PREFACEI am pleased to present the technical manual of “Designer Jewellary for income generation”: a technical
manual for terracotta jewellery, Part-II. This work has been produced in my technical guidance by Miss Ujwala Gujar
during her association with the District Rural Development Agency, Wardha. Under this phase many new innovative
experiments were conducted and very good impacts were recorded like improvement of terracotta jewellery kiln,
identification of clay sources for better strength and texture, recommendation of different suppliers for supply of tools and
raw materials for mix-media jewellery etc.
The work evolved in collaboration with Sant Goroba Kaka Self Help Group, Waifad Wardha under the guidance and
supervision of Ms Leena Bansod CEO ZP Wardha and Mr E R Mohan Project Director, DRDA, Wardha.
The jewellery produced by SHG shown excellent market response during different exhibitions at Wardha, Nagpur, Pune,
Mumbai and Jaipur. We encourage more groups as well as indusial to take up this occupation for their income generation
and cultural development of India.Best Wishes

The terracotta tradition is a proud heritage form ancient India. Clay when
baked is called terracotta.
This range of ethnic designer jwellary is entirely handcrafted and made by
skilled artisans experienced in the terracotta tradition. They are among the best in the
country. Each piece is a work of art created in this earthy medium in ethnic,
traditional, as well as contemporary design with the finest finish.
The clay is processed into a highly soft and pliable consistency by
repeated filtrations .Then, each bead or constituent of the piece is made in to the
shape or form required, entirely by hand . Their are then sun-dried before being
baked in a kiln at high temperatures. Each bead is then hand painted and strung into
the desired piece of jewellary.
HAND PAINTED TERRACOTTA JEWELLERY
After the development of successful business module of Jai Durga SHG at
Waigaon, DRDA Wardha decided to replicate the experiment at different potters colony.
The following problem identified in pervious experiment were solved very successfully
during this phase.
1.Identification of different clay sources for better strength and texture.
2.Identification of different suppliers for good quality with reasonable price tools and
accessories.
3.Based on the problems identified during baking of clay beads modification of kiln.

UP DRAUGHT KILN FOR BAKING OF BEADS
For baking of jewellery beads a small kiln was firstly developed by Rural Craft & Engg Section, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Rural Industrialization. The form of the kiln is rectangular, opened at top with an entrance tunnel for the fire provided at bottom. The floor on which the beads inside the wares are placed, is made perforated by bricks to let the fire pass. During baking the top Of the kiln is covered by broken pieces of wares or tiles.
In the previous design it was observed that the 25% beads were over baked. The firing space has been re-designed and it was found that the previous problem was fully solved. The size of different spaces as follows-1)firing space – 120 X 40 X 40 cm 2)fire mouth is 40 X 60 cm and 3)Loading platform 40 X 60 X 40 cm
A- advantages1. Better control of fire then traditional furnaces.2. Better circulation of hot gases and flues, resulting more uniformity in temperature.3. Better retention of heat due to walls.4. The top of kiln can even be covered during the firing to retain heat but allow the escape of
sufficient hot gases to create a draft.5. A temperature up to 900°c can be attained.b. Limitations1. air entry in these kiln is from fuel feed opening and is not symmetrical. which results in
insufficient mixing of air and also radiation loss from fuel feed opening is high.2. No control over fuel burning rate except varying the fuel feed, which is not a better way
than to control on air flow.3. No arrangement of damper to control excess air or exhaust losses.4. Skill is required in setting of wares , as more space is left in the area of cold spots so that
more hot gases may pass while the spots tending to overheat should stacked more densely.5. No arrangement of chimney to increase the firing temperature and to improve the direct for
combustion efficiency and so to reduce firing time.
