    I. ASSEMBLY OF ROTOR

    A. To Assemble the Rotor

    (See Figure 1)

    A more complete description of what is required is contained in the table of contents for thecomposite book for the set.

    1. Assemble to stator the fan inlet baffles, both ends.

    2. Assemble brackets (15) to stator (both ends).

    a. Place lower-half end shield (both ends) into brackets (15)

    b. Secure with bolts (12) and spacers (11) (if required) to prevent tipping.

    3. Assemble protective shim (5) in the air gap. Coat the top of steel air-gap shim (4) with paraffin

    or hard wax and assemble in the air gap.

    4. Secure the steel air-gap shim (4) to the stator frame to prevent it from slipping. Note that thereare 2 holes in each end. Use 3/8" (9.525 mm) diameter rope minimum to secure item 4.

    B. To move the Rotor into the Stator

    A more complete description of what is required is contained in the Table of Contents for the

    composite book for the set.

    1. Electrical check of flux probe should be performed prior to inserting rotor.

    2. Assemble the coupling or bearing shoe (9) and secure it to the shaft to prevent it from slipping.

    Assemble the rigging for pulling the rotor through the stator.

    3. Take a hitch around the rotor at (Y), using a fiber shim (2) to protect the rotor surface.

    Aluminum covers should be used to protect the fiber shims, if steel cable is used for lifting.Move the rotor into the stator to position (B), or as far as possible. Take care not to damage the

    punchings or the stator end winding insulation. Protect the finished surface of the stator with a

    block of wood at (V).

    4. Reset the rotor on the coupling shoe (9) and block the collector end of the rotor at (Z). Do not

    allow any part of the rotor to touch the punchings.

    5. Change the hitch from (Y) to (X), using a copper shim (6) to avoid damaging the finished

    surface of the rotor. Remove the blocking at (Z).

    6. Pull the rotor into the stator until the rotor shoe (3) can be inserted past the stepped punchings.Do not allow the rotor weight to fall on the stepped punchings.

    7. Raise the collector end of the rotor slightly and insert the rotor shoe (3) between the rotor body

    and the air-gap shim (4). Secure the rotor shoe to the shaft to prevent it from slipping.

    8. Lower the collector end of the rotor slightly to take the rotor weight off the coupling shoe (9) and

    put it on the rotor shoe (3).

    9. Pull the rotor through the stator until the coupling is between the stator core and the fan-inletbaffle.

    10. Remove the coupling shoe (9).

    11. Pull the rotor to position (A). Do not allow the retaining rings to touch the fan-inlet baffle. If the

    turbine-end retaining ring is low enough to hit the baffle, stop the rotor just short of position (A).

    12. Assemble the shaft support (7) to the collector end. Use copper shims (6) to avoid damaging the

    finished surfaces of stator and rotor.

    13. Change the hitch from (X) to (W), using a copper shim (6) to avoid damaging the finished

    surfaces of the rotor.

    14. If the rotor was stopped short of position (A), raise the turbine end of the rotor enough for the

    retaining ring to clear the baffle and pull the rotor to position (A).

    15. Raise the turbine end of the rotor slightly and remove the rotor shoe (3). Take care not to damage

    the punchings or the stator end winding insulation.

    C. To complete the Assembly

    Refer to the Composite Book for this set for additional guidance regarding end shield assembly and

    disassembly.

    1. Remove bolts (12) and spacers (11) and assemble lower-half outer end shield (turbine end) tostator. Remove brackets (15).

    2. Assemble the shaft jacking device (14) to the turbine end endshield, using a copper shim (6) toavoid damaging the finished surface of the rotor.

    3. Assemble lower-half inner oil deflector and lower-half seal housing (turbine end). Assembly of

    lower half seal housing may be postponed until upperhalf end shield assembly (step 18) if

    required to adequately check end shield alignment (vertical face step check).

    4. Assemble lower-half liner casing and bearing (turbine end).

    5. Remove the shaft jacking device (14). Take care that no interference exists between rotor, sealhousing and oil deflector.

    6. Remove the steel air-gap shim (4) and protective shim (5) from the collector end.

    7. Remove bolts (12) and spacers (11) and assemble lower-half outer end shield (collector end) to

    stator. Remove bracket (15).

    8. Assemble the shaft jacking device (14) to the collector end, using a copper shim (6) to avoiddamaging the finished surface of the rotor.

    9. Using a crane, raise the rotor slightly and support it with the shaft jacking device (14). Remove

    the shaft support (7).

    10. Assemble lower-half inner oil deflector and lower-half seal housing (collector end). Assembly oflower half seal housing may be postponed until upperhalf end shield assembly (step 18) if

    required to adequately check end shield alignment (vertical face step check).

    11. Assemble lower-half liner casing and bearing (collector end).

    12. Remove the shaft jacking device (14). Take care that no interference exists between rotor, sealhousing and oil deflector.

    13. Couple the generator rotor to the turbine.

    14. Assemble fan blades to the rotor. Use new locking plates each time the blades are assembled.

    15. Assemble the upper-half gas shields to the stator.

    16. Assemble upper-half outer end shields to stator.

    17. Assemble bolting on the horizontal joints of the outer end shields through the hand-holeopenings provided (see Figure 2).

    18. Assemble upper-half inner oil deflectors and upper-half seal housings. Ensure that lower halfseal housings are in place (per steps 3 and 10).

    19. Assemble upper-half bearings and liner casings.

    20. Assemble outer oil deflectors and bearing caps.

    21. Assemble hand-hole covers to the outer end shields.

    22. Assemble generator brush rigging and shaft-driven exciter (if applicable). Refer to instructions

    for generator brush rigging and collector rings and for installation of direct connected exciters.

    23. Electrical check of flux probe should be performed to ensure that probe was not damaged duringassembly.

    CAUTION

    Prior to performing work on this unit the site must de-energize all electrical circuits anddepressurize all piping systems associated with this unit. The site must Lock-out/Tag-outappropriate electrical circuits and piping systems for the duration of work.

    Proper PPE must be worn by all workers at all times during this procedure.

    Workers must be aware of their surroundings and the work being performed. This

    procedure involves tight spaces and moving large objects.

    Equipment used in this procedure should be inspected prior to use. Damaged or

    deficient equipment should not be used.

    II. DISASSEMBLY OF ROTOR

    A more complete description of what is required is contained in the table of contents for the composite

    book for the set.

    A. Remove prior to Disassembling the Rotor

    1. Remove generator brush rigging and shaft-driven exciter (if applicable).

    2. Remove bearing caps and outer oil deflectors.

    3. Remove upper-half liner casings and bearings.

    4. Remove upper-half seal housings and upper-half inner oil deflectors.

    5. Remove hand-hole covers from upper-half outer end shields. Through these openings remove

    bolting from the horizontal joints of the end shields (see Figure 2).

    6. Remove upper-half outer end shields. Ensure that all horizontal joint bolts have been removed.

    7. Remove upper-half gas shields.

    8. Remove fan blades.

    9. Uncouple the generator rotor from the turbine. Use the jacking holes in the coupling flange to

    disengage the rabbet fit.

    B. To Remove the Rotor from the Stator

    1. Assemble the shaft jacking device (14) to the collector end, using a copper shim (6) to avoiddamaging the finished surface of the rotor.

    2. Using a chain fall, raise the rotor slightly and support with the shaft jacking device (14). Removethe lower-half bearing and liner casing (collector end).

    3. Remove lower-half seal housing and lower-half inner oil deflector (collector end).

    4. Assemble the shaft support (7) to the collector end. Use copper shims (6) to avoid damaging the

    finished surfaces of stator and rotor.

    5. Remove shaft jacking device (14).

    6. Assemble brackets (15) to stator (collector end). Take hitch on lower-half end shield (collector

    end) and lower into bracket (15). Secure with bolts (12) and spacers (11), if required, to preventtipping.

    7. Assemble protective shim (5) in the air gap. Coat the top of steel air-gap shim (4) with paraffinor hard wax and assemble in the air gap.

    8. Secure the steel air-gap shim (4) to the stator frame to prevent it from slipping. Note that thereare 2 holes in each end. Use 3/8" (9.525 mm) diameter rope minimum to secure item 4.

    9. Assemble the shaft jacking device (14) to the turbine end, using a copper shim (6) to avoiddamaging the finished surface of the rotor.

    10. Using an overhead crane, raise the rotor slightly and support it with the shaft jacking device (14).Remove the lower-half bearing and liner casing (turbine end).

    11. Remove lower-half seal housing and lower-half inner oil deflector (turbine end).

    12. Take a hitch around the rotor at (W), using a copper shim (6) to avoid damaging the finishedsurface of the rotor.

    13. Raise the turbine end of the rotor slightly and insert the rotor shoe (3) between the rotor body

    and the air-gap shim (4). The shoe should be inserted far enough into the air gap that it will notbe over the stepped punchings. The rotor body should rest on the shoe so that the weight of therotor will not be carried by the retaining ring.

    Do not allow the tip of the retaining ring to touch the punchings or the stator endwindings.

    14. Remove the shaft jacking device (14). Lower the turbine end of the rotor slightly to put the rotor

    weight on the rotor shoe (3).

    15. Assemble brackets (15) to stator (turbine end). Take hitch on lower-half end shield (collectorend) and lower into brackets (15). Secure with bolts (12) and spacers (11), if required, to preventtipping.

    16. Change the hitch from (W) to (X), using a copper shim (6) to avoid damaging the finishedsurface of the rotor. Remove the shaft support (7).

    17. Assemble axial pulling device (10). Wrap collector to prevent damage from cables.

    18. Assemble rigging for pulling rotor to axial pulling device (10). Take care that rigging will notdamage collector or collector fan.

    19. Pull the rotor through the stator until the coupling is between the stator core and the fan inlet

    nozzle.

    20. Assemble the coupling shoe (9) and secure it to the shaft to prevent it from slipping.

    21. Pull the rotor farther into the stator. Lower the collector end slightly to allow the coupling shoe(9) to clear the end of the air gap shim (4).

    22. After the coupling shoe has passed the first packet of punchings, raise the collector end slightly

    to take the rotor weight off the rotor shoe (3) and put it on the coupling shoe (9).

    23. Pull the rotor to position (B), stopping before the rotor shoe (3) reaches the end packet of

    punchings. Do not allow the rotor shoe to reach the stepped punchings.

    24. Raise the collector end of the rotor slightly and remove the rotor shoe (3).

    25. Pull the rotor on the coupling shoe (9) until the center of gravity of the rotor is outside the statorframe, stopping before the coupling shoe reaches the end packet of punchings. Do not allow the

    rotor shoe to reach the stepped punchings.

    26. Block the collector end of the rotor at (Z). Do not allow the retaining ring to touch the

    punchings.

    27. Change the hitch from (X) to (Y), using a fiber shim (2) to protect the rotor surface. Protect the

    finished surface of the stator with a block of wood at (V). Remove the blocking at (Z).

    28. Move the rotor clear of the stator. Take care not to allow any part of the rotor to damage thestator end winding insulation.

    29. After removal, support the rotor on blocks under the rotor body and protect the finished surfaces

    as described under Assembly of Rotor, Section I.B.2.

    CAUTION

    Hydrogen cooled generator rotor bores can retain hydrogen even after the gas exchangeprocedure. Prior to disassembly / repair of terminals or bore seals appropriate safety

    measures should be established considering this fact. Units not covered by TIL-960 willnot have pressured gas in the bore; however can still have a hydrogen mixture for some

    period of time.
