What if you do relatively poorly on a piece of coursework…don’t

panic!• The impact on the final degree classification of a 55% vs.

65% mark for a piece of coursework is minimal…

• Consider an option course with coursework contributing 50% to the overall course mark

Equality and Diversity in our Department• Making the Department and the College more equal and diverse is a

part of our ethos (the college has won a number of awards for both gender and race equality)

• Athena Scientific Women's Academic Network (Athena SWAN): Promotes the advancement of gender equality in academia (staff and students) addressing unequal gender representation and removing the obstacles faced by women in particular.

• Process: identify inequalities, set out evidence-based plans to tackle them, show how plans have reduced inequalities. We are one of few Psychology Departments to hold an Athena Swan Silver Award for doing this (link to full details is on the Departments home page)

• What can YOU do? (i) Student representation on our Athena SWAN team; (ii) Tell us where the inequalities are, and help us to fix them (participate in our anonymous student equality survey, join our focus groups, and tell us your views)

• We want to hear from everyone: The views of both women and men on our degree programmes are important

• “All-Round” Psychology: choose 6 out of all half-unit options in psychology: at least one from each block, and no more than three from any block

• “Streams” Choose 6 from the relevant stream

• UPDATE: Streams CAN choose a Dissertation

• 1 or 2 of the above options may be replaced by relevant course(s) outside of psychology with a maximum weight of 1.0

• You MUST take courses with an overall weight of 3.0

Dissertations

DissertationsA substantial piece of original written work: Identify a research question that has not been comprehensively

covered in the degree programme

Construct a literature review that addresses the research question

Takes the form of an in-depth, advanced level extended essay

The Dissertation is not an empirical piece of work

Supervision meetings

Dissertation students meet with the supervisor four times to discuss:

– a suitable topic area– the suitability of the dissertation question– the reference material to be included– the 1600-word outline of the dissertation structure

Meetings are arranged on an individual basis by the student and the supervisor.
