Design and TechnologyLIPA Primary School
Intent
Design and Technology should be the subject where mathematical
brainboxes and science whizzkids turn their bright ideas into useful products.
[James Dyson]
Intent
At LIPA Primary School, Design and Technology is
taught through our Project Based Learning
approach.
Design technology prepares pupils for the developing
world where technology is rapidly changing.
Children are challenged to become creative problem
solvers and risk takers, as individuals and as a member of
a team. Using their creativity, imagination, knowledge
and skills, pupils design and make products that will
solve real and relevant problems. They will also consider
people’s needs and wants in designing their products.
Children will reflect upon and evaluate past and present
design technology to gain a greater understanding of
how everyday products are designed and made.
Elements
• Ideas/ design research- independently develop a range of
original ideas.
• Create- independently use technical skills and processes to
create a final piece of work.
• Evaluate- critique their own and professional works.
• Designers- know about great designers linked to your year
group/ project.
Skills :
Opportunities to build and develop these skills across all year
groups. Progression maps showcase the key learning for each skill
in every year.
• Food
• Textiles
• Construction
• Mechanisms
• Electronics
• Digital Media
Intent

Evaluate and analyse designers, products and their
own.

Design and Technology Teaching Sequence
Implementation
• Considering purpose and function in design criteria.
• Use talk, drawings and mock ups to inform final product.
Exploring and experimenting with different techniques, structure, cooking processes, tools and
mechanisms.
• Mini project outcome or part of project outcome.
• Applying knowledge of ingredients, tools, materials and techniques to a finished piece.
• Introduce/explore a new
technique• Opportunities to compare
and contrast• Exploring and testing
products
Implementation
Sketchbooks used from Year 1 to Year 6
Sketchbooks are individual to each child and show their
creative journey.
Sketchbooks will continue with each child throughout their
school journey.
Evidence in Sketchbooks:
Teaching Sequence – children will be aware of the
learning process in Design and Technology.
Some steps of the sequence may be recorded on Seesaw
(Online Learning Journey).
Children’s annotations – showing their creative dialogue
and evaluation.
At the beginning of each year, a basic skill focus summary
will be added to the pages of each sketchbook.
Teachers will have their own Sketchbooks to model and guide
their class.

Vocabulary
• Art and Design and Technology word of the
week posters up in the classroom.
• Design and Technology Vocabulary
progression grid.
• Recap of vocabulary used in previous year to
support children in activating prior
knowledge.
Opportunities for Design and Technology
throughout the curriculum
• Taught through Project Based Learning
• Reading Mastery Cycle-Non-Fiction: Designer
or Product Study.
• Our children will continue to develop
Design specific vocabulary and engage in
evaluation and a creative dialogue.
Skills by the time our children leave us…
• Chefs (Food)- be able to prepare food whilst
understanding the ingredients needed.
• Engineers (Mechanisms )- choose appropriate
materials for a given purpose and use them safely
and appropriately.
• Product Designers (Electronics) – able to apply
scientific knowledge of electricity to design and
create products that use circuits.
• Mixed Media Specialists (Textiles)- able to use
a range of stiches to join fabrics and make quality
products.
• Architects (Construction)- . Design structures
choosing app processes and build frameworks
using a range of materials
• Digital Media Giants (Digital Media)- use
digital media to support research and product
development
What do our children think about Design and Technology at LIPA?
It’s good for your
mental health
because you can see
what’s around you
and create stuff.
- Y5 ChildMy Mum is a
designer. She
makes jewellery.
She helped me to
make my own
necklace.
-Y1 Child
You can draw and
show your ideas.
– Sonny, Y3 Child
You can work
together in a
group and you
can help each
other out.
-Y5 Child
When I am designing I
feel really excite
because you don’t
know how it will turn
out but you can keep
going and it will be
something
- Y5 Child
It’s fun to make
thing because
you’re designing
something that
someone can play
with everyday.
- Y2 Child
When you’re
designing
something you
can make it
brighter and
more beautiful.
- Y1 Child
I feel happy an
calm when I am
creative. You can
let your mind
focus on one
thing.
Y4 Child
I like drawing
and making
lots of things.
It makes my
happy.
- Reception
Child
