Office Urbanism, 2010

Intro“[The conventional office building] with its efficient, functionally consistent, explicit, homogeneous interior and simple hierarchical structure is considered to be regular and stable. The form directly mimics the arrangement of work. It succeeds very well. However, working methods change. Organizational structures also change. The ostensibly successful working environment then becomes a convention which suppresses new ways of working. In such an office building, the architectural form itself prevents the development of changing work styles. Even repeatedly addressing the symptoms cannot change the form of such a building, and it is unable to adapt to evolving work styles. A "better office building" is no good. What is required is an utterly new

"standard" for office buildings.” (Abe, Hitoshi in: Japan Architect Vol.50, Office Urbanism, p.34, Tokyo 2010)

In this sense we would like to rethink today’s working environment and find new solutions for an inspiring and innovative working space – an experimental space which allows new forms of working. We set the focus on laboratory buildings because they often offer working environments which are more than just office spaces with a tidy sequence of working units with chairs and tables.

TaskThe task of the design studio is to search new concepts of laboratory buildings, new interpretations of the theme in the context of today’s city. The precise program or a possible programming of the laboratory is part of the task and should be developed according to the program of the surrounding - the laboratory thus getting programmatic and spatial extension of its environment.

Following themes are essential for the design of a laboratory and should be deepened during the design phase:

- interdisciplinary | mono-disciplinary- communicative | concentrated- formal | informal- short- | long-term- open | closed- neutral | grey | white- program | extra program

Students should develop their own design through an experimental design process, in variants and with models.

Design Studio

Start: Thursday, April 11, 10am, room A814, obligatoryTask 0: April 4 – April 11Workshop: April 11 – April 18Field trip: April 25 – April 29Presentations: mid-presentation May 30, final presentation July 11 (check timetable on our mydrive-server regularly for latest updates)

The design and research seminar is a one semester course. The design studio is divided into 4 phases: analysis and synthesis, concept, concretion, finalization and layout. After a typological research you will investigate on urban strategies to then develop a conceptual approach. Guests are invited to talk about their strategies from their practice. Both studios – the master class and bachelor class – will work on the same subject, but focus on different aspects.

CooperationThe design studio and research seminar "LAB" will take place in cooperation with the Humboldt University Berlin.

PiVThe PiV – project integrated seminar – focuses on equipment for laboratories with 1:1 mockups of furniture such as cubicles, office trolleys or informal meeting spots. Experts, engineers and architects will give input lectures and attend our studio.

Theory SeminarIt is recommended to combine the design studio with our preliminary theory seminar. The seminar "LAB" is working on a comparative study of laboratory buildings. The seminar will explore design proposals and theories for these being included in a final publication.

CritsWeekly crits in the studio, pin-ups and presentations with external guest critics will follow the process.

ExcursionThere will be an excursion to Stuttgart and Basel besides additional field trips in Berlin to particular building typologies.

Team PhilosophyAlthough you might work in small groups of three people, we consider all members of the design studio together with us at LIA being one big research team.

Studio Tom Sachs

Studio A814To accomplish the best results in a relatively short time period, it is absolutely necessary that you work in the studio in room A 814. Only then synergies of working side by side are used effectively. You should obtain a key for the studio and the lockers from our tutors.

QualificationThe design studio is addressed to highly motivated students with high skills in drawing, modeling and other media, who understand designing as a process in which new solutions will be explored.Erasmus students are explicitly welcome.

Application / Task 0If you are interested in our design studio you need to participate in our task 0. The handout will be on April 4 at 3pm in room A814. All further information and instructions will be given there.

GradeThe final grade for the design studio will be composed of two grades (design studio and PiV).

ClotureTo cloture the studio we will meet one week after the final presentation. We will clean altogether the studio, then you have to hand-in a project brochure and CD / DVD with all project data, return keys and you will get your grades and Schein (if needed).
