DNA has an amazing level of complexity and is unparalleled asan information storage system. No other system can store somuch information in such a small package. The way the infor-

mation stored in DNA is used by the cell to make proteins is an exam-ple of irreducible complexity. Data stored in DNA is only valuable ifthere is a system capable of decoding the message. A naturalistic expla-nation for the origin of the complex flow of information from DNA toRNA to proteins is an insurmountable hurdle for evolution. Speaker JedEberly* examines the mechanisms for information storage and transferin living organisms, and demonstrates that these defy a naturalisticexplanation.

Evolution attributes the information within DNA to random muta-tions and natural selection. But do these factors give rise to new infor-mation? There are many kinds of mutations, and while some may con-fer a selective advantage in certain environments, they still result in aloss of the original data. Natural selection does not provide an explana-tion either, as it can only act on existing information.

Eberly maintains that these factors are incapable of explaining theexistence of information and in fact contribute to its loss.

Rapid advances in molecular biology over the past several decadeshave greatly increased our understanding of DNA and have opened awhole new field of manipulating cellular information by genetic engi-neering. This in turn has opened the door to the new and controversialfields of cloning, stem cell research, and synthetic biology. While thereis the potential for many benefits through ongoing research in thesefields, what is their relevance in the creation-evolution debate and howdo the worldviews implicit to this subject affect the moral and ethicalissues surrounding research in these areas? The latter half of the talkexplores some of the latest developments in these fields and attempts to answer some of the questions. Watch this presentation tolearn more about a fascinating subject!*Jed Eberly has a Bachelor of Science degree from Montana State University and anticipates graduation in May 2010 from OregonState University with a PhD in Biological & Ecological Engineering. He has received the Outstanding Senior in Biology award andfour scholarships. His research includes: ozone research with the BOREALIS high altitude weather balloon research project, a studyof hyperthermophilic archaea from Yellowstone National Park, and current work on development of a fusion protein for photobiologi-cal hydrogen production.

Are recent cold years a sign that global warming hasstopped? Is global cooling ahead? Would emission con-trols help to stabilize climate? Do we even know? At

this April meeting, former State of Oregon Climatologist GeorgeTaylor* offers an expert assessment of these and other questions, relating to the belief in “human caused climate change”.

In 1995, Henrik Svensmark discovered a startling connectionbetween the cosmic ray flux from space and cloud cover. Hefound that when the sun is more active—more sunspots, astronger magnetic field, larger auroras, stronger solar winds, etc.—fewer cosmic rays strike the earth and cloud cover isreduced, resulting in warmer temperatures.

This research is discussed as well as other relevant factors, utilizing a color PowerPoint presentation. Is it possible that variations in electromagnetic activity of the sun and fluctuationsin cosmic ray intensity from space result in the periodic warming and cooling of the earth? To find out, watch this presentation—as we consider the data behind a currently “hot” subject!*George Taylor is President of Applied Climate Services of Corvallis,

Oregon, specializing in extreme precipitation analyses and forensicmeteorology. Prior to founding ACS in 2008, Taylor served as StateClimatologist for Oregon for 19 years. He has been active in meteorolo-gy and climatology since 1971.Taylor is a Certified Consulting Meteorologist (CCM), the professional

certification of the American Meteorological Society (AMS). He has writ-ten two books: The Oregon Weather Book and The Climate of Oregon. In addition to being a member of AMS and CCM, Taylor has a California Lifetime Community College Credential, is former member

of the Board of Certified Consulting Meteorologists (Chairman in 1995), and two-time President of the American Association of StateClimatologists (1998-99 and 1999-2000).Taylor received a B.A. degree in Mathematics from the University of California and an M.S. in Meteorology from the University of

Utah.

At this May meeting, Dr. Vern Bissell* speaks on the topic:“Darwinism’s Toxic Heritage to Modern Science and PublicHealth.” Some points he discusses are:

1) Darwinism delayed acceptance of germ theory; 2) Darwinism tragically hindered the life-saving benefit of antiseptic surgery;3) Darwinian portrayal of some organs as “vestigial” led to unneces-

sary surgeries;4) The neo-Darwinian notion of “junk DNA” has been a severe retar-dant to the advance of molecular biology; 5) Darwin’s idea of embryological development has thwarted anddelayed embryological research;6) The neo-Darwinian notion of ascendancy of life forms via mutationand natural selection led to wasted careers and funding, in dead-endplant “breeding” experiments; 7) Neo-Darwinism has been and continues to be an impediment to sci-entific understanding of epigenesis (processes outside of the genes); 8) After microbiologist Werner Arber shared a 1978 Nobel Prize forthe discovery of restriction enzymes and their application to moleculargenetics, he spent much of the rest of his career searching in vain fornew species that may have arisen due to mutation of restrictionenzymes; 9) It is widely surmised that it was Darwin’s significant ego that hin-dered the understanding of Mendel’s genetics work, since manybelieve Darwin was aware of Mendel’s work and kept it under wrapssince it did not match his own idea of evolution;10) There are numerous examples in our own time of harmful medicaland public health practices coming from Darwinian pre-conceptions.Ill results of these wrong-headed notions include harmful effects of birth-control pills, the abortion-breast-cancer link, and the sig-nificant degradation of public health that occurs when babies are not breast-fed at infancy.Watch this presentation as Vern examines some of the time-wasting rabbit-trails and poisoned fruit of Darwin’s19th century science fiction.*Vern Bissell received M.S. and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering – Water Resources from the University of Maryland. He hasworked as a research hydrologist, a licensed professional engineer and recently retired from the National Weather Service. He isalso involved in creation-apologetics in local public universities and in mainland China.

For this June meeting, Rick Thompson shares a PowerPoint presentation of photographs and quotes, on the subject of camouflage in nature. He proposes that camouflage is not

necessarily a survival technique and could not have simplyevolved over millions of years. With hundreds of amazing exam-ples of camouflage and mimicry, Rick demonstrates the widevariety and types of animal deception, asks thought-provokingquestions about its purpose, and shows how it exhibits designwhich requires a designer.Rick is an Oregon-born artist, entertainer, writer and self-taught geologist who loves to share the beauty of the great Northwest. He was asked to prepare a presentation on camouflage andbecame so amazed that it engrossed his time for over a year, andrevealed much more than he expected.

That a global flood occurred within the history ofhumankind still remains one of the most disputed eventsof our world, despite substantial evidence which confirms

it. For this July meeting, high school science teacher and long-time DSA member Howard Mudder presents a multimedia pres-entation aimed at giving viewers information they can under-stand and present to friends and acquaintances who remain skep-tical of the Biblical record. The presentation includes video clips of how the flood might

have begun, how it is documented in human history, what evi-dences it left behind, and how modern science has misconstruedforensic data that verifies its occurrence. The apostle Peter foretold of a future time when men would not

only question the Flood, but the very creation by God of theearth and all things. Isn’t it interesting that we seem to be totallyimmersed in that time of doubting, and that much of the skepti-cism comes from religious scholars?Howard’s presentation features a wooden model of the Ark built

to the scale of the dimensions given in Genesis. Also shown areclips and photographs sent by the joint Chinese-Turkish expedi-tion that claims to have found remnants of the Ark at the 11,000foot level of Mt. Ararat in April 2010.Be sure to watch this presentation as we revisitNoah’s massive vessel and the catastrophe it survived.

DESPITE BEING ABLE TO EXPLAIN many big-picture observationsof the rocks and fossils, there are still a few hundred earth sci-ence challenges to the Flood model of earth history. One of

these challenges is the existence of billions of dinosaur tracks, millionsof dinosaur eggs, and scavenged bonebeds on thousands of feet ofFlood strata. Such observations seem to imply too much time to havehappened early in the Flood before dinosaurs all perished by Day 150.

Unique features of bonebeds include the observations that somedinosaur graveyards are huge, monospecific, and lack babies andyoung juveniles. Unique features of dinosaur tracks are: that practical-ly all trackways are straight, tracks are always on flat bedding planes, and baby and young juvenile tracks are rare. Such observations fromall across the world suggest that another hypothesis is needed.

An hypothesis is presented to explain the dinosaur data which hasbeen previously suggested in the creationist literature. This is theBEDS (Briefly Exposed Diluvial Sediments) hypothesis, which postu-lates that after rapid sedimentation during the Genesis Flood, the dis-tance between the top of the sediment and the Floodwater surfacebecame shallow. Such sediments would then become vulnerable toexposure by local drops in relative sea level caused by five mecha-nisms operating during the early Flood. There would of course be localrises in relative sea level inundating the BEDS. There could be hun-dreds of local sea level oscillations of various amplitudes and periodson BEDS during the first 150 days of the Flood, due to all five mecha-nisms.

Dinosaurs swimming in the water, finding refuge on log mats, ortrapped on higher refuges then could walk on BEDS and lay eggs. Agentle, local rise in relative sea level would cover up the tracks, eggs, and dead dinosaurs, preserving and eventually lithifying or fossilizingthem. Because of all the oscillations in local sea level, there could be multiple layers of tracks and eggs at any one location.

The BEDS hypothesis also can potentially explain a number of other seemingly puzzling features associated with dinosaur tracksand eggs, such as true mudcracks, raindrop imprints, coprolites, ripple marks, “paleosols,” burrows and tracks of invertebrates, pos-sible social insect nests, and bird tracks. BEDS can also explain these features when not associated with dinosaur tracks.Join popular speaker Michael Oard for this presentation as we consider a Flood model explanationof dinosaur bonebeds and tracks!

“But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; And thefowls of the air, and they shall tell thee: Or speak to the earth, and it shallteach thee; And the fishes of the sea shall declare unto thee. Whoknoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD Hath wrought this?”Job 12:7-8 (KJV)Dr. Henry Morris’s commentary on the above sets the tone for the

topic at this September DSA meeting, when he states:In the scientific study of zoology, geology and other sciences, the mostobvious lesson they will teach an honest student is the truth of their special creation by an omnipotent, omniscient Creator. p. 575;Defender’s Study BibleJoin popular DSA speaker Steve Hayley, as he examines one of

God’s amazing creatures—the dragonfly. These incredible animalsare studied in some detail, specifically noting their unique history, life cycle, and anatomy and physiology. Additionally, techniques arediscussed for “catch-and-release” study of these elegantly designedcreatures using simple equipment and a digital camera.

As with the study of any of God’s creation, the closer we lookand the more carefully we analyze what we see, the more evidentthe hand of the Creator becomes. Steve further demonstrates howwords like: beauty, design, order, purpose and complexity, really areaccurate descriptions of creation, while words like: random, chance, blind processes operating by means of mutational mistakes andundirected mechanisms become more and more illogical.

Ultimately, Steve’s hope is that you will enjoy applying what welearn in this presentation to your own observation and study ofGod’s creation. Join us as we take an updated excursion into the world of dragonflies!

Popular speaker Dr. Tom Kindell* discusses numerous examples ofextreme design precision. In a colorful presentation—similar instyle to Jobe Martin’s Amazing Creatures that Defy Evolution

series—Dr. Kindell examines several more creatures that also defy a“time, chance and magic” explanation. Some of these amazing creaturesinclude: The fresh water clam that produces an exquisite and animateddecoy “fish” on its back so it may attract fish to host its larvae. The Surinam toad whose unique physiology allows it to reproduceeven when there is no water available for it to lay its eggs in. The unlikely predator who hijacks the “missile defense system” of hisprey and then converts it for his own defense. The sex life of the dragonfly which has proved impossible to explainby evolutionary mechanisms. The giraffe whose amazing anatomical features keep it from “blowingits brain”. Also discussed are the “Frank Starling Mechanism”, without which we

would die from pulmonary edema within minutes. And, the complexity ofthe human brain—a supercomputer that defies evolutionary explanationand proves to be a truly “thought provoking organ.” Also, Dr. Kindell citesthe “single best example of irreducible complexity” (no, its not the bacteri-al flagellum). Join us as we consider even more examples of extremedesign precision in nature!*Dr. Thomas Kindell was once an ardent believer in the “fact” of evolution. However, through his exposure to the scientific case for creation, he became a zealous creationist. He has received advanced training in scientific creationism through the Graduate School of the Institute for Creation Research in Santee, California. He also received his M.A. inBiblical Studies from California Graduate School of Theology, and holds a Doctorate in Philosophy of Theology (major in philosophy ofBiblical apologetics).

This November presentation subject is a double feature: LivingPterosaurs and the Okanagan Lake Monster. Cryptozoologist(and past DSA speaker) Phillip O’Donnell begins with evi-

dence for living pterosaurs in ancient times, and moves into currentinvestigations. He shares his own experiences and those of dozens ofothers who have reported sightings of these amazing creatures inNorth America, particularly in the northwest United States.

Part II highlights Phillip’s research at Lake Okanagan, BritishColumbia, searching with Peter Beach (a micro-biologist for 30years and high school teacher) for the elusive monster called“Ogopogo.” From descriptions going back to the early AmericanIndians, it seems to be a plesiosaur-like monster and around 30 to 40feet long. With never before seen photographs, video, and newsof possible living dinosaurs—this is one presentationyou won’t want to miss!(1 hour, 58 minutes, $8)

Twenty years ago, Dr. Frank Watts, having studied at anInstitute for Creation Research workshop, was inspired toform a local organization to promote the scientific evi-

dence corroborating the Bible’s narrative of the Earth’s naturalhistory. A small group gathered to found the association, includ-ing Steve Hayley, Irene Tegeler, Steve Simpson, Will Tebbs,Phillip VanHoute, along with Frank and Ina Watts.

At this December 2010 meeting we celebrated DSA’s 20 yearsby looking back and considering the origins and history of ourgroup, what we stand for, and reflecting on what has been done.

As part of this meeting a special movie was presented (includ-ed on this DVD), containing video clips and photos of speakers, events, field trips and other notable moments. Time was set asidefor people to share DSA memories or funny stories, with a fewcomments from present, past and founding leaders. Also, photosof field trips and past group events are seen, displayed in themeeting room.

If you were here (or not), be sure to experience thisarchive of our 20th anniversary meeting, as we considered DSA’s “Past, Present and Future”.AS AN ADDED BONUS, we will hear a 5-minute devotional presented by Will Tebbs in 1996, at Sunnyside CommunityChurch.
