King’s Bake Off

Yr 9 Impact Day

Years 10 and 11 are very important for students; revision and hard work are a necessity for the good results wanted. Teachers and students alike, both become even more dedicated during this time period; leaving little time for Year 10’s compulsory lesson- PSHE. A solution, however, is to have several days in the year where the whole day is dedicated to one subject, this is spread across the school and all Year groups participate. Monday the 5th of December 2016 was the first of the few days to come. While Year 10 engaged in a series of PSHE based lessons, Year 9 took part in a day of History. As one of the largest Year groups in the school, Year 9 was split into numerous groups, each to partake in the same activities before moving to different computer suites around the school and completing the final task. Period 1 and 2 were set up as a tour around the barracks- information to answer questionnaires was given along the way. Firstly, we made our way to one of the many cellar entrances based around school and spoke about why the door was placed and built the way it was. We spoke about the windows and a few of the defense mechanisms used in the event of a bombing. This was very interesting, however, for me, the next part was twice as intriguing. We were able to go into the cellars underneath KVH and explore the rooms whilst looking at a couple of old German paintings on the walls. Seeing the size of the rooms and the seemingly unending corridors was eye-opening to the fact that there was a whole network of tunnels carefully thought out beneath our feet; a large majority of Year 9 were pretty clueless to the quantity of passages in Mansergh. After touring the underground, we walked towards the guard room- not without passing a few other points of interest- and stopped to admire the carvings in the walls. These were definitely thought-provoking, something easily seen when entering camp. The last point we observed was the officers mess. The freezing weather made the wait outside horrible, but the actual inside made the trip worth it. Not only was it a really beautiful place to see (for those of us who hadn't already) and full of really interesting details but it was also really warm. Our questionnaires were finished after visiting the Officers mess and so we made our way back to school.

Yr 9 Impact Day

Once break was over, we spent lessons 3,4 and 5 creating a video. Our aim was to be spies, or detectives of some kind, who had been tasked with finding key factors which prove the area is actually a military space. Using a movie making software, we paired up and produced a video which included pictures and information we'd learned that morning. Backing tracks, unusual fonts and colours were all used for added aesthetics. This was a creative and fun way of constructing a summary for our newly found knowledge.

Overall, for Year 9's, the IMPACT day involving history all day was a very informing, day. We were able to explore and create alongside learning, a benefit of a somewhat hectic day in the school year. The next days with a collapsed timetable are looked forward to and personally, I think that the day was a great success.

Yr 8 Impact Day

2016

On Monday the 5th of December, King’s School students had a day off timetable or an impact day. The impact day consisted of different year groups doing different activities throughout the day, be it drama and art for the year 8`s for the upcoming play or history for year 9`s. The day consisted of many fun activities depending on the year group with year 8 having possibly the best activities to do in many pupils’ opinions.

What is the point of an impact day you may be wondering? Emma Bryson confirmed that, “The im-pact day was set up to provide PSHE to Year 10 pupils, allowing more lesson time for GCSE English & Maths. It then quickly evolved into an opportunity for Yrs 7 – 9 to indulge in trips and creative activ-ities without disturbing normal lessons. Years 11, 12 & 13 also benefitted by having extra time to focus on their studies.”

Milly Fox, a year 8 pupil who participated in the day said the following; “Drama was very fun to do as it gave you an insider view of the performance of `Disco Inferno` what it is based on and almost giv-ing you a sneak peak of a certain part of the performance. The acting was very fun as it got to bring out our confidence and boost our skills in acting. Dance was also very fun as we got to perform a dance which the teacher had made up. Art was very fun as it helped us create a picture in our heads of what the show could be by creating many things for the play like the tickets. Altogether I liked art the best as you were able to put forth some of your creativeness about the school play.”

Despite the little bit of initial confusion in the morning, the day worked out very well, with all stu-dents thoroughly enjoying it and wanting to have another one soon.

6 weeks of every term, King’s students participate in enrichment sessions. This term, this included a journalism group which allowed students to photograph and report on activities around the school. Below are a few of their stories!

Enriching King’s School

King’s School is located in Gutersloh with a mixture of over 250 boys and girls ranging from ages 11 to 18.

Six weeks of every term, there are activities to choose from called Enrichment. These usually go on for about 40 minutes, once a week, every Thursday. There are a wide range of activities to choose from including Journalism (of course), Table Tennis, Catering/Cooking, Netball, Football, Photography, Origami and Book Club. However, these are just some of the many activities you can choose from.

Students ranging from Year 11 and below choose activities to do for the six weeks. We have three choices to choose and you can either get the first or second or third choice depending on whether the club is full.

Last week, we took our time to interview different members of different clubs on why they think enrichments are affective and ask them what they like about the choice they got. Our first stop was Catering.

The waft of delicious food meeting your nose when you open the door. It was heaven! The product they were making was Sausage rolls and I absolutely adore them!

We first interviewed the teacher, Mrs Florence and she stated that due to ‘time restrictions, they have to try to make the easiest recipes to fit time.’

Enrichment

Last week King’s School started Enrichment for this term; a time where students in Years 11 and be-low choose an activity in which to participate for forty minutes every Thursday. There is a wide vari-ety of activities to pick from, including Cooking is Fun, Origami, Hair and Beauty, Jumpers for Goal-posts, Netball, Photography, Mindfulness and Table Tennis. One member of Kings’ Staff definitely approved of the after-school activities, saying it “gives students the opportunity to meet with others who share the same interests, where they might otherwise have been prohibited.” Another com-mented that “It’s nice to see that even in our widespread community, the students can come to-gether to do something that they enjoy.”

‘Cooking is Fun’ is among the most popular choices. Last week the students made sausage rolls (recipe included below.) The teacher said that it was a shame enrichment was not longer, as due to time restrictions they can only make limited products, but the students seemed to enjoy the cook-ing, and even more so the eating! Method for making Sausage Rolls You will need: Pastry Sausage Meat Egg or Milk Heat oven to 230. Grease a baking tray. Divide the pastry into two and roll each half to a long strip (7.5 cm.) Roll the sausage meat with floured hands into a sausage as long as the pastry strip, place on the

edges of the pastry. Roll up the pastry to enclose the meat, dampen the edges and seal well. Cut into lengths, place on the baking tray and brush with egg or

milk and make three cuts on the top. Bake for about twenty minutes until golden brown.

On Thursday 20th October 2016, King’s School Gutersloh held a termly music concert. In the concert, a total of 10 people/groups signed up, all of which amazed the audience and even music teachers. There were a variety of acts which people performed, ranging from solos on piano to the King’s Choir. Everyone was amazed with every act, and not once did someone laugh at another’s misfortune / error. The running order was as followed:

Anglo German

Carol Service

On Tuesday 6th December, King’s school were proud to host an Anglo German Christmas Carol Service in the Martin Luther Kirche in Gutersloh. The school holds the celebration every year and it is well attended by the English and German communities alike. This year the service was presided over by 26 RA regiment Padre Graeme McConville and Pastor Walczak-Detert and was supported by the Gutersloh Military Wives

Choir, Marienfeld singers and the Gutersloh Music Centre Concert Band.

Ezme Gill, a Year 7 student at King’s, opened the service by singing the first verse of Once in Royal David’s City before the rest of the congregation joined in. The students from King’s have a large involvement in

the service with a number doing the readings in both German and English. 26 RA Regiment was represented by Major Crawford who read the second lesson and the town of

Gutersloh was represented by the Mayor of Gutersloh, Herr Schulz who read the fifth lesson.

The musical talent of the students was also displayed with performances from the school choir who were supported by the Haig school choir and the school Brass and Guitar groups which each played a number.

The event was a great success and started off 2016 Christmas festivities in style.

E-Safety Newsletter

May saw the launch of a new

e-safety newsletter, called “DITTO”,

aimed at schools and parents.

Its aim is to keep

KVH (King’s Vocational Hub)

KVH has started 2016-2017 school year where it left off in July… with student successes!

All KVH students underwent a Level 2 Emergency First Aid at Work qualification this term. Katrina Mason from Immediate Action delivered the qualification over four separate 2 day sessions. The feedback from Katrina was that “KVH students were a privilege to teach. They were engaging, inter-active and fun. All of the students displayed a maturity beyond their years and performed extreme-ly well both for the practical and theoretical elements of the courses.” Katrina will be returning in the New Year to deliver sessions on Sexual Health. A letter detailing the course content will be emailed to parents of the students involved in the sessions before the Christmas Break.

Currently, KVH has 38 students working on 10 different vocational qualifications as well as Function-al Skills and GCSE Maths and English lessons. Some KVH students sat their GCSE Maths and English resit exams in November and students will receive their results in January. Functional Skills have al-so started with their exams with many successes already completed in the recent English Reading exam.

As always, work placement providers in BFG have offered their support in providing high quality learning opportunities for our students. The responsibility of having a student on placement four or five days a week is great, but so are the potential benefits. Since July 2016, eight KVH students have gone directly into employment in the area they completed their vocational qualification in. We have already had one student this year be successful in securing full-time employment in what was her work placement. This goes to show that with hard work, commitment, and taking the opportunity to learn from others can go a long way in securing future employment.

In the New Year, KVH pastoral sessions will continue and will be focusing on sexual health Jan/Feb, a Cultural Day March/April, Career Planning in May and, all being well, a KVH team building day in June. Further details will be shared with students in tutor periods on Fridays.

Extended medical arrangements & services to King’s

The School Nurse (Bernie Collier) continues to deliver regular and comprehensive Sexual Relationship Education in the PSHE (personal, social health education) curriculum to year 7-11 (11-16 year olds)

Students who require routine repeat medical prescriptions, asthma reviews, verrucae treatments, and other minor treat-ments can be seen at Mansergh Medical Centre

Any sexual health queries or emergency sexual health problems that senior students refer to the nurse are dealt with confidentially and within a legal safeguarding protocol. If a student needs to be referred to a GP or Nurse Practitioner for emergency sexual health treatment, the School Nurse can action this.

If a student needs advice about contraceptive methods or requires routine repeat prescriptions for contraceptives, the School nurse can provide this guidance but will refer the student to a Nurse Practitioner or GP to be seen and assessed at Mansergh Barracks Medical Centre in Gutersloh (next to the Dental Centre.) The Nurse Practitioner has prescribing rights. The Medical Centre in Mansergh Barracks Gutersloh provides a specific drop in clinic every Monday lunchtime. 13.00-14.00hrs. Students must book in and out of school with the School Nurse (Bernie Collier) to ac-cess the clinic. This is a confidential service and is provided within Department of Health Guid-ance and Safeguarding Protocols.

The normal arrangement for sick or injured students remains unchanged. Please do not send your child to school if they are unwell and unfit for school. If they suddenly become unwell whilst at school or are injured, they will be assessed by the School Nurse. If she feels that they are unfit to carry on in school, she will contact you and kindly request that you collect your son/daughter from school.

A visiting optician has a clinic at all of the Medical Centres. He provides a clinic for King’s students at Mansergh Barracks Medical Centre every Tuesday. The School Nurse is not involved in this clinic and all appointments need to be booked via the receptionists. Parents should discuss this with the individual Medical Centre receptionists or Practice Managers.

General

Reports

Yr 10 & 11 reports have a target grade and our regular ‘progress reports’ to parents indicate not only the effort and behaviour of students, but also the grade at which they are working.

To try to make this information more meaningful for parents we apply a ‘traffic light’ colour code with grades to highlight our assessment of where a student stands in relation to target grades.

So, if a student continues to perform as they have been doing our forecast is as follows:

Red - Student is unlikely to reach target Yellow - Student should reach target

Green - Student likely to exceed target

Students who achieve a ‘green light’ early in a year may well have their target raised.

KS3 reports grades show the effort and behaviour your child is displaying in class. We are not currently reporting against a students’ expected age-related performance, owing to the new organisation of the curriculum, our staff do not have enough information to give parents an accurate evaluation of their child’s performance and thus we would not wish to communicate misleading or incorrect assessments.

The parent portal gives you secure access to the school centralised database which holds details on your child’s reports, attendance, timetable, achievement, behaviour, examinations and assessments. You can access this information 24 hours a day from any internet connected PC or mobile phone.

The parent portal is particularly useful for those parents on deployment. If you can get access to the internet, then you can keep up to date with how your child is doing in school.
