Derby City School Sport Partnership

Primary Competitions 2013-14

www.derbycityssp.co.uk

This booklet provides information on all of the primary-aged competitions, festivals and events planned by Derby City SSP for 2013 – 2014. The information is provided alphabetically based upon the name of the sport, starting with athletics and finishing with volleyball. For each sport we have provided basic information on the opportunities during the year, including a brief summary of the rules. This information is correct at the time of printing but please check our website for full information, as this will be updated throughout the year should anything change. School Games and Commonwealth Games Many of the competitions form part of the School Games and contribute towards the Derbyshire School Games Championships. Where available, information is provided on county finals leading from a local competition. With the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games at the end of the academic year we have put together a ‘Commonwealth Games School Championship’, which runs through the year. This includes sports that will form part of the Commonwealth Games and will culminate in a special one-off event in the summer.

“Hello, I’m Clyde! Look out for me on sports that count towards the SSP Commonwealth Games School Championships!”

Any player persistently fouling may be removed from the game by the referee. In the event of a foul the opposing team will receive the ball on the nearest side/end line. If the player is fouled in the act of shooting one/two free throws are awarded; one if the basket is scored and two if the shot is missed. Each free throw is worth one point. In the event of a tie a free throw ‘shootout’ will decide the result of the game. Scoring: baskets scored from outside the arc (if available) = 3 points, baskets scored from inside the arc = 2 points. When a team scores, the other team gain possession of the ball on the end line or outside the arc if playing half court. Size of Team/Squad Maximum of 30 children per group

Basic Overview Subject to confirmation of dates from Derby County FC, the Play on the Pitch event(s) will be multi-sport or sport specific events dependant on the age group and day your group is attending. The event(s) give children the opportunity to play on the hallowed turf at Pride Park Stadium, home of the Rams! Some important things to consider… A teacher from each school must accompany each of their groups around the activities. This is for supervision purposes and because toilet breaks are to be taken as and when needed by the children rather than a specific break time being built into the day. There will be a member of SSP / Derby County staff and / or Young Leaders at each station to explain, demonstrate and oversee the activities. We also endeavour to have a Young Leader to assist teachers by accompanying each group as they go round the activities. Schools are responsible for ensuring pupils have sufficient refreshments with them on the day. An official photographer will be in attendance, so schools must ensure that they inform the SSP staff at registration of any issues regarding consent for photos of any children to be taken and used in media and promotional materials including web-based outlets such as the SSP website and Twitter / Facebook feeds. School staff are only permitted to take photos of children from their OWN school. Spectators are to be seated in the South (Main) Stand which is indicated on the Pitch Layout document and ARE NOT permitted to take ANY PHOTOS!

Basic Overview The very basic rules are: One team bats while the other team fields and bowls. The bowler bowls the ball to the batter who hits the ball anywhere on the

Rounders pitch. The batter then runs to as many posts as possible before the fielders return the ball to touch the post the batter is heading for.

If the batter reaches the 2nd or 3rd post in one hit, the batting team scores ½ Rounder. If the batter reaches 4th post in one hit, the batting team scores a Rounder.

A batter can be out if the fielding team catch the ball hit by the batter before it touches the ground or by touching the post the batter is heading to with the ball before the batter reaches it.
