Design & Technology - Year 7 Summer Term - Home Learning Task 1 – In Design and Technology we look at the work of others to help broaden our understanding and inspire us in our designing. Below is a list of famous designers that we can research. • Alexander McQueen • Aldo Rossi • Charles Rennie Macintosh • Coco Chanel • Ettore Sottsass • Gerrit Reitveld • Harry Beck • Louis Comfort Tiffany • Marcel Breuer • Mary Quant • Norman Foster • Philippe Starck • Raymond Templier • Sir Alec Issigonis • Vivienne Westwood • William Morris. Here is my research of Charles Rennie Macintosh: Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born on 7th June 1868. He died on 10th December 1928. Mackintosh was born in Glasgow and died in London. He was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist. His artistic approach had much in common with European Symbolism. His work was influential on European design movements such as Art Nouveau and Secessionism and praised by great modernists such as Josef Hoffmann. His wife was called Margaret Macdonald and she produced work similar to Mackintosh. Below are some of his famous designs.

Design & Technology - Year 7 Summer Term - Home Learning

Task 1 – In Design and Technology we look at the work of others to help broaden our

understanding and inspire us in our designing. Below is a list of famous designers that

we can research.

• Alexander McQueen • Aldo Rossi • Charles Rennie Macintosh • Coco Chanel • Ettore

Sottsass • Gerrit Reitveld • Harry Beck • Louis Comfort Tiffany • Marcel Breuer • Mary

Quant • Norman Foster • Philippe Starck • Raymond Templier • Sir Alec Issigonis •

Vivienne Westwood • William Morris.

Here is my research of Charles Rennie Macintosh:

Charles Rennie Mackintosh was born on 7th June 1868.

He died on 10th December 1928.

Mackintosh was born in Glasgow and died in London.

He was a Scottish architect, designer, water colourist and artist.

His artistic approach had much in common with European Symbolism.

His work was influential on European design movements such as Art Nouveau and

Secessionism and praised by great modernists such as Josef Hoffmann.

His wife was called Margaret Macdonald and she produced work similar to Mackintosh.

Below are some of his famous designs.

Many people have used Mackintosh’s work as inspiration for their creations. Here is a

Mood Board to show some of the designs:

As you can see designers have created everything from jewellery, mugs, coasters, mirrors,

stained glass, furniture, wall paper, textiles, vases, banisters and railings and much more.

Task 1- In this space design a Mackintosh inspired product that could be sold online and

on the high street. Here are some ideas that you could draw in the space and adapt to

incorporate a Mackintosh design. Or you could be very creative and design your very own

product!

Idea: Sketch, colour and annotate your idea. (Annotation = add notes to explain it)

Task 2 - Now that you have been introduced to one of the famous designers, do some

research on another of the designers from the list. The best way of displaying your

research is to produce a Mood Board like my example for Mackintosh inspired design.

Task 3 - Now see if you can design a new product using your research as inspiration.

Idea: Sketch, colour and annotate your idea. (Annotation = add notes to explain it)

Design & Technology - Year 7 Summer Term - Home Learning – Task 4

In Design and Technology we look at the work of industry and companies to help

broaden our understanding and inspire us in our designing. Below is a list of design

companies that we can research.

• Alessi • Apple • Braun • Dyson • Gap • Primark • Under Armour • Zara.

Here is my research of Alessi:

Philippe Starck.

Alessi was founded in 1921 by Giovanni Alessi. He was born in Italy and raised in

Switzerland. A few years after World War 1, Giovanni Alessi started with producing a

wide range of tableware items in nickel, chromium and silver-plated brass.

The Italian ‘company’ began designing and mass producing housewares and kitchen

utensils when Carlo Alessi (born 1916), who is the son of Giovanni, was named chief

designer. Between 1935 and 1945 he developed most of the products Alessi made.

Carlo Alessi worked with his brother, Ettore Alessi to introduce the collaboration with

external designers in 1955.

To this day, they manufacture and market everyday items authored by a wide range of

designers, architects, and industrial designers – including:

Achille Castiglioni, Richard Sapper, Alessandro Mendini, Ettore Sottsass, Wiel Arets, Zaha

Hadid, Toyo Ito, Tom Kovac, Greg Lynn, MVRDV, Jean Nouvel, UN Studio, Michael Graves

and Philippe Starck.

Ettore Sottsass

Task 4 - Now use the internet to research many more of the designer homewares that are

designed and manufactured by Alessi. The best way of displaying your research is by

producing a mood board. This is a sheet of paper completely covered with a wide range of

their products. You can add words, in a suitable font to explain your findings. This can be

an actual cut and stick or an electronic version done in Word.

Design & Technology - Year 7 Summer Term - Home Learning – Task 5

Task 5 - Now it is your turn to be an Alessi designer. Use this space to design a new

product to add to their homeware range.

Idea: Sketch, colour and annotate your idea. (Annotation = add notes to explain it)
