An eclectic blend of antique and contemporary styling to create an interior that honors

the past but at the same time is modern and classic.

Kelsey is a 28-year-old up-and-coming interior designer in Manhattan. She recently got married to husband, Paul, who is a real estate agent. They just bought their first home, located on Long Beach Island, New York, within commuting distance from the city. Kelsey would like their new home to blend classical details and antique style fur-nishings with modern style. She would like to have an elegant but relaxing interior that they can come home to at the end of the day after the hustle and bustle of the city. The couple would love to entertain their friends and families in their new home. She

will also need space to occasionally work on projects from home on weekends and to

store her materials and resources. The kitchen should be comfortable, yet have

touches of sophistication and originality. Kelsey and Paul also love the beach, and

would like their home to have reminders of their favorite place. Her preferred color

palette includes neutrals with saturated blues and purples. Textiles should have unique

textures and patterns that blend the traditional and contemporary looks.

Textiles used are a mish mash of traditional and antique patterns with contrasting soft

velvets and smooth silk textures to fulfill the fancy for sophistication. The kitchen re-

flects the two styles through the distressed and aged looking cabinetry with the luxuri-

ous and very contemporary woven seatbelt chairs. The great room recalls memories

of the shore with the soft use of neutrals and light blues as well as the reflective quali-

ties of the glass and metal. Her home office is a chic retreat with deep blue walls

teamed with gold accents and distressed black finish, with space for work, relaxing,

and storage of design materials.

Portfolio Statement

Virginia Ellis

The following samples included in this portfolio are representative of some of my most recent work from this semester as well as my sophomore year. The purpose of the selection of these works is to display a variety in styles and skill sets.

Page 8: Design Portfolio

Green Peppers Poster

This project was a combination of work completed for our three-dimensional drawing course and rendering to practice drawing an object from different angles.

“Maisons-Sur-Mer”

This was the first project that I completed for my Residential Interiors class. We were given the floor plan of a condo at Myrtle Beach which is owned by High Point University and given free rein to renovate the space and specify any products to go into the space. I also completed a specifications book that went along with my poster identifying all of the products in my space.

“Teen Boy Bedroom”

This project was completed for my Textiles class this semester. It was a part of a group project where we were given a home and client description, each team member had to select a room and choose textiles to complete the room.

Elevation Drawing

This elevation drawing was done for my two-dimensional studio course as part of a larger project in CAD. Throughout the project, we had to follow along with our teacher and complete some of the work outside of class.

Symbols and Dimensioning Sheet

This was one of the first assignments I completed in my two-dimensional drawing class to learn drafting lettering technique. This is one of several assignments we completed to improve our lettering skills.

“Chic Antique”

This is the most recent piece in my portfolio. It was created for my Residential Interiors class as an entry for the High Point Design Center’s “Unity in Design” Competition. I had to find a client and focus my design solution around their tastes and from there, select products from the HPDC’s member showrooms. A rendered elevation, floor plan, and two perspectives of my proposed design were also required.

Throne Room

This project was completed for our Three-Dimensional drawing studio last year. The project was to create a throne room having learned the software program, Google Sketchup. We had to have a design concept as well, as our throne’s design was the primary focus and secondly, the design of the interior surrounding it.

Hospitality Corridors

This project was completed for our rendering studio course. Everyone was given the same basic corridor elevation and had to create three different historical styles with the base.
