DQ editorial themes 2016

The Australian Issue #60 (January 2016)What is Australian design, really? Is it a look? A material, or an attitude, maybe? Whatever it is, having this insight gives us the opportunity to strategically use our national brand to better position ourselves internally with the local market, and externally with global players. Australia has as much of a design identity as the Scandinavians, the Japanese and the Italians – we just haven’t pinpointed or really capitalised on our local equity yet. In this issue of DQ, we look at the top players and industry leaders in Australian design to explore what it takes to move Australian design to the next level, globally and locally.

The Authenticity Issue #61 (April 2016)If you’re anything like us, you’re tired of the same-old discussions around design authenticity. We get it – it’s become totally boring and not particularly helpful. In this issue of DQ, we are looking for a real discussion on the problem, and positive solutions going forward to challenge and solve the replica market in Australian design. If you’re sick and tired of the finger pointing sessions, then this issue is for you. We get the word from the industry’s heavy-hitters on how we as a design community can move forward and work around authenticity in a commercially viable way. We look outside the bubble of design to what we can learn from other industries such as Music and Film for example, on how they have been affected by illegal downloading and managed to move past it with premium cinema and concert experience streaming. We look at Fashion forgery and how designers and brands are not only defending themselves, but adapting their business model to compete more effectively. How can design take positive steps to creatively overcome this issue? This is a poignant, gritty, no bullish*t discussion on design authenticity – and it’s like nothing you’ve ever heard before.

The Design Thinking Issue #62 (July 2016)Despite what programs like The Block would have you believe, Design Thinking isn't just about how pretty you can make your kitchen look. It's about solution-based thinking and creative problem solving. Design Thinking is not something that can be purchased at Bunnings or arranged in your Instagram feed. It needs time to germinate and evolve, and comes from people, ideas and spirit of place. It also comes from a response to a unique set of circumstances – and this is the core of our industry; it's what makes certain businesses stand out from others, and it's not something that just anybody can do. In this issue of DQ, we look at the thought leaders in design who operate within the philosophy of Design Thinking to push us to achieve results beyond aesthetics.

The Idols Issue #63 (October 2016)The word "icon" has a strange effect on people. Think back to when you were a kid. Who did you idolise? A pop-star or a sports player, maybe? Did you buy their cd's? Their cereal brands? Limited edition deodorant or foot ware? The point is, that the influence of icons is powerful, and the worlds most influential brands are those with iconic figures attached to them. You can tell a lot about a brand by its famous figures, but an idol can come in many forms; people, products, places, even trends, movements and ideas. Here, we explore what makes us idolise people, products and places, but more importantly what impact these design idols have on the industry. Who are the people that we idolise, and why? Which products are iconic, and what do they represent? Why have we given cult-like status to movements such as Memphis, Post-Modernism and Bauhaus? In this issue of DQ, we look at your design idols, in every form they come, to determine why the idea of "idols" is so valuable to the business of design, and what your design idols are saying about your brand.
