Design and Layout (part one) Elements of Art Shape & Form (Drawing Concepts) Illustrator REVIEW: What Are They? The Elements of Art are fundamental ideas about the practice of good visual design. An element of art is simply a component, like a tool, that the artist uses to accomplish what he/she sets out to create. The parts that provide structure to a piece include: Line Shape / Form Value Space / Perspective Texture Color REVIEW: Elements of Art Vocabulary Line Shape / Form Value Space / Perspective Texture Color Line Review The most basic element of art, Line gives the eye explicit directions about where to look. Characteristics of a Line Width thick, thin, tapered Length long, short, continuous, broken Direction horizontal, vertical, diagonal, curvilinear, perpendicular, parallel and zigzag Texture jagged, graceful Shape Shape is two-dimensional enclosed space. It has height and width but no depth. Characteristics of Shape Organic Shape Organic shapes are found in nature. These are perfect natural beauties. Characteristics of Shape Organic Shape Organic shapes are natural looking and flowing shapes. They are more rounded and curved in appearance. Organic Shape Georgia O'Keeffe. Completion Date: Style: Precisionism (or Cubist Realism) - A style of representation in which an object is rendered in a realistic manner, but with an emphasis on its geometric form. Form All forms first begin with Shape. A form has height, width and depth and is perceived as three-dimensional. On a flat surface, an artist will create the illusion of a 3 dimensional form through the use of value (shading) and space. ShapeForm Example: Shape & Form How are shape and form being used in these images? Shape: two-dimensional (height and width) Form: three-dimensional (height, width and depth) Concept Review Line Describes a shape or outline. Tells the eye where to look. Groups related objects and divides unrelated objects. Shape An enclosed space with defined boundaries.
