George has been recorded by a number of researchers on Ancestry.com as a son of Andrew and Elizabeth. Direct evidence has not been found in parish records and it is doubtful that Elizabeth would have a child at the age of 50.

"The first name on the Hepburn list, and the oldest known to the writer (J.T.O.H.) by hearsay. He was

in the British Army, in the Scots Grey Cavalry Regiment at the Battle of Waterloo, in 1815, and later

lived at Lanark, Scotland, where he was employed at the Lanark courthouse, possibly as

Generation 2 (con't) Sheriff, and the Lanark Police Department. Details are vague but a relative, David Hepburn, possibly a brother of John, was also known to be there. The writer's grandfather, James Hepburn of Biggar told me that his father, the above John, was born in 1781 at Galston in Ayershire, and was descended from the 4th Earl of Bothwell, but details of the immediate ancestors are missing." Research by D.E.Williams The Galston OPR reads: "John, lawful son to Andrew Hebron at Aird born on Saturday 28th July 1781 about 4 o'clock forenoon baptised 29th July" The Galston reference in grandfather Hepburn's notes were to the parish where the birth was registered not to the town of Galston. John was probably born at Aird Farm in Riccarton parish (near the Carnell Estate in Ayrshire) but the registration was done in Galston parish. John's discharge papers from the 2nd Dragoons or as they were more commonly known, the Royal Scots Greys, indicate that he served from the 2nd day of December 1803 until 13 August 1817 (ref: WO 97/63/113). He was discharged as unfit for duty due to a rupture and an injured back. The papers indicate that John had enlisted at age 22, which is consistent with the birthdate that we have. He was shown to be 5' 11" tall, had brown hair and hazel eyes. John Hepburn became an Officer of the Burgh of Lanark in 1830 and was also assigned duties as the jailer. He continued in this role until about 1836 with the exception of a brief period in 1833 when he was fired for letting a prisoner escape. It is believed that he went on to become the Chief Warden or Governor at the new Lanark Prison built in 1835. Various artefacts that belonged to John can be found in Lanark and Biggar area museums, such as a grandfather clock that was made at the prison and remained with the family for many years. Notes for Christian Doughty: OPR birth records were found for three children, Mary, Thomas Gillespie, and Andrew Balfour, that show the mother's name as Christian Doughtie. Andrew was born in Linlithgow, West Lothian, while the other two children were born at Lanark. James Hepburn's 1897 death registration spells the name Doughty. Since John and Christian married in 1809 and the regiment was stationed in Dublin, Ireland at the time, we could assume that Christian was Irish. One of the Hepburn girls is said (by JTOH) to have emigrated to New Zealand, perhaps along with brother John, while another was to marry a Mr. Storey from Greenock. It seems as if we might be short of one female child in the family.

"Born in 1811, at Lanark, was the owner of a bakery business at Biggar in the wide main street, opposite the Town Hall. Besides local trade at the Main Street shop, he had a contract for several years to supply bread to the Caledonian Railway Company's workers, who were building the railway through Southern Lanarkshire, to Biggar, Peebles and Dumfries. Later he had a contract for many years with the railway company to distribute freight to the district of Biggar and the surrounding farms, employing a trucker or two and kept horses and wagons (called lorries) for the work. He had an office in his house on the West Back Road, Biggar, with a large garden between the shop's extended bakery buildings and the dwelling house, also further west on the same property, barns, stables, steam engine room (for driving machinery) hay stacks and acreage for crops extending half a mile to the Biggar and Carnwath Road. He also rented land for growing crops, mostly oats and wheat, for his livestock, including horses, milk cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens, pigeons, cats and a dog called "Yarrow". He had sold the bakery business to a Mr. Johnstone when he started the freight contract. Grandpa was also for many years, the chief Commissioner for Biggar (which in Scotland was the equivalent of being Mayor and elected as in English towns]. He superintended, while Commissioner, the work of building a water reservoir and water pipes for a modern supply of gravitation water to each householder in the town, from the hills in the east. Previously the only water supply was from wells, some of them in the middle of the village street. He was defeated in an election for spending too much money on the new Biggar water system and for arguing too strongly with his opponents, for which he was called "Auld Hayburon", with an emphasis on the R. James Hepburn of Biggar died in 1897 and was buried at the churchyard, in front of the old Biggar Parish Church. The writer (then 22) was at the funeral, having travelled from Greenock where he was employed at the time as a draughtsman at the Caird & Company's shipyard."

Generation 3 (con't) Research by D.Williams James was actually born in Manchester, England according to the 1851 Census. This is consistent with the fact that his father's regiment, the Royal Scots Greys cavalry, had transferred to Lancashire, England from Dublin 1810. The family did end up in Lanark after his father was discharged in 1817. The regiment had just returned to Scotland in June of that year after spending time in France (Waterloo, 1815) and Coventry. "Jane Hepburn (usually called Aunt Jeanie) was born at Biggar in 1833. She married David Lockhart, who had a printers and stationers business at Biggar, when 17 years old. She was a widow for fourty years and died at Biggar in 1916. She had a cottage of six rooms built for herself about 1885 and kept a maid to help. She was a teacher in Sunday school work for many years in Biggar. Her house had a lovely view of the Biggar Water that ran down the Biggar Valley to the River tweed and of the hills beyond and where I liked to spend a holiday from the busy city of Glasgow."

"John Hepburn (grandson and 2nd generation from the veteran of Waterloo) was born at Biggar in 1838 and was trained as a baker in the Hepburn Bakery but he had to give up that work owing to illness caused by the flour dust which developed into chronic hay fever. Later he moved to Glasgow and became a partner in a wholesale dry-goods firm in the city called Scobie & Co. and travelled much around the towns of Scotland selling drapery ware for his company. He was an elder for many years in the Glasgow Cathedral of the Church of Scotland on Cathedral St. in Glasgow. He married Jane Symington of Drymore in Dumbartonshire whose father owned the hotel there and they had a family of five (four boys and one girl) all born at 18 Melville St. Pollockshields, Glasgow, a suburb on the southwest side of the city. Uncle John died in Glasgow in 1916, seven years after the writer came to Canada and his widow moved to Biggar and later to Kerse Lesmahegow where she died in 1926 in the house of her daughter, the Gilchrist's."

There are some disacrepancies in the information that J.T. Hepburn collected. According to the


1881 census Jane was born at Strathblane and her marriage certificate indicates that her father was William Symington, a gameskeeper. According to a letter to J.T. Hepburn from Sir Andrew Gilchrist, John spent his final years with his daughter and Gilchrist grandchildren at Arthur's Crag, a fruit farm near the town of Hazelbank in Lanarkshire.

James Hepburn later worked at the same trade in Lesmahagow and Glasgow. In Glasgow he was with a large company in Argyle St. named Mann, Buyers & Co. Ltd. For several years (which is still flourishing) and in a neighbouring office met a William Crawford Jr. of Lochwinnoch. He was invited to visit the Crawford family there quite a few times who were the owners of the Crawford Wool Mills of Lochwinnoch and was later engaged to be married to Jessie Crawford (sister of William Crawford Jr.) whom he married at Lochwinnoch in 1871. They lived in Biggar near the Hepburn's shop and my sister Agnes and I were born there. We went to Biggar schools until I was ten and Addie was 13, then we moved to Crosshill, Glasgow in 1885, a suburb near the lovely Queen's Park. We had a flat at 20 Dixon Avenue, off Victoria road, then moved to 10 Carrington St., at the west end of the city (off Great Western Rd.) in 1887 to be near a grain store my father had opened in St. George Rd. near St. George Cross, which was carried on until he died in 1894, when 51 years of age. Then mother and sister moved to the old Crawford house at Lochwinnoch which had been left to her on Grandma Crawford's death in 1891. William Crawford Jr., her brother had died unmarried in 1880 and Jessie had married James Hepburn at Lochwinnoch when 22 years old in 1871. After the death of her husband in Glasgow in 1894 the grain business was sold and she moved with daughter Addie to the Crawford house at Lochwinnoch and twenty-two years later, the old house of eight rooms was sold to the Lochwinnoch Gas Co. and they moved to a cottage at Johnshill which belonged to a cousin, an Orr of Kaim, (later to the Dickie family) and my mother died there in 1941. My mother's father, William Crawford, had one daughter from his first marriage, namely Mary Crawford, who married a Mr Wright of Manchester who had been a clerk in the wool mill of the Crawford's at Lochwinnoch. After the wedding they moved to Manchester when my mother was a girl and their descendants are mostly there yet. James William Hepburn, eldest son of John Hepburn of Glasgow was born at Glasgow in 181. He was educated (like the writer) at Allan Glen's Technical School, then had training in an architects office in Glasgow. Later he became Chief Architect to the London County Council in London for many years. He married Helen E. Westwood of London in 1918 and retired from his architectural work in 1945, moving to a house in the country at Shillingstone, Dorset, then later to Findon Valley in Worthing, Sussex, where he died in 1961, leaving his widow and one son James Arthur. Their second son, John Gordon Hepburn, was in the Second World War like his brother, but was killed at the bombing of London when he was on leave in 1944. James Arthur Hepburn was an officer in the British Army at the defeat of the Japanese in Burma and returned to London at the end of the war.

Jean Ann Hepburn, born in Glasgow in 1884, educated at a Glasgow school, only daughter of John Hepburn. She married James Gilchrist of Arthur's Crag, Kerse, Lanarkshire and died in 1947. Mr. Gilchrist was the owner of a large fruit farm near the river Clyde and his people had been acquainted in olden days with the Hepburn's of Biggar just as the writer had often visited and played with his cousins in Pollockshields and his little cousin Jean, the lively one, who was nine years younger than him. James and Jean Gilchrist had five of a family, two sons and three daughters, of whom the youngest Betty died in 1961.

He served a five year apprenticeship at Watson, Laidlaw & Co's engineering works in Glasgow. Then was twelve years as draughtsman and designer in mechanical engineering work (including latterly, motor car design) in various companies in Glasgow and Coventry. Was a partner for two years in Abbot Engineering Co of Paisley, which was financed by a second cousin, R.B. Dickie of Troon. Sold out share in the Abbot Eng. Co. in 1909 and emigrated to Canada. Worked about 17 years as Chief Engineer to Nanaimo & South Wellington Coal Company with a two year period for a change of occupation to fruit growing in Keating Sannich, near Victoria. Then 18 years as Designing Engineer and Chief Draughtsman for bridges and structures work with the Public Works Department of the B.C. Government at the Parliament Building, Victoria. Retired at 70 on a civil service pension in 1945 to Parksville, Vancouver Island, and later when 80 moved to Victoria, then to North Surrey B.C. in 1959, to be beside our daughter Nancy Vincent. He married, Margaret McLean Smith of Nanaimo in 1911. She had emigrated to B.C. with her family in 1910 from Shettleston, near Glasgow and was the second daughter of Neil McLean Smith who was born at Huntsfield Farm, Biggar in 1854and died in Nanaimo in 1925.

James Arthur was an architect with John Laing & Co., London, then a partner in an architectural company in London. Married Winnifred Beryl Simpson of Bramhall, Cheshire on April 15, 1950 and have a family of three James Richard, born 1951, Christopher Harry, born 1953 and Julie Ann, born 1955. They are now living at Radlett, Herts. James Arthur was an officer with the British Army in Burma in the Second World War, which drove the Japanese from Burma.

Sir Andrew Graham Gilchrist, eldest son of James and Jean (Hepburn) Gilchrist, born at Arthur's Crag in 1946. Andrew Gilchrist is now the British Consul General at Chicago and formerly the Consul in Iceland. His present appointment lasts until beginning of 1963 before any other move. He inherited the estate of Arthur's Crag at Kerse Lanarkshire, near the banks of the River Clyde on the death of his father, James Gilchrist.

Sir Andrew was knighted for his service in a wide variety of Foreign Service posts. He was also a published author. He was the only Gilchrist currently listed in the International Who's Who. He lived in Lanark, near Lesmahagow where he was born - in Hazelbank, actually. His ancestors were weavers, He had an enviable career as a British diplomat and novelist, and loved curling.

James Thomas Hepburn, born 12th March 1912, at Nanaimo, B.C., eldest son of James T.O. and Margaret Hepburn, educated at a Nanaimo school, then at Cedar District School till 1927 when the family moved to Victoria. He graduated from Victoria High School in 1929 and worked as a draughtsman for a patent agent in Victoria till 1932, when he started work as a radio technician with Island Tug and Barge Co. of Victoria till 1940. He married Molly Moyer, the secretary for the Island Tug & Barge Co., in 1941. He became a partner in the Spillsbury & Hepburn Radio Co. of Vancouver in 1941, which developed into the Queen Charlotte Air Lines in 1944. They then sold out to the Pacific Western Air Lines in 1957. James is now the manager of the Radio Telecommunications Council of B.C. and owner of rental property in apartment blocks in Vancouver and a country cottage and acreage at Matsqui which is the headquarters of his radio work. They have two of a family, James Peter Hepburn, born 1943, a college student of the U.B.C. of Vancouver and a future electrical engineer in spaceships probably. Mary Jean Hepburn, born 1946, now at high school in Vancouver and preparing for work as the future head of a modern household.

HEPBURN, Molly Beatrice (Moyer) Born December 25, 1912, Saskatchewan died February 4, 2006, in Penticton. Beloved of all her family. Survived by daughter Jean, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and another en route, brother Dick (Betty) in Victoria and many relatives and friends in Canada, England and Australia. Predeceased by a younger sister, Betty Jean, husband James and son Peter. Molly left a legacy of warm compassion for all who knew her. No service by request. Private cremation.

Married Frederic Vincent of Saskatchewan, at Parksville on July 1, 1946 after several years working during the war in an airplane factory in Vancouver and assistant nurse at the Vancouver

Generation 6 (con't) General Hospital later. Has three children who were born at Bralorne, B.C. where their father worked in the gold mines there. Douglas S. born in 1947, Margaret and Irene (twins) born in 1948. Moved to Surrey, B.C. (near New Westminster) in 1950, where the family are now at school. Frederick Vincent was born at Earl Grey, Saskatchewan in 1904 and was in the Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.

Nelson Smith Hepburn, born at Nanaimo 30th Oct. 1917. Educated at Cedar District and Victoria schools. Trained as a mechanic and wood turner in Victoria til 2nd World War. He joined the Volunteer Branch of the 9th Coastal Battery, R.C.A. in 1937 and was transferred to the Canadian Army in 1939, at the end of the war in 1945, retired as Lieutenant. Was married to Josephine Cook of Victoria on June 1st 1943. Attended Vancouver University, 1946 to 1950 and graduated as B.Sc. in Civil Engineering and was appointed a member of the Professional Engineers Association of B.C. in 1953. He was a draughtsman with the Highway Department in the Parliament Buildings, Victoria, 1952-1956 and a partner in A.B. Sanderson Co. Consulting Engineers for bridges and structural work from 1957 to date.

They have three of a family, Roberta L. Hepburn, born 1941 now a college student at U.B.C. and in the summer, an expert caterer at the Banff Springs Hotel, Malcolm Bruce Hepburn, born 1945, a future worker in protons, deuterons and radio active isotopes ! and Catherine Anne Hepburn, born 1956 and just started school in Vancouver, the youngest and liveliest of her generation and has more electrical energy than her namesake in the theatrical line.

HEPBURN, Josephine Lois Born on September 25, 1918 in Victoria, B.C., passed away on December 23 with family at her side. Josephine attended school in Victoria, finishing her studies at St. Ann's Academy Secretarial School. She then worked in the office of David Spencer's Ltd. before her marriage to Nelson Smith Hepburn also of Victoria. Jo and Nelson and expanding family moved several times between Victoria and Vancouver in pursuit of Nelson's education and career as a Professional Engineer. Each move saw a few more finds from a new antique store and all her favourite flowers planted in the garden. Finally they settled on SW Marine Drive in Vancouver with a lovely large garden where she could plant vines and shrubs and trees and watch them mature. At this time Van Dusen Botanical Gardens was just starting, Josephine was one of the first volunteers in the guiding program and became a mentor to many over the years. She was also an active member of Engineers Wives in both Victoria and in Vancouver. In 1982, Jo and Nelson retired to Denman Island and a very large garden which she tamed and expanded. She also became actively involved in the Island's gardening community, sharing her knowledge for the next 20 years. In 2002


Jo and Nelson returned to Vancouver to a garden apartment at Shannon Oaks where she remained, fiercely independent, until just a few weeks ago. Josephine was predeceased by her parents Howard Hull Cook and Mary Lois Campbell, brother Gregory and husband Nelson in 2005. She is survived by daughters Roberta (Robbi) Macfarlane, Catherine (Cassie) Hepburn and son Bruce, son-in-law Robin Macfarlane; grandchildren Christian Macfarlane (Joely), Brett Macfarlane (Lynanne), Jessika Hepburn, Sophie and Stirling Hepburn; and great-granddaughters Ila Elizabeth (pictured with her great-Nana), Sela Dae and Gabrielle Ruby. In lieu of flowers, donations to Van Dusen Botanical Gardens volunteer programs are appreciated. At Josephine's request there will be a private family gathering in the spring "at the top of the hill, at the end of the road" where Josephine and Nelson's journey first began.
