OFF-SITE CONSTRUCTION MANUFACTURER
TRANSFORMS INDUSTRY!!A prefab manufacturer ischanging the way woodframe structures arebuilt.
Build SMART claims to addvalue, cure chronic ailments ofthe construction industry, make buildings easily performbetter and go up much fasterwith unskilled labor.
MAKING SICK BUILDING SYNDROME OBSOLETE
Experts agree. There is anepidemic of moisture relatedfailures in newly constructedwood buildings. Mold growswhen moisture accumulates in
the dark recesses of leaky
exterior walls. All normallyconstructed buildings are eighttimes leakier than airtightBuild SMART walls. Buildingscience experts call them “theperfect wall.” They are veryquiet, more comfortable, energybills will be much lower, andoccupant health is protected.Air tightness, the experts say,is the first prerequisite forbetter indoor air quality.
Tim McDonald, of Onion FlatsArchitects and a design/builddeveloper has found theanswer in Build SMART for hismultifamily projects. As he
says, “With Build SMART,everybody is an expert!”
Build SMART: vendor of customprefab building enclosures.
The solutions are proven. Off-site construction and appliedbuilding science are the keysfor long-lasting performance, healthy indoor environments, accelerated construction and
high quality even with less
skilled labor.
LOWER COST, LABOR SAVINGS, AND SPEED ARE

Build SMART set out to
create the simplest way to
achieve healthy moisture
control and an airtight,
vapor-open building
envelope.
UV CONTROL
CONTRACTOR’S CLADDING AND TRIM.
WATER CONTROL
ZIP Board water resistive barrier (WRB) is the X-Wall exterior face. Rough openings
are flashed all around. Windows are pre-installed and air sealed with QAQC
oversight. Water is directed out of the rough opening and down the vented
drainage plane.
Exterior insulation (EPS, PIC, or rigid phenolic board) provides comfort without
thermal bridges and ensures that condensation won’t occur within the wood
frame. Vapor does not freeze and accumulate. Ice formation is prevented
because the assembly is so extremely airtight that cold winter wind does not
penetrate.
AIR AND VAPOR CONTROL
X-Wall is designed to “breathe” by vapor diffusion. X-Wall is designed for
engineered drying from the structural sheathing in each direction - to the interior
and to the exterior. Water vapor that enters the X-Wall assembly can escape and
not accumulate inside the wall.
THERMAL CONTROL
X-Wall continuous exterior insulation plus the Contractor’s stud cavity insulation
form the thermal control. Thicknesses are variable as appropriate for the project
climate, building geometries, and use patterns.
WATER, AIR, AND VAPOR CONTROL
Vapor barrier membrane is installed on J-Form and underslab insulation before the slab
is poured. It keeps the slab warm and dry (and keeps out soil gasses like radon).
THERMAL CONTROL
J-Form and underslab insulation is designed for permanent contact with the earth.
Thicknesses vary depending on climate zone.

Factory made “EL” Corners
Building corners are made in the factory for fast and true installation with no extra labor time and no thermal bridging
15
Factory made “Z” Corners
If you have double height wallsStructural Engineers may choose from at least two primary ways to
design double height Build SMART walls. X-Wall panels can be fabricated from 6’-0” to 10’-0” height, plate to plate.
“Stitch” panel edge studs together with construction screws to form a full height
horizontal load resistance.
PSL columns designed for Contractor jobsite installation between Build SMART panels.
Columns are then covered with Build SMART insulating nail base.

If designers choose other than Alpen

X-Wall assemblies with fully flashed
rough openings that are ready for
jobsite installation of any Contractor
window.
