Boys Netball School's Cup Finals Earlier this term the Year 8 boys netball team competed in the School's Cup Finals day at Netball Central in Homebush. The boys qualified for the finals by coming run-ner's up at the local gala day last term. The boys started the day playing 5 games in their pool. With sharp shooting from Will P, Seth S and Prajesh P, quick ball skills from mid-courters Ryan F, Nathan C, Caerwyn S, Tully U and Shreyas S and constant in-tercepts from defensive trio Campbell M, Hugh M and Zac B, the boys won every

game in their pool comfortably and proceeded to the semi-finals. In the semi-finals, the boys came across a tough Riverside team, but played with patience, skill and teamwork to come away with an 11-4 win, booking themselves a place in the grand-final. This is where the boys came across a strong Hills Grammar side. Despite Zac B jumping out of his skin in GK against a much taller Hill's shooter, ultimately combating Hill's height at either end of the court was a challenge and the boys went down 10-15. The boys are to be congratulated for their teamwork, sportsmanship and commitment to training and games. I look forward to working with the boys again next year. Miss Margalit

Teachers vs Year 12 Students netball

As the tradition goes, as Year 12 come to the end of their time at St Ives, there is always a showdown in a very competitive game of lunchtime netball on the quad. Ms Fong was unbeatable in defence and transition against a feisty Josie G and Ms Margarlit created many opportunities for our 6ft 8 goal shooter, Mr Meatcham’s successful goals. Mr Leggatt, at centre position, effectively distributed the ball as Hannah M was gallant in her attempts to seize the ball. Score: Teachers 16; Students 4! Great win!

Steptember – Making every step count! This month a number of teams from SIHS signed up to Steptember to support an SRC initiative to raise money to-wards helping kids and adults with cerebral palsy. We are all getting more active and walking at least 10 000 steps per day, and I must say that I’ve been finding this a challenge! However, the competition between staff has been spurring us on to make the target each day. Please dig deep and lend a hand by sponsoring SIHS in our effort to raise funds for cerebral palsy. Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program – Year 9 Canberra trip Students from our school have recently undertaken, an education tour of the National Capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the Na-tional Capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion. Naplan Results Naplan results should be arriving at the school next week and will then be distributed to Year 7 and Year 9 students. Congratulations to… Perfect score in all Five Rounds of the Australiasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad Congratulations to Edward K (Year 7) for completing every round with a perfect score in the APSMO. Also, well done to Bohua H (Year 8) for correctly solving 21 out of 25 problems. Well done to all the Year 7 and 8 students who participated. Every problem was challenging. More information about overall national statistics will be available at a later date.

ST IVES HIGH SCHOOL NSWCHS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL SEPTEMBER, 2019.

Seven students from St Ives High travelled to Sydney Athletics Centre, Homebush on the 4-6

th September to compete in

the NSWCHS athletics carnival. Congratulations to the following students who represented St Ives High school in the Sydney North athletics team and have worked extremely hard on their respective disciplines to achieve outstand-ing results. On Wednesday 4

th September Kirsty F ran in the 16 years girls 800m race, achieving an amazing

result of 4th in the preliminary race with a time of 2:27.53, qualifying for the final. She then compet-

ed on Thursday 5th September in the finals and came a wonderful 5

th place, with a time of 2:27.1,

just missing qualifying times for the next level of competition by ½ a second. In the 1500m race Kirsty finished 8

th with a time of 05:12.3.

Sean C, Year 7, participated in the 12 years boy’s discus and came 7

th in the event with a fantastic

throw of 26.43m.

Ryan F, Year 8 ran in the boys 12-14 1500m and ran 9th with a time of 04:41.2. This was a per-

sonal best time of six seconds for Ryan. On Friday 6

th September Sebastian D, Adam K, Zander J and Seth S competed in the boys 15

years 4x100m relay event. The boys ran a sublime race and qualified for the finals with the 2nd

fastest time. Again, a superb effort and lots of hard work paid dividends with the boys, who won a bronze medal in the finals with a time of 46.77. The boys time was just 0.18 of a second be-hind James Ruse Agricultural College for second place. Sebastian nearly caught the second placed team on the final leg of the relay. Needless to say, the four students were ecstatic with their result, as shown in the photos. Once again, a huge vote of congratulations to all of our competitors. You have done yourselves, the school and your families proud with a fantastic result and amazing effort and hard work.

Thanks to the parents for their support on the day. It was wonderful to be able to watch the student ’s events live streamed from the DET Sport Unit website. Mrs. Sandy Terrey Sport Organiser 2019

ART GALLERY OF NSW KIDS DRAWING PRIZE 2019

For this year’s Kids’ Drawing Prize, the theme is Summertime. What do you like most about

summer? Create a picture to describe your favourite summer place. Be as detailed and de-

scriptive as you can. Is your landscape peaceful and serene like the bush, or loud and busy

like the beach. It might be a corner of your backyard, a view through a window, or the wide-

open spaces beyond. Capture summer fun picnicking in the park, playing with a pet, or your memories of a recent

holiday. What is your favourite scene of summer?

There are four age categories: 5-6 years, 7-8 years, 9-12 years, and 13-16 years.

The Art Gallery Society will appoint a panel of judges, selecting one winner in each age category based on merit.

Winners and finalists receive a Faber-Castell prize pack and their works will be displayed in the Members Lounge.

All participants in the competition receive a certificate of merit.

Winners will be announced at a special event at 10am on Sunday 24 November 2019 at the Art Gallery of NSW .

See Mrs Gettens if you are interested or would like any advice. You can also find more info on the AGNSW website

CAREERS UPDATES Year 10 Work Experience Reminder With the holidays fast approaching it will be a good opportunity to source a work experience employer and have the work experience forms signed. Work experience is held during Term 4 Week 8 from 2-6 December 2019 and is compulsory for all Year 10. There are no classes that week as this week has been set aside so students can experience the world of work, test a possible future career or gain some important skills, which may lead to a casual job. Signed forms are due back to me on or before 15 November so that I have time to enter the details into the database and allocate teachers to supervise students during the week. Students are welcome to look over my list of work experience contacts from previous years.
