Foreword

These lesson sheets are not a 'teach yourself' series. They are designed for music teachers to work

through with their students during lessons and to provide concise, simple notes to serve as a

reminder for the student of what was covered and needs to be practised for the next lesson. The

author wrote these lesson sheets as he found many tutors contained too much explanatory text,

failing to highlight clearly the main points to be practised and remembered for the next lesson and

appearing more daunting for the student to face, even if the pace of the tutor was very slow.

As well as having notes to play, sometimes we need silence in the music, where no notes are played. A rest tells us not to play.

Sometimes we don't have a full bar for the first bar. The notes are taken from the first bar andput at the end of the piece, so the first and last bar add up to the correct number of beats in the bar. This is called an anacrusis.

There are lots of different types of cymbals; crash cymbals, ride cymbals (also called suspended cymbals), marching cymbals, hit-hat and more!

Rock Beat

A drum kit can have lots of different types of drums and cymbals. Often there is a special pair of cymbals on a stand called a 'hi-hat'. 'Swing beat' uses the hi hat.

When playing the drum kit, you get to play the bass drum, snare drum and cymbals at once!

Lesson 14Tuned Percussion / Keyboard

Notes on a keyboard or xylophone are named by letters from the alphabet.

Only the first letters of the alphabet are used (from A to G), so the next note above G is A andthe note below A is G.

You can tell what note you are playing by looking at the black notes (or upper notes on axylophone). Have a look at C. All the Cs on the keyboard are just to the left of 2 black notes.

The C in the middle of the keyboard is given a special name. Can you guess what? Middle C !

You also need to know which finger to use. Each finger is given a number. The thumb on eachhand is number 1 and little finger number 5.
