Obituary: 7-12-1912 GRIM REAPER TAKES PIONEEROnce again, the Grim Reaper has laid a heavy toll upon our devoted people, and once againhis harvest of the dead has been fruitful and freighted with the soul of one of St.Francis'oldest and best citizens, in the person of Hon.W.E.Williams, ex-sheriff, prominentpolitician and successful farmer and business man, who passed to the arms of Him whogave, on Thursday evening, July 11,1912, of apoplexy. "Bill Williams is dead!"Mr.Williams had been known to be in failing health for some months, but had not beenconfined to his bed. He was up in town until 10 am, when he went home complaining of aneuralgic-like pain in his head. A physician was called, and to quiet his pain was given ahyper dermic of morphine, which seemed to give him relief. When the family took himsupper, they found him dead.Mr.Williams was a native of Maury county, Tenn.. having been born there May 16,1850,and was thus entering his sixty third year. His family moved to the county in 1855, hismother having died some three years earlier. At the age of twelve, his father died and hewas thus left an orphan. In 1871 he was married to the only daughter of CaptainEdward HAWKINS, who died of pneumonia scarcely five weeks after they had plightedtheir troth. On the last day of July 1873, Mr.Williams was again married to Miss EddieChambliss, youngest daughter of Judge.& Mrs. Edwin Mallory, of this county, and totheir union fifteen children were born, six boys, Eugene, William, Robin, Edwin,Mallory, and Russell, six girls, Mrs.Lef Winship of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; Mrs.Fred Atkins,of Holly Grove, Ark.; Mrs.Geo.E.Parker, Miss Bessie Mae, Sweetie or Evelyn, and baby, all of whom survive him. Mr.Williams was elected sheriff for ten years starting in 1892,when he voluntarily resigned. In 1906, on the death of Dr.J.D.McKnight, he wasappointed sheriff, and remained until 1908, when he stepped down again. He has servedsince 1902 on the State Board of Charitable Institutions. He was a man of rugged, sterling integrity, sober and industrious. His good word earned the nickname, HonestBill. Funeral was held in the Mt.Vernon cemetery, services being conducted byRevs.J.K.Farris and F.W.Gee of the Methodist church.

Biography:Continued on Eugene Williams:

the career of the father further data appears elsewhere in this volume in the sketchdedicated to him. He served as Sheriff of St.Francis County for a period of sixteen yearsand is a man of power in the political world in this section of the state. After completingthe curriculum of the public schools of Forrest City Eugene Williams, the immediatesubject of this review, attended a male academy at West Point, Mississippi, for one year. When sixteen years of age he returned to his home city, where he assumed theresponsibilities of deputy clerk in the office of his father, who was then the Sheriff of thecounty. In 1902, at the age of 20 years, he promoted and organized the Bank of ForrestCity, of which he is manager and cashier. This stable monetary institution has a capital ,surplus, and undivided profits amounting to eighty-three thousand dollars and it is animportant factor in the financial affairs of eastern Arkansas. In politics, Mr.Williams isaligned as a loyal supporter of the cause of the Democratic party and he has ever done allin his power to advance the general welfare of the community. He is Treasurer of theSt.Francis County Levee Board and it may be said here that this organization has beenone of the most potent influences in the development of this section of Arkansas, where ithas been the means of enriching the planting interests to a point never dreamed of in theearlier days. This board is notable also for being the strongest single force in the politicalaffairs of the state. In the most significant sense of the word Mr.Williams is aresourceful, public-spirited and eminently useful citizen. In a fraternal way he isconnected with the Masonic order, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, andother representative organizations. In the year 1901 was celebrated the marriage ofMr.Williams with Miss Sadie Moseley, of West Point, Mississippi, They have twochildren, Eugene Jr, and Mortimer. In their religious faith Mr. & Mrs.Williams arestaunch adherents of the teachings of the Methodist church and they are prominentfactors in connection with the best social activities of the younger generation in this city.----------------------------------------From World War I Draft Registration:Sep.12,1918Location:Memphis, TennesseeWorking in Banking:Security Bank & Trust Co.-77 So.Main Street-Memphis,Tenn.Contact:Sadie M.Williams------------------------1920 United States Federal CensusHome:1440 Madison Ave.-Apt.201-Memphis, Tenn.Name: Eugene WilliamsHome in 1920: Memphis Ward 17, Shelby, TennesseeAge: 37 yearsEstimated Birth Year: abt 1883Birthplace: ArkansasRelation to Head of House: HeadSpouse's Name: SadieFather's Birth Place: Tennessee Mother's Birth Place: ArkansasMarital Status: Married Home owned: Rent Image: 462
