DIRECTOR ’S NOTE

DR A M ATURGY NOTE

Welcome to Barrio Grrrrl! A Musical. I am so happy you could all join us. I want

to share a few things with you about why I love Barrio Grrrl and her friends and

family so much! For Barrio Grrrl (aka Ana Ortiz) it’s the summer after her 2nd

grade year (she turns 9 during the play), and she is on her own with her friends. Her

mom works for the U.S. Army and is away serving active duty, so her Abuelo is the

one taking care of her. But he has to work every day, too. Ana is home alone a lot.

But does she mope? Does she pout? Does she sit around all day watching

T.V.? No! Ana creates an imaginary friend, the Amazing Voice. With her help she

becomes (drumroll, please!) Barrio Grrrl and inspires all her friends: Sandip, Odette

& Oscar—to use their own imaginations and sense of possibility to bring fun

and ICE CREAM to their summer in the barrio. There’s a song in this play called

“Something Out of Nothing.” To me: that’s the key to the whole story. Peace out.

Zap! Bam! Pow! Being a super hero can be a blast. As her alter ego Barrio Grrrl, Ana

Ortiz saves her friends and family from boredom and injustice in her North Philly

barrio, all while having a ton of fun!

However, Ana discovers that super powers also come with super responsibilities

like believing in yourself, making sacrifices, and empowering others. Ana also

learns that being super doesn’t mean being perfect. Even heroes make mistakes. It is

the ability to learn from your mistakes and to ask for help that truly makes you super.

Nobody’s life is perfect, and everyone goes through difficult times. But using her

super powers of positivity and perseverance, Barrio Grrrl reminds us that “Hope

is Not a Nope,” and with a little imagination, we can make “Something Out of

Nothing” and turn even the toughest of situations into something super!

We’re very excited to have you join Ana Ortiz a.k.a. Barrio Grrrl for her most

amazing and important adventure yet.

Sonaz Izadi (Ana) 3rd year BFA/Acting. Sonaz is from Irvine, California. Her previous Theatre School credits include Lena in A Mouthful of Birds, Dani in DNA, Deanie in Splendor in the Grass, Helena in Faustus, and Ensemble in Venus.

Dan Johnson (Oscar), 4th year BFA/Actor. Dan is from Independence, Missouri. Dan’s most recent Theatre School credits include Alceste in The Misanthrope, Mephistopheles in Faustus, Eddie in Fool for Love, and Luke Monster in The Monster Under the Bed.

Gregory Marlow (Abuelo/Professor/King Harald V), 2nd year MFA/Acting. Favorite theatres performed in: The Gershwin Theatre (NY), Cherry Lane Theatre (NY), Hudson Stage Company (NY), American Theatre Company (IL), NYSAF, NYMF, NYW, Negro Ensemble Company (NY), Papermill Playhouse (NJ), Cape Rep Theatre (MA), Barnstormers Theatre (NH), and Mason Street Warehouse (MI). Film: Far from Heaven (Reginald Carter), HBO’s Addiction. Gregory toured with The 40th Anniversary Euporean and Italian Tour of Hair.

Matthew Sherrill (Sandip), 3rd year BFA/Actor. Matthew is from Monterey, California. Previous Theatre School credits include Mouthful of Birds, Blue Room, Marriage, Puto, and most recently Venus. He was also a cast member in DePaul’s Milewalkers 2011.

Kelly Erin Sloan (The Amazing Voice), 4th year BFA/Acting. Kelly is from Southfield, Michigan. Her past Theatre School credits include Story Theatre, Cecily in The Importance of Being Earnest, Aunt Esther in Gem of the Ocean, Frenchie in Cabaret, Ensemble in Objects Lie on a Table, Mayme in Intimate Apparel, and the title characters in Pinkalicious and Venus.

Lisandra Tena (Mom/Waiter/Salesperson), is a 4th Year BFA Acting Major. Lisandra is from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Her New Mexico credits include: A Light in My Soul (in collaboration with Leigh Fondakowski/Tectonic Theater Project), Andarse Por Las Ramas, A Hole in the Wall, and Yemaya’s Belly. Her Theatre School credits include: Venus, Puto, Doubt, Hedda Gabler, Bacchae, Antigone, Lips Together-Teeth Apart, Story Theatre, and Bud, Not Buddy.

Kelsey Ann Wacker (Odette), 3rd year BFA/Actor. Kelsey is from Sarasota, Florida. She attended Idyllwild Arts Academy and Marymount Manhattan College before coming to DePaul. She has previously been seen in Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, and as Mrs. Gottlieb in Dead Man’s Cell Phone.

Quaria Algerîa Hudes (Playwright) was born and raised in West Philadelphia and now lives in New York. Her plays, including Yemaya’s Belly (Portland Stage Company), Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue (Page 73 Productions), and The Adventures Of Barrio Grrrl! (Miracle Theatre), have been produced at theaters nationwide and will soon be published by Dramatists Play Service. Her musical In The Heights opens on Broadway in March 2008, following a 2007 off-Broadway run, with a book by Hudes and music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. She is also a composer and earned a B.A. in Music Composition from Yale, then an M.F.A. in Playwriting from Brown.

Bill Sherman (Music) earned a Drama Desk nomination for In the Heights Off-Broadway. He was also the composer for the second season of MTV’s “Gamekillers.” Arranger: A Night for Comden and Green; Lover, Liar, Lady. Music preparation: Captain Louie; Bare: A Pop Opera; Zanna, Don’t! Bill is a proud member of NY’s premier hip-hop, improv and comedy group, Freestyle Love Supreme, that traveled to the Aspen, Edinburgh, Melbourne and Montreal comedy festivals.

Lisa Portes (Director) serves as the Head of Directing and the Artistic Director of Chicago Playworks for Young Audience for The Theatre School. Chicago Playworks credits include Pinkalicious by Elizabeth and Victoria Kann, Cinderella Eats Rice and Beans by Karen Zacarías and Debbie Wicks La Puma and The Highest Heaven by José Cruz González. Other recent projects include The Piano Teacher by Julia Cho (Next Theatre), the world premieres of Ghostwritten (Goodman Theatre) and After A Hundred Years (Guthrie Theatre) both by Naomi Iizuka, Ski Dubai by Laura Jacqmin and Spare Change by Mia McCullough (First Look Repertory of New Plays, Steppenwolf Theatre) Elliot, A Soldier’s Fugue by Quiara Hudes (Teatro Vista and Rivendell Theatre at Steppenwolf ), El Grito del Bronx by

Migdalia Cruz (Latino Theatre Festival, Goodman Theatre) Permanent Collection by Thomas Gibbons (Northlight Theatre), Far Away by Caryl Churchill and In the Blood by Suzan-Lori Parks (Next Theatre), Offspring of the Cold War by Carlos Murillo (Walkabout Theatre) and Wilder by Erin Cressida Wilson, Jack Herrick and Mike Craver (Playwrights Horizons, NYC). Her work has been seen regionally at the Kennedy Center, South Coast Repertory Theatre’s Hispanic Playwrights Project, McCarter Theatre Lab, A Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Ford’s Theatre in Washington, D.C., the Cape Cod Theatre Project, the Sundance Theatre Lab, the Santa Barbara Theatre Lab, and the Eugene O’Neill Playwrights Conference; in New York her work has been seen at Playwrights Horizons, Soho Rep, New York Theatre Workshop, the Public Theatre, the Flea Theatre and the Cherry Lane Alternative Theatre. For The Theatre School, Lisa has directed Electricidad by Luis Alfaro, Hamlet, Cloud Nine by Carol Churchill, Three Sisters and Polaroid Stories by Naomi Iizuka. Lisa is a proud Bridgeport resident where she lives with her husband, playwright Carlos Murillo and their two children Eva Rose and Carlos Alejandro.

Mark Elliott (Musical Director) has taught Musical Theatre Performance at The Theatre School, DePaul University in Chicago for over twenty years. Recent productions at The Theatre School include Cabaret, Urinetown, The Last Five Years, A New Brain, and Assassins. He has provided musical direction for over one hundred fifty productions for theatres such as the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Candlelight Dinner Playhouse, Roosevelt University, Fox Theatricals, Loyola University, Theatre at the Center, Centerlight Theatre, and Appletree Theatre, among many others. He has served as musical director for the annual Joseph Jefferson Awards and Joseph Jefferson Citations on several occasions and was nominated for a Jeff for The Robber Bridegroom for Griffin Theatre. He has composed original scores and incidental music for nearly seventy productions, including the Off-Broadway production of Sophie, Totie and Belle and Fair City, commissioned by Roosevelt University. A series of harp pieces, Rhyme

or Treason, is published by Lyon & Healy and his lyrics for the play Soul Sisters are published in Shared Stages:10 American Dramas of Blacks and Jews, published by SUNY Press.

Caitlin Body (Assistant Director), 3rd year BFA/Theatre Arts. Caitlin hails from Osceola, Iowa. She has worked at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines in an educational capacity.

Devon Mary Doherty (Dramaturg), 4th year BFA/Theatre Arts. Devon hails from Toronto, Canada. Previous Theatre School credits include serving as dramaturg for Morgan Madison’s lab Fairytales Not Suitable for Children, performing in Ernie Nolan’s production of The Witches (Witch Ensemble), assistant directing for Reshmi Hazra on Venus, Normal and Blood Wedding, and directing Silence as part of the 2011 10-minute Play Festival. This spring, Devon will be directing Leave the Balcony Open as part of the Theatre Arts Lab Series.

Tiffany Wilson (Assistant Dramaturg), 4th year BFA Dramaturgy/Criticism major. She was dramaturg for Intimate Apparel, Much Ado about Nothing, The Monster Under the Bed, and Inky at The Theatre School. Tiffany currently teaches healthy decision-making workshops with Peer Health Exchange, and served as an assistant teacher at Gary Comer College Prep and Libby Elementary School.

Eva Breneman (Vocal Coach) teaches Voice and Dialects to the BFA3’s at DePaul. Previous Theatre School projects: Monster in a Box. Arthur Soria (Choreographer)

Rachel Watson (Scenic Designer), 3rd year BFA/Scenic Design. Rachel is from a military family. She has assisted on The Secret Garden, Medea, and A Lie of the Mind and designed A View from the Bridge.

Anders Wahl (Technical Director),3rd year BFA/Theatre Technology. Anders from Rochester, New York. Recent Theatre School credits include: The Secret Garden (Master Carpenter), Much Ado About Nothing (Props Artisan), and Mayday Mayday Tuesday (Master Carpenter).

Constance Michelle Lee (Costume Designer), 4th year BFA/Costume Design. Theatre School credits include: Blood Pudding, and The Ernie Play. Lee firmly believes in rooted collaboration in performance art and has collaborated with ETA Theater Company, Links Hall, Chicago Dramatist, Chicago Dance Makers Forum/ Erica Mott Inc., Operamatic, and The Theatrical Jazz Aesthetic. Constance’s aesthetic is an exploration of the body as sculpture/ body architectural storytelling and intricate manipulation of layered fibers.

Jared Gooding (Lighting Designer) 4th year BFA/Lighting Design. A native of Houston, Texas, Jared’s design credits include the world premiere of The Ernie Play, stagings of Sadako and the Thousand Cranes, A Brown Tale, and In the City of Jungles.

Patrick Stewart (Master Electrician), 4th Year BFA/Lighting Design. Patrick is currently working his 6th Season with Six Flags Theme Parks (2nd Season at Great America, Entertainment Show Support) where he will be continuing his career in Theme Park Entertainment. Past Theatre School credits include Lighting Designer for Nancy Drew, Faustus and Loose Knit, Assistant Lighting Designer for Alice in Wonderland, and Master Electrician for A

Garvin Jellison (Rep Master Electrician), 3rd year BFA/Lighting Design. Garvin is originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota. At The Theatre School, Garvin has worked on 1001, Original Recipe, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, The Bacchae, The Underpants, Pinkalicious, Hedda Gabler, The Witches and The Misanthrope. Garvin works as a freelance lighting designer for theatre and dance productions.

Jeff Gary (Sound Designer) 4th year BFA/Sound Design. Recent professional designs include: The Oxford Roof Climber’s Rebellion (Caffeine Theatre), La Cage aux Folles (Oregon Shakespeare Festival Daedalus Project), Local Produce 2 (Ashland Contemporary Theatre). Olivia Wallace (Stage Manager) 3rd Year BFA/Stage Management. Olivia Wallace is a Chicago native. Her favorite Theatre School credits include The Pillowman (ASM), Thieves Like Us (ASM), Pygmalion (SM), Cabaret (ASM) and Mayday Mayday Tuesday (ASM). Professional credits include Shining City at Redtwist Theatre and Salome at The National Pasttime Theatre as part of their Naked July Festival.

EMERGENCY EXITSPlease note the location of emergency exits in the theatre.

NO CELLULAR PHONES, TEXT MESSAGING, RECORDING DEVICES, PHOTOGRAPHY, PAGERS, FOOD AND BEVERAGESPlease do not use the above listed items in the theatre. Patrons with electronic pagers or cellular telephones are asked to either turn off their equipment in the theatre or check them with the House Manager prior to curtain. We discourage text messaging during the performance. The light from the screen can bother other patrons. We allow photographs to be taken before and after but never during the performance. You may also check cameras and recording equipment with the House Manager who will secure them until final curtain. As a special favor, we ask that young people do not chew gum. Water fountains are located in the lower lobby and in the lobbies of the mezzanine and balcony.

RESTROOMSRestrooms are located in the lower lobby, the mezzanine, and balcony. An accessible restroom is located on the main floor inside of the theatre.

LOST AND FOUNDIf you find an item or have lost an item, please contact the House Manager. You may also call (773) 325-7968 the next day to determine if an item has been found.

EMERGENCY TELEPHONE CALLSPatrons with electronic pagers are requested to either turn off their pagers in the theatre or check them with the House Manager prior to showtime. Should you need to give an emergency telephone number where you can be reached during a performance, please alert the House Manager of your seat location and give the Box Office telephone number for emergencies, (312) 922-1999. After Box Office hours, use (773) 325-7968 as an emergency number.

PARKING ARRANGEMENTSWe have arrangements with two parking lots: Multi-Park, 635 S. Wabash at Balbo, and LAZ Parking, One East 8th Street at State. Please ask the Box Office for details about rates and payment.

SENNHEISER INFRA-RED LISTENING SYSTEM FOR OUR HEARING-IMPAIRED PATRONSWe require the security deposit of a driver’s license or other identification during the performance. The I.D. will be returned when you return the headset.

Chicago Playworks for Families and Young Audiences

Chicago Playworks offers a live theatre experience to students, teachers and parents in the Chicago metropolitan area. It is our mission to provide theatre for children that reflects their experiences in a contemporary, multi-ethnic, urban environment.

Founded as the Goodman Children’s Theatre in 1925, Chicago Playworks is the city’s oldest continuously operating children’s theatre. It has been the first theatre experience for audiences of Chicago’s young people for more than seven decades and was one of the first major theatres for children in the United States. In 1997 and again in 2003, Chicago Playworks was honored by the Illinois Theatre Association with the Children’s Theatre Division Award, for its outstanding long-term contribution to children’s theatre. In 1980, Chicago Playworks was awarded the prestigious Sara Spencer Award by the Children’s Theatre Association of America (now the American Alliance for Theatre and Education).

Chicago Playworks is a vital aspect of the training at The Theatre School at DePaul University. Students gain pre-professional experience in an extended run before a most demanding and appreciative audience. Chicago Playworks presents three unique productions to more than 35,000 young people each season and has entertained more than 1 million schoolchildren and families since 1925.

The Theatre School ShowcaseContemporary Plays and Classics

Presenting diverse and exciting productions, The Theatre School Showcase blends imagination and cultural impact with three plays, and rounds-out the season with a fourth production featuring the graduating MFA in Acting candidates. The Theatre School Showcase offers a unique opportunity to see tomorrow’s industry leaders today, by introducing the raw creativity and dedicated collaborations of artists at the beginning of their careers. Their work is powerful, imaginative, and new.

Merle Reskin Theatre

Celebrating a century of performances this season, the Merle Reskin Theatre, built as the Blackstone Theatre in 1910, was designed by Chicago architects Marshall & Fox. The stone façade and mansard roof of the Beaux-Arts style building have been modified only slightly over the years. The interior finish of French walnut and gold was designed by Plamondon & Tetze to give the appearance of a European opera house. Prior to DePaul’s purchase of the theatre in 1988, it had been home to vaudeville, the Federal Theatre Project and the touring productions of the Shubert Organization. The Theatre School brings an audience of more than 35,000 people to the theatre each season.
