When dog owners walk their pets at night, it’s important that they can be seen by cyclists and drivers. A dog’s furry coat may be dark and absorb any available light. This means a different kind of coat is needed for the dog to wear to help it be seen.

Design a Reflective Dog Jacket

Walking at night can

be dangerous without reflective

clothing.

Your task is to design a jacket for a dog to wear on a night-time walk so that it can be seen and will stay safe.

You will need to research, design and then evaluate your dog jacket.

Look at the pictures below. Write down your thoughts about the design ideas behind these reflective objects.

Why is it important for this object or clothing to be reflective? What is the reflective object made of?

Does it have a pattern? Why?What colours have been used? Why?

Prototype The first version, or

test version, of a new product or invention.

The final version is developed from the

prototype.

When designing your dog jacket, you will need to decide on the following:

Materials: Are they good at reflecting light?

Colours: What colours are good at reflecting light?

Shapes or patterns: What designs have you seen on other reflective clothing? Why do you think they were designed like that?

Comfort: Will your design be practical for a dog to wear?

Design

Possible materials:• Fabric• Beads• Stickers• Sequins• Foil/shiny paper

Use one of the dog templates to design your jacket.

Annotate your design to show what materials you could use and why you would choose them. If possible, glue or tape some small samples of the materials that you would use to your design template.

If possible, make a prototype of your reflective dog jacket design and display it in a fashion show for your class.

Take a look around your classroom at each dog jacket design. Which do you think would be best at keeping dogs safe on a night-time walk? Why?

If you were to design another jacket, what changes would you make to your design and why?

What further questions do you have about reflective materials? How could you investigate this?

Most surfaces or materials reflect light, but they reflect light in different amounts. The smooth polished surface of a mirror reflects almost all the light that hits it. In fact, mirrors reflect light so well you can see yourself in them.

Surfaces that are not smooth like a mirror do not reflect light well. These surfaces scatter the light or absorb it. Can you think of any surfaces that do not reflect light well?

Let’s investigate how different materials reflect light!

How well does it reflect light?

Method 1. Look at the mirror, pieces of foil and wall. Which do you think will reflect light best?

Write down your predictions. 2. Place the mirror securely on a table. 3. Close the curtains or blinds in the room. Lower the lights so the room is dim. 4. Shine your torch into the mirror at an angle. Is the beam of light reflected well?

How can you tell? Record observations in your results table. 5. Next, repeat the activity with a smooth piece of foil and record observations. 6. Repeat again with the crumpled foil and then with the wall. Record your results.

Equipment: • A torch• A mirror• A piece of smooth aluminium foil• A crumpled piece of aluminium foil• A blank wall

ConclusionMy results show that

Did your predictions match your results?

Prediction:I predict that will reflect light the best. I think this because

I predict that will reflect the least amount of light. I think this because

Results

Did it reflect light? (Yes/No)

Observations How well was the light reflected? What did you see?
