Project Objectives

• To carry out literature review on cell phone currency recharging methods, understand the latest trends, present practices and collect relevant data.

• To collect data of existing designs through product study, visual design exploration, user study and market study.

• To create QFD on basis of customer voice and arrive at PDS to meet the customer requirements.

• To generate concepts as per PDS, create 3D models of the generated concepts and select the final concept using weighted ranking method.

• To build a mock up model of the final concept and take user feedback.

Concept - 1 Detailing

Advantages Disadvantages

Elegant form derived from nature is attractive and ergonomic.

Adjustable secondary interface with hinge mechanism is delicate and there are chances of breakage.

Light weight and usability are other advantages of this concept.

Text orientation defined for LED indicators is not visually well pleasing.

Concept - 2 Detailing

Advantages Disadvantages

Attract customers through appealing design form incorporated in this concept. Add value to the service by improved usability.

Product form developed from boomerang shape metaphor have compromised the design on other areas such as receiver, screen orientation.

Easy to manufacture in two halves of plastic components since the overall device form is simple.

Accessibility for the thermal printer paper roll changer unit is not ergonomically well pleasing.

Concept - 3 Detailing

Advantages Disadvantages

Form derived from visual design study, neck of a swan makes the concept compact and light weight.

Design is delicate because of the form, hence it requires extra care in handling.

Position of power button is ergonomically well placed in this concept for better accessibility.

Manufacturing cost would be high for the outer covers which will increase the product cost.

Concept - 4 Detailing

Advantages Disadvantages

Rib structures with flat base provides better strength and elegant look for the concept.

As per the feedback in participatory concept selection method, Overall device form does not fit in to a retail shop environment.

Position of power button is ergonomically well placed in this concept for better accessibility.

Paper roll changer position on right bottom side has accessibility issue.

Concept - 5 Detailing

Advantages Disadvantages

Rugged form gives good strength for the device with proper base support.

Since the overall form is complex, it is difficult to manufacture.

Primary screen is removal from front side of the device which would enable easy SIM change if required.

Secondary screen is delicate and needs extra care in use. Rib above the receiver holder may obstruct the removal of receiver.

Conclusion

This project has given opportunity to explore new product

design and development process from an identified need in market.

It has been a wonderful experience to work as an individual and I

realise that the end result is really satisfying.
