolledincourseworkinthatfieldofstudyattheUniversityofHoustonoranyotherac‐creditedcollegeoruniversity.

Studentswhoareonprobation(GPAbelow2.0)arenotallowedtoenrollinmorethan12hoursduringthefall/springtermand6hoursinsummer.

RepeatedCoursesmaynotapplytowardsthehoursrequiredforthedegree.

THEDEPTOFPSYCHOLOGY

Admissionand/orChangetoPSYCMajorAllnewstudentswhowishtomajorinpsychology,andallcurrentstudentswhowishtoswitchtotheDepartmentof Psychologywill need tomeetwith an advisor in theAcademicAffairsOffice of theDepartmentofPsychologytoreviewtheprogramrequirementsandeligibility.Anyincomingfreshman,collegetransferstudent, internationalstudent,orcurrentUHstudentwithanoverallGPAof2.0interestedinmajoringinpsychologymayapplyasapsychologypre‐major(akaPre‐PSYC)untilpre‐requisitesforthemajorsarecomplete.StudentswhosubmitpetitionstodeclareaPSYCmajorwithoutmeetingtheGPAorPSYCpre‐requisiteswillnotbeapproved.DegreeRequirementsTheundergraduatedegreeinPsychologyisatotalof120hours. 33ofthosehoursarePsychologycoursesrequiredforthemajor.Those33hoursarebrokendownasfollows:

MinorRequirementThedepartmentrequiresallstudentsmajoringinPsychologytocompleteaminor,adoublemajor,oraSeniorHonor’sThesis.Studentswhocompleteadoublemajororadoubledegreearenotrequiredtohaveaminor.Aminorisasecondaryareaofinterestthatusuallycomplimentsthemajorand/orcareergoal.Theaverageminorrequires18hours,however,everyminorisdifferent.Detailsabouttheminorrequirementsmaybeviewedonline.Note: Studentsmaynot double count anypsychologymajor courses in theminor (i.e., PSYC2344cannotconcurrentlysatisfy3hoursofaPSYCelective,aswellas3hrsofaminorelective)SeniorCapstoneCapstoneexperiencesareintendedasintegrative,intensiveexercisesincriticalthinkingandanalysisofcontent.Theseareopportunitiesforstudent‐focusedinitiative,creativityandproductivityundertheclosementorshipofDepartmentofPsychologyfaculty.
