Residential settlement Pruitt-Igoe, St. Louis, Missouri, 1951, Minoru Yamasaki

IntroIn the 1950s and 60s due to vast war destruction many German cities were in big need of living space. Housing associations satisfied this demand by constructing a great number of residential developments. With mostly three room-apartments of 65m² the new neighborhoods were precisely designed for the requirements at that time.

Today these apartments no longer meet the needs of the current tenant concerning size and organization. The neighborhoods are still popular and considered to offer high quality of life, but they lack of handicapped-facilities and accessibility which make them unsuitable for the aging population. Additionally, for both single households and young families the settlements often don’t offer sufficiently attractive living space concerning size and flexibility.

Confronting demographic changes, the active development and expansion have become a priority issue for the housing associations. The objective is to propose a diversity of tenant structures which can blend different generations and keep these neighborhoods vital.

TaskThe aging of the residents raises questions on the future of those districts. Who will be the future inhabitants? How do they want to live and in which configurations? In the context of large urban estates, how can changes be carried on in a socially responsible way? How will the settlements be able to adapt to new forms of living? How can a new community be created in the settlements of the 1950s, adding up new quality and opening new possibilities? How can one link the old to the new?

The seminar aims to find and develop prototypes for growth and urban enhancement of settlements of the 1950s. The design seminar is divided into two parts: The first part is a typological research, where examples of settlement conversions and low-cost construction principles, quick and easy to assemble, will be analyzed and gathered in a final catalogue. In the second part, those findings and concepts will be synthesized consequently, strategies and prototypes for growth and enhancement of these settlements will be developed. Scales of 1:10.000 up to 1:20 will be used.

SiteShip-building and aircraft construction were relevant roles in Bremen which led to more than 62% of its destruction in World War II. The city was mostly rebuild with new constructions and in many cases with garden cities as the Gartenstadt Vahr or Gartenstadt Süd. As a continuing tradition of the Bremer Reihe row housing was mostly used. This traditional typology was characterized by deep-plan single family houses of mostly two or three- stories high without a backyard house. In the 1950s this typology emerged as free-standing linear housing units.

Detailed information on the different sites will be available in a separate document.

The design and research seminar is a one semester course. The design studio is devided into 4 phases: analysis and synthesis, concept, concretion, finaliszation and layout. After a typological research you will investigate on urban strategies to then develop a conceptual approach, a prototype for growth and urban enhancement of settlements of the 1950s. Guests are invited to talk about their strategies for the development of post war settlements from their practice. Both studios – the master class and bachelor class – will work on the same subject, but focus on different aspects.

CooperationThe design studio and research seminar "ADD" will take place in cooperation with the chair of urban design of Prof. Jörg Stollmann. For all ongoing questions concerning building construction we strongly recommend consulting the chair of building construction of Prof. Klaus Rückert.

PiVThe PiV – project integrated seminar – focuses on construction and techniques. Experts, engineers and architects will give input lectures and attend our studio.

Theory seminarIt is recommended to combine the design studio with our preliminary theory seminar. The seminar "ADD" is working on a comparative study of settlement conversions and low-cost construction principles. The seminar will explore design proposals and theories for these settlements being included in a final publication.

CritsWeekly crits in the studio, pin-ups and presentations with external guest critics will follow the process.

GradeThe final grade for the design studio will be composed of three grades (design studio, PiV and urban seminar).

ExcursionThere will be an excursion to Bremen and additional field trips in Berlin to particular building typologies.

Team PhilosophyAlthough you might work in small groups of three people, we consider all members of the design studio together with us at LIA being one big research team.

absolutely necessary that you work in the studio in room A 814. Only then synergies of working side by side are used effectively. You should obtain a key for the studio and the lockers from our tutors.

QualificationThe design studio is addressed to highly motivated students with high skills in drawing, modeling and other media, who understand designing as a process in which new solutions will be explored.Erasmus students are explicitly welcome.

Application / Mailing ListPlease send an email with your name, student number, specification of your semester and your motivation to [email protected]. Also hand-in the task 0 on Wednesday, April 18, until 2pm. You will get an email confirming your participation on that day.

ReferencesBelow and on our website you will find a catalogue with reference projects and a bibliography. Please use them for inspiration. Please also use our selected books and articles (Handapparat) in the architecture library, 2nd floor.

ClotureTo cloture the studio we will meet one week after the final presentation. You have to hand-in a project brochure and CD / DVD with all poject data, clean the studio, return keys and you will get your grades and Schein.
