ProgramDescriptionThe emphasis of Algonquin College’s four year interior design degree programis upon becoming a professional interior designer, with a focus upon criticalthinking and applied research.Students take part in a 14-week paid co-op work term in the summer followingtheir third year of study, and are trained to become leaders in the rapidlyevolving field of interior design. Upon graduation, students are eligible tobecome registered members of ARIDO (Association of Registered InteriorDesigners of Ontario), and are able to pursue graduate studies ininterior design or allied fields.

The Interior Design profession is complexbecause it deals with three-dimensionaldesign solutions for the spaces in whichwe live and work.

Designers create spaces which function for various groups and situations,conform with relevant life-safety laws and codes, and are aesthetically pleasing.Through a forward-thinking curriculum, specialization seminars, professionalelectives, and a focus on international and socially-responsible interior design,students learn to be exceptional problem-solvers and professionals who can thinkclearly and effectively to create solutions.

What is anInterior Designer?An interior designer is a personwho designs the myriad of spaceswhich make up the interior builtenvironment. In essence, InteriorDesigners are part of a team whichcreate the built spaces which weinhabit and occupy our lives. Othermembers of the team could include architects, engineers, psychologists,trades people and landscapearchitects, etc. Interior Designerscreate spaces which functionappropriately and are in conformitywith relevant life safety laws. It is amulti-faceted profession in whichsolutions are created from both acreative and technical perspective.

What is the diff erencebetween an InteriorDecorator and anInterior Designer?

An Interior Designer is “a professional whoidentifies, researches and creatively solvesproblems to interpret the function andquality of interior environment. A designeris responsible for performing servicesrelative to interior spaces, includingprogramming, design analysis, spaceplanning and aesthetics, using specializedknowledge of interior construction,building codes, equipment, materials andfurnishings. Designers are formally trainedto prepare drawings and documentsrelative to the design of interior spaces inorder to enhance and protect the health,safety and welfare of the public.”(Source: NCIDQ website).

In Ontario, the title “Interior Designer” isprotected under a provincial Titles Act.This means that it is illegal to call yourselfan Interior Designer unless you havesuccessfully completed your educationat a recognized school, have passed a seriesof professional exams, and are a registeredmember of the Association of InteriorDesigners of Ontario (ARIDO).

The practice of Interior Design encompassesa much broader scope of reference andresponsibility than that of an InteriorDecorator. Interior Decoration is theapplication of decorative finishes such aswallpaper, fabrics, furniture, etc.Interior Decorators generally work inresidential situations.

PLEASE NOTE: Credits received from the InteriorDecorating program cannot be transfered to theInterior Design program.

Our program is focused on trainingstudents to become responsible,ethical and responsive designerswithin the Interior Design profession.

We offer students a strong designfoundation in the first year of studyfollowed by three years of study inspecific design specialties such ascorporate, health care, residential,retail and hospitality design. At theend of their education, graduates willhave a strong foundation in all aspectsof design as well as an understandingof which area of specialization appealsto each specific graduate. Because we are a degree, we teach students technicalskills as well as theory. As confirmedby principals of leading interior designfirms, our graduates are ready to “ hitthe ground running,” and are ableto contribute in their place ofemployment immediately.

PortfolioRequirements:The Purpose of a Portfolio:The portfolio submission in extremely important in terms of your overallassessment. The purpose of the portfolio is to provide a sampling of yourbest pieces of art/design demonstrating your conceptual, problem solving,technical skills and personality. Your portfolio will be reviewed and evaluatedby Interior Design faculty and will allow us to determine your suitability forthe education available within the Interior Design program.

Applicants are encouraged to incorporate evaluation feedback and resubmittheir portfolio a second time should they initially fail to meet the program’srequirements.

What goes into an entrance Portfolio forthis program?Candidates applying to the Interior Design program must include all of theelements listed on the following pages in their portfolio. This applies fordigital and hard copy submissions.


a) 10-15 examples of your own work

Choose your best work that features your wide range of skills.Some examples to include may be:

•Pencilandinkdrawings •Multimediapresentations •Sketchesofongoingworkshowingyourideas,observationsandimagination •AutoCADdrawings •Handdraftedarchitecturaldrawings •ArtisticPhotography •Graphicdesign •3Dmodels

PLEASE NOTE: Each piece should be clearly labeled indicating the title and medium used. Any work that is 3-dimensional should be photographed.


b) Completed Home TestThe Home Test is comprised of two components. Clearly identify the home test componentwhen you are labelling and organizing your portfolio.

1. A sequence or series of separate elements depicting a journey/story told in seven stages.The journey could be any kind of journey (e.g. narrative, imaginary, fictional or literal).Explore your creativity and concept work. If an explanation of your journey/story helpssituate your piece then please include.

2. A hand pencil sketch of an interior public space. Be sure to include what is seen inboth the foreground and the background of the space. Please select a public spacewhere you can sit and create this sketch such as a shopping mall, library, coffee shop,school, museum, art gallery, etc.

No samples of the home test are shown as we want you to use yourcreativity and we are looking to see your own interpretation.


c) A short essay of 300-500 wordsThe essay is a required element of your portfolio presentation. It is to be approximately300-500 words that describe your interest and knowledge of Interior Design as aprofession. Introduce yourself and explain why you wish to become a professionaldesigner and how you have been influenced.

Include any architectural/design influences, books, designers/architects (or their work),mentors who have infl uenced you, or any Interior Design projects that have inspired you.You might want to research on various Interior Design-related web sites such as ARIDO,IDC, IFI, CIDA or NCIDQ.

How to present your work:A well-organized, well-executed presentation isextremely important. It is your only method ofcommunicating who you are to us. Your workcan be presented in a standard portfolio caseor submitted online as a PDF. The size of theportfolio case and the PDF submission willdepend upon the size of the work beingpresented but should be no larger than 11” x 17”.Be sure to organize your work into a cohesivepresentation, labelling each item. This may beachieved by mounting all work on either landscapeor portrait format stiff cardboard (black, white orgrey) and by organizing it by category (ink drawings,pencil drawings, etc.) You should also labelyour work and include a very briefdescription if you think appropriate.

When is the portfolio due?Portfolio submission date is April 30th. After April 30th portfolios will be assessed as required until the program meets the maximum number of registrants.

NOTE: Please label your portfolio “Bachelor of Interior Design Portfolio” on the outside of your submission. If submitted digitally, please label your disc “Bachelor of Interior Design Portfolio” and include your name, email address, telephone number, etc.

Candidates can only be considered for acceptance once all admission requirements have been met.


Where do I send my portfolio?Your submission can be presented in a standard portfolio case, or submitted online as a single PDF. Be sure to include your name, email address, telephone number and student number. Organize your work into a cohesive presentation, labelling each item, including the size of the actual work. Bridging Courses:Algonquin College is proud to offer a new opportunity for designers who wish tostay professionally competitive in the marketplace and/or are interested in pursuinggraduate studies. This opportunity is particularly important because beginning January 1, 2015, a four-year bachelor’s degree will be the minimum standard of accreditation for both internand registered membership categories within the Association of Registered InteriorDesigners of Ontario (ARIDO).

If you already possess a 3-year advanced diploma in Interior Design and are looking toupgrade your current credential to an applied degree, we now offer a series of bridgingcourses which will enable graduates with this diploma to upgrade to a degree credentialin Interior Design. Successful completion of these entirely online courses will enable youto then enter the Bachelor of Interior Design program with our Co-op work term at the end ofthe third year of study.

The online bridging courses cover areas of the curriculum which are not normally part of adiploma program and include topics such as: history and theory of design, sustainable issues,critical thinking and academic writing, social responsibility and cultural diversity in design.
