Where is Big Sky and Why Visit?
Big Sky is in southwestern Montana, situated almost exactly halfway between West Yellowstone and the larger city of Bozeman.
Interestingly, Big Sky is technically not an incorporated town, it's a "census-designated place."
While Big Sky is best known for its world-class skiing, it is truly a year-round destination and there is much more to do beyond
the slopes. Fishing – especially fly fishing – is a popular activity, as well as hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, rock
climbing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and golf. The town of Big Sky has a vibrant culture centered around farm-to-table
dining and craft beer, and Yellowstone National Park's northwestern border is just 15 miles away.
For those who primarily wish to experience "the biggest skiing in America," the ski season officially begins on Thanksgiving
and runs through mid-April, and Big Sky Resort sees an average of 400 inches of snowfall annually. There are over 5,850
acres of skiing in Big Sky, so there's terrain for absolutely everyone, from children taking their very first lessons to thrill seeking
veterans who have skied hundreds of times.
Whether you're seeking to spend time on the slopes or checking out nearby Bozeman, exploring nearby Yellowstone or Glacier
National Parks, or you simply want to recharge and escape daily stresses, Big Sky is an ideal vacation destination.

When is the Best Time to Visit?Since Big Sky has so much to offer year-round, there's never a bad time to visit. If you want to enjoy winter activities including
skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and even dog sledding, winter is the best time to go to Big Sky. The official
ski season begins on Thanksgiving and lasts through mid-April.
For those who want to experience Big Sky beyond the slopes, a summer or fall visit will afford the best opportunities for hiking,
biking, fishing, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, and golfing. There are also several concerts and festivals in Big Sky and
nearby Bozeman in the warmer months. Read on for some ideas:
YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
One of the biggest nearby attractions when you're staying in a Big Sky luxury
resort or vacation rental is Yellowstone, the world's first national park. The
park's western entrance is less than an hour away and offers endless sight-
seeing, recreation, and wildlife viewing opportunities year-round.
WATER ACTIVITIES
Depending on what time of year you're visiting Big Sky, there are a number
of ways to enjoy its many lakes and rivers. Try ice fishing in winter or spring,
fly-fish year-round, and go kayaking or whitewater rafting on the Gallatin
River in the summer and early fall.
ENJOY THE TRAILS
No matter what season you visit Big Sky, there are miles upon miles of trails
for everything from hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding to snow-
shoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling. Many Big Sky luxury home
rentals have trail access just outside their doors.
BOZEMAN
The home of Montana State University, Bozeman has a vibrant, welcoming feel and is about 45 minutes from Big Sky. Enjoy
the renowned Montana outdoor lifestyle, plus local microbreweries, the Museum of the Rockies, the historic natural Bozeman
Hot Springs, and much more.
GET A BIRDS' EYE VIEW
Big Sky has several scenic chair lifts that operate year-round, plus the Lone Peak Tram, which takes you all the way up to Big
Sky's highest point, the 11,166-foot summit of Lone Peak. There are 360-degree views and on a clear day, you can see
Wyoming's Grand Tetons, plus countless other ranges.
