A 2-day workshop on Sept 24th and 25th that Prof. Vijay Kumar will conduct for a group of business executives and innovators on the topic of “Design Methods”.

Objectives

• To understand a broad overview of the design innovation process • To be aware of fundamental principles innovators need to keep in mind• To learn about structured methods, tools, and frameworks• To appreciate user-centered design frameworks• To help promote design-driven innovation initiatives in organizations• To broadly influence the innovation mindset among leaders in organizations

The Workshop

The workshop will present an overview of some of the key principles that drive “Design Innovation” followed by a broad look at the design innovation process and various tools, methods, and frameworks. An innovation process model that Prof. Vijay Kumar has developed over many years and published in the book, “101 Design Methods: A Structured Approach for Driving Innovation in Your Organization”, will be used as an overall organizing framework for the workshop (see diagram below). This model will have seven modes: sense intent, know context, know users, frame insights, explore concepts, frame solutions, and realize offerings. The workshop will primarily focus on four principles of design innovation and the related process and methods. It will discuss how design innovators and innovation leaders in organizations can effectively use this learning for research, training, project, and strategic applications.

Format and Audience

The workshop is intended as a series of short presentations mixed with hands-on exercises in breakout group sessions. Important topics about design innovation for each session will be presented in the beginning. Active participation contributing to the topic discussion is encouraged. The breakout work sessions will be to practice some design innovation methods. The audience will be (maximum 30 people) selected from across industries in India who will have an interest in the further application of design thinking on their projects and in their organizations.

Schedule

Day 1

Integrated InnovationThis introductory session will cover discussions on the following:

• Drivers - Design, Business, Technology, and Society• Four strategies• Design innovation process• Methods and illustration of a few• Introductions to projects

Know Context and Frame Insights Principle emphasized is “think of innovations as systems, not just offerings.” Methods like Ten Types of Innovation and System Diagram will be covered.

Explore Concepts Principles emphasized are “build innovations around peoples’ experiences” and “think of innovations as systems, not just offerings.” Methods like Concept Matrix, Concept Map, and Ten Type of Innovation for Concepts will be covered.

Day 2

Case study Look at an example project in which many of the methods discussed are shown as applied.

Frame Solutions Principles emphasized are “build innovations around peoples’ experiences” and “think of innovations as systems, not just offerings.” Methods for conceiving solutions like Concept Evaluation, Solution Roadmap, and Solution Storyboard will be covered.
