New Java Plug-In Coming in Java version 6u10

Current (old!) plug-in has a lot of limitations• Has stability issues• Plug-in JRE runs in the web browser's address space

• Only one JRE version can be used at a time• No developer control over which version• No developer control over JVM™ args, memory settings, etc.• JRE crash kills entire browser• Browser freezes while JRE starts

New plug-in runs Out-Of-Process• Tiny stub runs inside browser• Applets themselves run in one or more separate JRE processes

• Choose JRE versions!• Specify JRE args!• Can't crash browser!

Applets using JNLP

We already have a convenient file format for specifying JRE versions, args, etc... it's called JNLPStarting in 6u10, you can use JNLP for both applets and Web Start• Re-use existing JNLP components• Give applets access to JNLP features like PersistenceService,

FileOpenService, etc.• Give JNLP components tight browser integration

By itself, the JavaScript API can only use “standard” mechanisms for detecting and installing Java.

Startup Terms

Cold Start• The JRE code is not currently in memory and must be read from

disk• Disks are orders of magnitude slower than memory and... well, the

JRE isn't small• This is where the perception of “the JRE takes too long to start”

comes fromWarm Start• The JRE code is currently in memory and merely needs to run its

initialization routines• This is surprisingly quick; around 0.1 sec on a modern machine

Cold start is basically disk read time + warm start


Cold Start vs. Warm Start

A lot of work has gone into both of these metrics over the last eleven years.On a typical modern desktop machine, warm starts are now nearly instant. There isn't much left to improve.Cold start continues to be an issue. No matter how much we optimize things, hard drives are still slow.


Solution: Java Quick StartComing in Java 6u10 Release

Background process which periodically reads from the JRE's files, causing them to be stored in the disk cache.While in the disk cache, all starts are warm starts, and therefore virtually instant.Doesn't “really” consume memory – if the OS needs more memory, it can simply throw the data away, rather than having to write it to the pagefile.


Limitations

It's not a universal fix. On memory-constrained computers Quick Start will automatically disable itself to avoid thrashing the system.

But, in most cases the Java startup time issue is effectively solved.

As more features are added to Java technology, its size has increased substantially. There is no end in sight.


Usage

The size of the JRE can be a significant turnoff for client-side use.Many APIs aren't frequently used:• RMI• SQL• XSLT• CORBA• etc.

It turns out most programs use less than half of the JRE's code.


Solution: Java Kernel

Modularized JRECore install (the “kernel”) contains:• The JVM itself and supporting libraries• The core classes needed to boot the JVM• The basic components of the Java Plug-In and Java Web Start• The most commonly-needed client-side code (AWT, etc.)• ...in other words, enough to run most simple applets

Required components are downloaded on demandRemaining components are downloaded in the backgroundFinal result is byte-for-byte identical to the offline JRE
