James George and Locky Charlotte Frazer
INTRODUCTION
Our forefathers came to this great land to seek and explore life. They have left footprints on the sands of time by which others may find the way to the future through the past.
James George Frazer and Descendants 1971
James George Frazer, Baptist minister, was born in Campbell County, Virginia on 17 September 1799. He was one of 21 chi ldren. His parents were Wil l iam T. Frazer and Susanna (Grimes) Frazer. James George Frazer served in the State MUitia f rom Campbell County, Virginia in 1824-1825.
James George Frazer married Locky Charlotte Boatwright on 31 August 1821 in Campbell County. Virginia- Locky was the youngest daughter of James and Sally (Thomas) Boatwright. The fol lowing three children were born in Campbell Co., Va.
I. Hierson Adam Frazer - born 10 June 1823. I I . Easter Ann Frazer -born 10 July 1825. I I I . Locky Ann Frazer - born 1 March 1827.
In the fall of 1832. James G. Frazer and his fami ly joined a wagon train going to Ohio. Locky and the girls rode in the wagon. Hierson walked and drove the family sheep. For many years there was a natural colored wool blanket, hand made and edge stitched in red in the Frazer fami ly . It was made f rom the wool of these sheep.
The family arrived at Greenfield, Highland County, Ohio in October. The day after their arrival they were surprised by a deep snow. Hierson froze his feet and might have lost them but for the kindness of a neighbor who acted as a doctor. This family was not prepared for the severe winter in Ohio , but fortunately they found a house and stayed unt i l spring. This house was haunted, and the family has many stories to tell
.

about the experience. In the spring they returned to Virginia.
In 1834 they again joined a wagon t ra in , this t ime heading for Texas. They got as far as Indiana. An epidemic of what they called "Swamp Fever", hit their wagon train and one half of them died. "Swamp Fever" is a form of meningitis, caused by the bite of a mosquito. Hierson Frazer got the fever. His mother, Locky , knew a lo t about herbs, so she waded the swamps, gathered the herbs, and made medicine for her son. He was one of the few to recover.
The day they were to go on to Texas the wagon master died as a result of being kicked in the head by a mule. No one else could lead the way. The Frazers had Boatwright relatives back in Highland Co., Ohio, so they made their way back to Ohio. They d idn ' t l ike the swampy area around Greenfield, so they moved southward and bought land in Jackson Township, bui l t their log cabin, and settled down to raise their fami ly . Indians still inhabited the area, wi ld animals roamed the hi l ls, and food was secured wi th a gun.
Old Highland County history books say the first Baptist church in the area was bui l t in the 1830's on Rock L ick Creek. Meetings, however, had been held at the home of Job Haigh as early as 1804. This l i t t le church probably had a great influence on James G. Frazer who later became a minister. A family f rom Pennsylvania by the name of Storer, gave the land and donated money to build the church on Rock L ick. A l i t t le family cemetery is sti l l on the Storer farm at the site of the church.
James George Frazer purchased a small farm just across the creek f rom the Storers. He bought i t f rom John and Susan (Johnson) McGrew. The editors of this document have a copy of the original deed, dated 1846. The McGrew's daughter, Margaret Jane, became the 2nd wife of Hierson Frazer and the grandmother of Elva (Frazer) Shelton, one of the editors.
The l i t t le Baptist Church on Rock Lick prospered unt i l there was a disagreement on the slavery question. About one half the members left the church and formed a new one called Brush Creek Congregation, later called Mount Zion Baptist. The Newkirk family donated the land for Mount Zion Baptist Church and Cemetery- As a chi ld Elva (Frazer) Shelton can remember visiting this old church and cemetery. The roof was falling j n , but the pews were intact. The pulpi t was there, and upon i t was an open Bible, just as though wait ing for some one to use them.
3.
Both of these early Baptist churches are gone, along wi th one at Fairfax, called Concord Baptist. The early Frazers, Shaws, Hooks, and Stewarts are buried at Old Concord Cemetery. More informat ion about these old churches can be found in the book, "Hi l ls of Highland" , by Mrs. Ed Ayers, published in 1971.
James G. Frazer received his license to marry people on 12 July, 1837 at Hil lsboro. In Ohio only ordained ministers could be licensed. However, we do not know where or when he was ordained, but the churches where he preached are: Russell's Station, Lynchburg, Sinking Springs, Sun Fish Creek, and Mount Zion. He served as a supply pastor at New Market, and it is the only Baptist Church in the area sti l l holding services.
The family has several old Bibles found in the home of one of the daughters of the preacher. The books are small, leather covered, weathered, and contain many names and dates. One of these is the Samuel L. Henderson — Mary Fi tzpatr ick Bible. It records their marriage and the names and dates of the births of their three daughters.
Baptist ministers received no salary in the 1830's, so it was necessary for some one to manage the l i t t le fa rm. Hierson Adam Frazer, the preacher's son, and his mother, Locky, ran the farm while the preacher and his daughters rode the circuit. Horse back was the only transportat ion.
-*3_fc I. Hierson Adam Frazer, son of James G. and Locky ° " Charlotte (Boatwright) Frazer, was born 10 June 1823
in Campbell Co., Va. He died 19 March 1912 in Highland Co., Ohio. He had 2 wives and 15 or 16 chi ldren. He married 1st Nancy Thurza Shaw 20 October 1853. Nancy was born 5 July 1833 in Dodson Township, Highland Co., Ohio. Nancy died 30 September 1868. She was a daughter of Felix Nelson and Catherine (Nace) Shaw. Felix was the son of James and Catherine (Smith) Shaw of Adams Co., Ohio and formerly of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Catherine Nace was a daughter of Henry Nace of Highland Co., Ohio.
Hierson Frazer ran a Singing School. Many students learned music under his careful guidance. He loved to dance. The story is to ld that he danced so much one night that he wore out a new pair of shoes.
Hierson Frazer never failed to vote in an election. When he was 80 years of age, one of his sons suggested he come in a buggy and take his father the 2 miles to town. After walking twice f rom Virginia to Ohio, this was a real insult to the old gentleman. He f lat ly re-
fused the offer and walked the 2 miles to vote.
The Frazer Clan is said to be psychic in that they seem to be able to predict events before they happen. Short ly before his death Hierson Frazer had a dream. He saw dozens of caissons being pulled by white horses. In each box was the body of a dead young man. When he to ld the fami ly of his dream he said, "Something terrible is going to happen to our Count ry . " This was a l i t t le before World War I .
Hierson was k ind, t h r i f t y , even tempered, just in his dealings wi th others, and strict in disciplining his chi ldren. Although he never belonged to any church, he was deeply religious. The daughter-in-law, who helped care for hime the last 6 years of his l i fe, said this about h im , "He was the sweetest old man I ever knew."
Hierson and Nancy (Shaw) Frazer had 8 or 9 chi ldren.

Annie May (Frazer) Hanson died 10 Oct-ber 1960. She was 75 years of age. She is buried in the Rondo Cemetery. Rondo, Arkansas. Rondo was the name given to the old A rmy Fort and Settlement. When the railroad came through, the town was moved nearer the railroad and named Texarkana. Since it is in both Texas and Arkansas, they gave it the name of both states and part of the town is in each state .

In the early days ministers often had an open bible on their tombstones. On this one is wr i t ten. "Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God . " Charlotte has clasped hands on her tombstone with the first finger of the right hand extended. From an old book it said, "Th is sign of an early secrel society, and had something to do wi th English roya l t y . " We have not been able to prove th is. A t the bo t tom of the tombstone her Beatitude reads, "Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven".
The authors have in their possession proof for everything in this document unless otherwise stated.
We have Bible records, a diary, Court records, cemetery records, Revolutionary War records f rom the National Archives at Washington D. C , and Slate Library at Richmond, Virginia. We have Wills, deeds, and estate settlements
