in Clermont Co., Ohio. He married ABIGAIL SHAW 05 May 1806 in Salem Co., NJ. She was born 15 Apr 1787 in Deerfield, Cumberland Co., NJ, and died in Clermont, Ohio. Notes for JOHN DEMARIS: Moved to Ohio due to bad winter in NJ -- Immigration: 1813, Went to Philidelphia, then over the Allegheney Mountains taking possessions in a wheelbarrow. Arrived in Chilo, Ohio in 1816, then to Felicity. Michael Swing, who with John Murphy, his brother-in-law established the Methodist Church in Bridgeton. HISTORY: Personal account of descendants: "John Demaris and Abigail Shaw, his wife, were native of New Jersey as given in the biography of Harmon Demaris, his son, born 1820. Tradition has it that the ancestors came from Alsace Loraine, France (near Switzerland). This information being relayed by the Motier and Gwinn families of near Moscow, Ohio. Which had come from Bexwest, Switzerland, and lived near by Elias Demaris below Moscow, Ohio; and upon the hill where the Gwinn nursery man, Eliase on Ray a near by stream. Tradition claims that Abigail was of or near by Harrisburg, Pa. (Mechanicsburg). John and Abigail likely had some family on leaving New Jersey as they were befriended at Philadelphia by that wealthy and noble French philanthropist,Stephen Girard, who assisted so many emmigrants in the Ohio Valley. He had equipped father John and his family with supplies and a wheel barrow which they pushed over the Allegheny Mts. descending the Ohio River to Chilo, the oldest town in Franklin Twp. where he landed in 1816. We find that lots in that place in 1826 were owned by Eliga Shaw, who married Lida Bowen of New Jersey. Was he perhaps the brother of Abigail? Later the older members of the family were found near Moscow, Ohio, John at one time lived just north of Felicity on the right side of the road leading to Bethel leading to the brick house built by Ray Ross. Some think he died in a distant trip to Illinois. He spoke only German until he was 16. Rumor had it that after John died in Illinois, Abigail went back for her mother in Penn. and brought her to live with her in Ohio."


DEATH: John was on the tax list for Clermont Co., Ohio in 1834, but not in the 1840 census. Family tradition is that he died while on a trip to Illinois and was never heard from again. She was born 1808 in Ohio, and died 11 Dec 1857 in Ottumwa, Wapello, Iowa. He married (2) MARY MARTIN 30 Mar 1858 in Ottumwa, Wapell, IA. She was born 11 Jan 1830 in Ohio, and died 05 Oct 1904 in Milton, Umatilla, OR. Notes for ENOCH DEMARIS: Sometime after 1838, Enoch and Eve moved to Shelbyville, Illinois, buying land from Eve's father. After 4/17/1846, they moved to Ottumwa, Iowa. Enoch and his second wife, Mary, moved up the Oregon Trail in 1863 with his brother and their families. They arrived in the Walla Walla Valley on 9/4/1863. Jacob Demaris, son of Enoch and Eva was born June 19, 1840 in Shelbyville, Illinois. He lived there until he was six years old when his family moved to Iowa. He lived there until he was 21 when he went back and enlisted in the Civil War at Shelbyville, 1861. He served over 15 months and got back to Ottumwa, Iowa just as his parents with oxen and covered wagon train were ready to go to Oregon. Jacob Demaris left the train on the Old Oregon Trail and went up to the mines at Virginia City (Alder Gulch) in Montana, arriving in Walla Walla Valley two years later, where his folks had settled. Jacob Demaris and Lacy Albertine Marquis were married December, 1874. To this union, five children wer born; Pearly October 8, 1875, died 1894; Cora Etta, born March 29, 1877; Asa Albert, born December 2, 1878; and Francis Leslie, October 4, 1882; and James Harvey, born July 23, 1887 and died September 5, 1944. Asa and Cora were born near Milton, Leslie at Uncle Jim's in Walla Walla and Harvey in Burns, Oregon. Jacob Demaris and family moved to Burns,


Oregon in 1884 where he ran horses on the range. His wife was an invalid. He returned to Basket Mountain, near Milton, in 1889, where his wife died in 1891, leaving Jacob with four boys and Cora, his daughter as housekeeper. In 1900, Jacob and Amos Demaris bought the Enoch Demaris place, Jacob taking the half with the house on it, where he lived until he sold it to Leslie in 1919. Leslie and wife (Lawura Clark) and son, Merle, lived there until the Old Enoch Demaris house burned a few years later. They rebuilt on the same site, a modern farmhouse. Merle and his family still live there, making five generations of Demarises on this place. After Jacob sold the place, he lived with his children until his death, Septemeber 9, 1928. He was a charter member of the G.A.R. ENOCH CHARLES DEMARIS, born in 1842, in Ohio, was in several battles of the Civil War, being invalided home in 1862. April 3, 1863, he married ALMEDA FRANCES ROBERTS of David County, Iowa. The DEMARIS wagon train was formed in Iowa and started west in April, 1863, arriving in Walla Walla in September. The wagon train consisted of 63 wagons and over 80 people, and livestock. They encountered no Indian trouble but passed graves and burned wagons from an earlier train. ENOCH and ALMEDA had four children, JOHN HENRY, born February 28, 1864, in Walla Walla, SARAH, born in 1866, and IRENE CASCADE, born in 1868 at Milton-Freewater. ROBERT was born in 1876 in Iowa where ALMEDA was visiting her parents. When ROBERT was three months old she returned to California, traveling by train to Salt Lake City and by stage coach to Alturas, California. They traveled to Central Oregon with several other families. JOHN HENRY DEMARIS married CYNTHIA JANE O'KELLEY October 3, 1883. they had nine children. JOHN died in 1917. SARAH DEMARIS married JEFF O'KELLEY October 3, 1883. they had two children. SARAH died in 1888. IRENE DEMARIS married (1) FRANK HEREFORD in 1887, they had one child; (2) JAMES E. FULLER in 1902; (3) LOYD YANCEY in 1935. IRENE died in 1968. ROBERT married MARY H. BAKER, June 4, 1913. The had one child. ROBERT died in April, 1963. MARY died in February 1965. ALMEDA married CLINTON ORRICK in 1881 and they lived in the Mitchell area for several years. About 1910 they moved to a small holding on Mill Creek. CLINTON died in 1916. ALMEDA lived on the Mill Creek property for several years, then sold it and lived in Prineville until 1930 when she became ill and moved to IRENE's home on Mill Creek, where she died in 1934. JOSEPH's father, NIMROD O'KELLEY, had come from Ireland in time to be mustered into General Jacksons army of Tennessee. This family had traveled the Old Oregon Trail from Missouri in 1845 and taken one of the early land claims in Benton County near Corvallis.


In Central Oregon they farmed and worked at sawmilling. Five years later, 1885; LYDIA CAROLINE ELLIOTT, along with her family, the JOHN D. ELLIOTTS, came to Crook County. Her family also had traveled the Oregon Trail and settled at Rickreall, in Polk County, where Lydia was born on the farm of Colonel James Nesmith, U. S. Senator from Oregon during the civil war. The Elliotts settled on McKay Creek operating a saw mill, then onto Summit Prairie and Upper Ochoco, where LYDIA met her future husband, "JEFF" O'KELLEY, then a young widower with two small children; THOMAS and MABLE. They were married at the Jake Stroud Ranch, in the Ochoco Valley in 1892, and to this union were born; one daughter and five sons, making eight O'Kelley children in all. JEFF excelled at first aid and nursing the sick and traveled many miles when needed. In Octover, 1907, he himself; became ill and passed away at his ranch near where the Marks Creek - Mitchell state highway joins the Old Ochoco highway. Shortly after his death, LYDIA and her children moved into Prineville, her family grew up on the west end of First Street. Three of the boy's: THOMAS, FRANK and CHARLES, served in World War One. THOMAS and CHARLES lost their lives as soldiers. FRANK came home to Prineville to marry, where he worked and retired from the Prineville Railroad. Son, JOHN O'KELLEY, kept his home in Prineville, worked and retired from road construction. The youngest son, MARIAN, married and settled in Portland and worked in trucking on the Portland Docks. Daughter MABLE, married ROBERT ZEVELY, Post Master for many years in Prineville. Daughter, JOSEPHINE, married a U.S. Forest Service Ranger, LEE BLEVINS, and lived at the Ochoco Ranger Station for many years. At this date, 1980, only MABLE and JOSEPHINE are living. In 1951, LYDIA became that years Crook County Pioneer Queen. She lived in her little white cottage, behind her son, JOHN's home on East First Street almost till the time of her death in 1967. Her family moved to Tacoma in 1904. In 1911 they homesteaded on McNeil Island. There was no high school on the Island, so she commuted by boat to Lincoln High School in Tacoma when she was 14. In 1917 she went to work for Atty. Homer T. Bone and worked for him and his associates for many years. She married Warren (Ted) Demaris in 1926. In 1933 she went to work for the IRS and retired in 1955 after 22 years. She and Ted moved to Santa Barbara, CA, after retiring where they lived several years before moving back to Tacoma. Ted died in 1963. In 1978 she married


Harry Huson who died in 1992. She made many friends through the years and was loved by all. We will remember her marvelous sense of humor, her generosity and her loving ways. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends, but our warm and happy memories of her will linger forever. She is survived by her sister, Mae Johnson, Bellevue; nephew, Duane Johnson (Bonnie); nieces, Diane Rollf (Bill) and Jean Norman (Allen)and their families; stepson, Don Huson (Randy); stepdaughters, Anne Bock and Deena Huson and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, Chris and Anne Norgaard; sisters, Helen Ramsay, Dena DeWaide, Lillian Larson and brothers, Homer and Robert Norgaard; nephew, Dick Larson and stepson, David Huson. Ross of Milton-Freewater: brothers, Archie and Fred Demaris of Milton-Freewater; sisters, Mrs. Harold Biggs, Ettie Huber and Mrs. Ida March of Milton-Freewater and Mrs. Goldie Shelton of Walla Walla and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services are planned for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Milton-Freewater Christian Church with the Rev. Russell Myers officiating. Interment will be in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery here. He was born July 11, 1890, in Dry Creek near Weston. he farmed on Dry Creek and raised cattle until 1927 when he moved to Milton-Freewater. He continued farming and then became interested in the real estate business until ill health forced his retirement. He married Laura Warner in 1917 and she preceded him in death in 1947. He then married Mrs. Ida Fuller, who survives him, in Lewiston, Idaho in 1948. His parents were Henry and Jennie March, pioneers of this valley. Mr. March was a member of the Milton Seventh-day Adventist Church and a former memeber of the Real Estate Agents Association.


Survivors include his wife Ida, at the home; his son, Harry March of San Jose, Calif.; his daughter, Mrs Virgil (Marjorie) Weathers of Adams, Ore.; his sister-in-law Dena March of Milton-Freewater; seven grandchildren. six great grandchildren. and several nieces and nephews. (White) Demaristhe former a native of Ohio and the latter of Kentucky. They came to Washington in 1863 and located on a farm in Walla Walla County on Dry Creek, where the father built a log cabin with a clapboard roof, board floor and stick chimney, which was the home of the family for several years. Later the parents removed to Walla Walla where both died. In their family were 12 children, of whom 9 still survive. Orlando Demairs was 12 years of age when he accompanied his parents on their removal to Walla Walla County, where he grew to manhood and attended school. After completing his education he remained under the parental roof until he attained his majority, giving his father the benefits of his labors. He then purchased a farm and engaged in its operation until his retirement, since which time he has made his home in the city of Walla Walla. He is still owner, however of 700 acres of land, well improved and under cultivation. In 1875, Mr. Demaris married Miss Mary M. Lewis, a native of Iowa, which state was also the birthplace of her parents, Reese and Mary (Jackson) Lewis, who brought their family to Walla Walla County in 1863 and settled on a farm where they continued to make their home throughout the remainder of their lives. They had four children and three of the number are still living. The children born to Mr. and Mrs. Demaris are as follows: Laura and Frankie both deceased; David, Fred, Guy and Alva and Edwin. Guy and Alva are now in the government service at Fort Riley, Kansas. The three other sons now operate their father's farm. By his ballot Mr. Demaris supports the men and measures of the Democratic Pary and he has served as school director. He is a memeber of the Odd Fellows Lodge at Dixie and his wife belongs to the Rebekahs taking a very active and prominent part in its work. She is now past Noble Grad. Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Harry (Julia) Welker of Portland, mrs. MOSS – The industrious and enterprising orchardist and agriculturist whose name heads this article is one of the substantial citizens and representative men of this section of Umatilla County, having passed almost his entire life within its precincts, receiving here his education and gaining here his brilliant successes in the business world. He was born to James T. and Serelda (Crowley) Moss, on September 16, 1861, in the state of Missouri, but was brought by his parents to this county four years later. They settled near the state line, south from Walla Walla, where our subject remained until he had reached his majority. At that time he launched out into business for himself, buying a farm ten miles north from Milton, where he tilled the soil for five years, then sold out and bought the old home place. Upon this he lived until three years ago, when he sold that also and bought property in Milton, where


he now lives. Here he has a fine fruit orchard of five acres of excellent farm land east of town, which is well improved with everything necessary to its successful operation. The marriage of Mr Moss and Eva E Garred occurred on March 24, 1889. Mrs Moss is the daughter of William and Lucretia (Howard) Demaris, and has one son, Dallas Garred, by her first husband. Mr and Mrs Moss are members of the Christian church in Milton and are very active in its affairs and the advancement of its interests. He is a member of the A.O.U.W., and the Pioneers of the Pacific, and the Masons. He has ever been active in political matters and is now serving on the city council, his ability and integrity being recognized by his constituency, whom he never disappoints by failure to give wise and efficient service. Mr and Mrs. Demaris celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on October of 1947 CHARLES DEMARIS CELEBRATES HIS 90TH NATAL DATE Milton-Freewater -- (Special) -- Charles E. Demaris was honored Wednesday at his home, 16 S.E. 11th Ave. here, the occasion having been his 90th birthday. He has lived his life entirely in the Walla Walla valley. Mr. and Mrs. Demaris have lived here 17 years after nearly 50 years of wheat farming. Congratulations were in order from his family and friends together with gifts and greetings. Those present enjoyed portions of the 90-candle lighted cake. Demaris attributes his living enjoyment to "outdoor life." Charles' obituary reads as follows: UMATILLA'S OLDEST 'SON' DIES AT 97 Milton-Freewater (Special) -- Charles E. Demaris of Milton-Freewater, Umatilla's oldest native son, died Monday at his home here at age 97. The colorful pioneer was honored at Pendleton on his 95th birthday, in 1959, as the oldest living resident born in the county. He was born Feb. 10, 1864, at the family home six miles east of Milton-Freewater. He was the son of William and Lucretia Demaris, Umatilla County pioneers. Demaris's father died when he was one year old while the family was living in Walla Walla. The family home was located where the Book Nook now stands. After living in Walla Walla for eight years his mother remarried and they moved, homesteading on the Walla Walla River. As a boy he delivered goods for Beck and Winans, which was located where Gardner Co. now stands. On Oct. 18, 1887 Demaris married Mary Florence Wallace in Walla Walla. They made the home of his youth on the Walla Walla River their home. The little log cabin was their home for 13 years, after which it was abandoned when they built a new one. Demaris had led a colorful life which included appearances as a jockey on the old Walla Walla race track, wheat raising and many activities in community affairs. At the age of 12 he was employed as night herder for the horses used by crews of men engaged in getting out ties in the Blue Mountains for the various western railroads.


After his marriage he took up wheat farming and operated on a large scale, having had a prominent role in the growth of this branch of agricultural activity along the foothills of the Blue Mountains. In 1939 he retired from the ranch life and moved to Milton-Freewater at the old home known as the Stone property at 16 S.E. 11th Ave, Milton-Freewater. On Oct. 18, 1937, the Demarises were honored by their friends with a 50th wedding anniversary observance. Mrs. Demaris died Feb. 13, 1954. Demaris had been a member of the Milton-Freewater Christian Church since 1893. He also was a member of the Milton-Freewater Masonic Lodge and received his 50-year Masonic pin eight years ago. Demaris is survived by two daughters, Mrs. J.J. (Mabel) Merrifield and Miss Blanche Demaris, both of Milton-Freewater; four grandchildren, Gilbert Merrifield, Mrs. Howard Murray, both of Milton-Freewater, Mrs. Dee Poole, of Seattle, and Dorsey William, Jr. of Sacramento; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and one nephew, Dallas Garred of Walla Walla. A son, Dorsey Demaris, died in 1949. Funeral services will be at 2p.m. Thursday at the Milton-Freewater Christian Church with the Rev. George Knox officiating. He became ill


Friday morning of a heart disorder and his passing was so unexpected it was a shock to his many friends. Mr. Walter was born in Wayne County, Ohio, April 5, 1875, and came to Oregon with his parents 57 years ago. They traveled over the prairies in two covered wagons, leaving Kansas July 8, 1882. The party reached the Grande Ronde valley in October where they stopped for a month before crossing over the Blue Mountains by way of the old Thomas and Ruckles Road. Surviving relatives include his widow, Mrs. Cora Walter; three daughters, Mrs. Erwin Beard of Walla Walla, Mrs. Vance Morris of Milton and Miss Esther Walter of Portland; and four brothers, Clarence, Oscar and Warren Walter, all of Milton. Funeral services were held at 2:30 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Christian Church, Rev. Kenneth C. Hendricks officiating. Demaris MILTON-FREEWATER --Mrs. Laura Jane Demaris, 75, of 914 S. Mill St., died at a local nursing home Thursday morning. She had been in ill health for some time. Mrs. Demaris was born March 30, 1891 in Oklahoma. She came to Walla Walla in 1911, and on Nov. 5 of that year she married Francis Leslie Demaris in Milton-Freewater. They moved totheir home on Walla walla River where they lived until 1943, when they moved into Milton-Freewater. He died on April 23, 1964. She is survived by one son, Meryl C. Demaris of Milton-Freewater; one sister, Mrs. Anna May Clark of Oklahoma City; two brothers, Andrew Clark of Phoenix, and James Clark of Oklahoma. She is also survived by three grandchildren and twogreat-grandchildren. She was a member of the Pyythian Sisters Herculean Temple No. 27. Your e-mail address was the only one I could find in the description of family history for the Demaris line. If I have reached you in error, my apologies. My mother and father were Leonard and Frances Cowart. Mother was Frances Helen Demaris, first daughter of Harvey and Grace Birdsell Demaris (Clements). I noticed some of the information described Dad as having died and been buried in Maricopa County, Arizona. While he died there, he was cremated and is now buried with my Mom in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery. Mother died, rather than Santa Fe, NM, in Issaquah, Wa. The dates are correct, just not the locations. I recently had a memorial service and interrment for them in Milton-Freewater. Their grave is near Grace Demaris Clements, Ila Jean (Demaris) Gibbons and Wilbur Gibbons, and several rows away from Joseph and Lucy Cowart, Leonard's parents. Hope this helps. I enjoyed reading a little of the history when I found it on-line and it helped me recall names I had heard and relatives of my folks' that had visited and written them during my childhood. I also recall Cheryl Ann Demaris, Merle's daughter, as she and I went to Whitworth at the same time in the mid-60's. Second Ave., Milton-Freewater, died April 26, 2010, in Walla Walla at the age of 92. Funeral services will not be held at Verne's request. Munselle-Rhodes, 902 S. Main St., M-F is in charge of the arrangements. LaVerne was born in Cache Hollow, Milton, on May 25, 1917, the son of James H. and Grace Irene (Birdwell) Demaris. He attended schools in the area and graduated from McLoughlin High School. In 1936, he entered the CCC and served there until 1937 as a Sawyer. Verne joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Dec. 11, 1941. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater from January 1943 to May 1945. He saw action on Bouganville Island, British Solomon Islands, Guam, Marianna Islands, Iwo Jima and Volcano Islands. He was wounded in action on Iwo Jima with phosphorus burns. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept. 17, 1945, as a sergeant. He received a Purple Heart, a Commendation Medal, a WWII Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, a Combat Action Ribbon, and a Honorable Service Lapel Pin for his service to our country. He returned to M-F and was employed by Rogers Cannery and Key Equipment for many years until his retirement. He also operated an orchard on the South Fork of the Walla Walla River. LaVerne married Juanita Harris Ramsey of M-F. She later preceded him in death. He is survived by step-granddaughters Dana Pace of Bothel, WA, Cami Eastep and Dr. Melisa Ramsey-Carmi of Walla Walla WA; and a nephew James Gibbons, and a niece Sherry Marr. His parents, sisters Jean and Frances and stepsons Dan and Dennis all preceded him in death.
