Personnel:

As reported in last week's letter to the City Administrator and City Council from Chief Wade Lamirande, the background process of the top three candidates for the position of police officer with the Department has started. This week the Department's background investigators made contact with the top three candidates and/or met with them. The goal is to have a candidate recommendation from the Chief to the Council by the second Council meeting in August.

Chief Lamirande was out of the office this week on vacation.

Crimes of the week:

On Tuesday of this week at approximately 11:30 PM, Cloquet Officers and FDL Officers responded to the area of the 1500 block of Loop Drive in the City of Cloquet on the Fond du Lac Reservation for a reported assault. On scene, Officers were met by the victim of the assault who reported he had been stuck with a chain and also punched. Cloquet Area Fire District Paramedics tended to the victim's injuries and he was treated and released at the scene. Through statements of the victim and witnesses, suspects were identified and subsequently arrested a short time later. Two adult males were charged with Assault in the Second Degree and Assault in the Fifth Degree. Both suspects are being held at the Carlton County Law-Enforcement Center.

Detectives:

On Monday Cloquet Detectives and Patrol Officers worked with the Fond du Lac Police in locating a 20 year old suicidal male in the area of Big Lake Road and Brookston Road. Officers spent a considerable amount of time (approximately 3 hours) in locating this individual and used such technology as the pinging of a cell phone to ultimately locate this individual in a swamp area. The male was taken into custody by Officers and then transported to an area hospital for a psychological evaluation.

Community Service:

This week Detective Derek Randall gave a presentation to the Kiwanis Club on current drug issues. Discussed were synthetic drugs, heroin and prescription pills.

This week Cloquet Officers participated in the annual SAPPI Employee Picnic held at Veterans Park. A booth was set up with informational packets available on Teen Driving Rules and DNA Child Safety Kits, along with one of our squad cars. Below is a picture of the booth and Cpl. Hallback showing our squad car to a couple of young children.

If you have any questions about the information provided, feel free to contact me at the police department.

Respectfully Submitted,

Terry Hill Deputy Chief of Police
