IntroductionDestiny io2 technologyThankyou for choosing the Destiny io2 digital pen. Digital pens are faster, more fl exible and more energy-effi cient than other more expensive, complicated technologies. Unlike computers which can create a barrier and slow things down, users can concentrate on what they’re meant to be doing, rather than keying in data. They’re discreet and portable – so personal security is enhanced.

Equally, data security is assured via rapid, accurate capture and verifi cation, transmission encryption facilities, intelligent routing, and secure servers with guaranteed uptime. They’re ideal for anyone on the move – from engineers and surveyors to nurses and sales people. And they can work for any application – from deliveries and questionnaires to inspections, repairs, audits, visit reports and note taking.

Bluetooth wireless technology is the global short-range wireless standard for personal connectivity across a broad range of electronic devices. The technology continues to develop, building on its small-form factor radio, low power, low cost, built-in security, robustness, ease-of-use, and ad hoc networking abilities. As members of the Bluetooth Signature Group, Destiny Wireless PLC is committed to supporting the development of the technology through the development of the io2 digital pen.

Connecting and charging the digital pen

You must charge the digital pen before using it for the fi rst time. Battery charging takes up to two hours.

In order for the digital pen to charge, the USB cradle must be plugged into a USB port on your computer and your computer must be running. The digital pen draws the power it needs from the computer through the USB port. Alternatively, the digital pen can be charged using a wall or car charging adaptor, which connects to the USB cradle. (For more information, see Recharging the digital pen)

1 Turn on your computer.

2 Place the USB cradle on a fl at surface.

3 Connect the cradle’s USB connector to the computer’s USB port.

4 Remove the pen cap. The battery and memory/Bluetooth status LEDs fl ash red, yellow, and then green. The digital pen will vibrate once to indicate it is on. The memory/Bluetooth status LED will fl ash blue to indicate the pen is in Bluetooth discoverable mode. The discoverable mode (with cap off) lasts for two minutes.

5 Insert the digital pen into the USB cradle nib down, with the contacts on the pen aligned with the contacts on the cradle. The Microsoft Windows operating system will detect the new hardware and a dialog box will launch asking if you would like to load the appropriate drivers.

7 Charge the digital pen. While the digital pen is charging, the battery status LED will slowly fl ash either red, yellow, or green depending upon the power level of the battery. It will turn solid green when the digital pen is charged. After the digital pen has been fully charged, remove it from the USB cradle. Charging the digital pen continuously when the digital pen is fully charged may ‘age’ the battery unnecessarily.

Caution: You should only charge the battery in temperatures between 41F° – 104°F (5C° – 40°C). Never place the digital pen in temperatures that exceed 140°F (60°C).

Turning the digital pen on and off

You can switch ON the pen by• Removing the cap from the pen• Docking the pen in its USB cradle when the cradle is attached to a powered USB port• Docking the pen in its USB cradle when the cradle is attached to a charging adapter

Recharging the digital pen

You can use the digital pen for up to 25 pages before the battery needs recharging. When the battery status LED turns red, the digital pen battery is low, and when this LED flashes red, the digital pen is about to run out of battery power.

Recharge the digital pen immediately by removing the cap and inserting the digital pen into the USB cradle. Connect the USB cradle to the computer. (See Connecting and charging the digital pen for more information)

Alternatively, the digital pen can be charged using a wall or car charging adapter, which connects to the USB cradle. A suitable wall socket charger is provided in the Destiny digital pen with Bluetooth package. These accessories are also available from www.destinyplcshop.com.

While the digital pen is charging, the battery status LED will slowly flash either red, yellow, or green depending upon the power level of the battery. If the battery is completely empty, it may take up to ten minutes before the LED flashes to indicate that the digital pen is charging. Refer to the table below for more information about the battery, memory, and Bluetooth status LED:

Color of LED Battery level

Green Battery has full charge. Stop charging the digital pen.

Yellow Battery is less than 50% charged.

Red Battery is low. Recharge now.

Blinking red Battery level is critically low. You must recharge now.

1 Remove the cap from the digital pen.

2 Place the ink cartridge tip in the hole in the pen’s cap clip (A)

3 Tilt the pen cap slightly clockwise (A). Pull the cap away from the pen. The ink cartridge should pull away with the cap (B). Remove the cartridge completely from the pen and discard it.

4 Insert a new ink cartridge into the digital pen.

5 Press the ink cartridge tip against the surface of the digital notebook to secure it in place (C).

If you need to purchase additional ink cartridges please visit www.destinyplcshop.com

The ink colour and type is important for the functioning of the destiny io2 digital pen. If you purchase ink cartridge refills from another manufacturer, make sure the refills are ISO 12757-1 D1 compliant and use blue or black ink.

Replacing the ink cartridge

When the ink cartridge in the digital pen runs out, replace it with one of the refills supplied with your digital pen.

Only replace the ink cartridge when it is empty. The process of removing the cartridge can damage the cartridge tip. If you attempt to reuse a cartridge with a damaged tip, it may leak ink.

g Bluetooth pairing

Pairing can be enabled or disabled by setting the pen’s discoverable mode in the Bluetooth digital pen configuration utility. This is specific to the digital pen solution and you should refer to your application guide.

In order to pair your digital pen with your mobile device, you will need to open the Bluetooth menu on your mobile device and complete the pairing from there. Please note you will need to know your pen’s Bluetooth pass key (pairing code) which can be found on the pen’s packaging. For specific examples of how to pair your pen with various compatible mobile devices, please visit the support area on our website: www.destinyplc.com

Initiating pairing from the digital pen occurs when you ‘tick’ the Anoto pairing pidget box. There are different pairing boxes for PCs and mobile devices.

The digital pen can also respond to a pairing request from a Bluetooth enabled device. The pairing respond state starts when the cap is removed. During this state, the digital pen is in discoverable, connectable and pairable mode. Once started, the digital pen will remain in this state for a limited time of two minutes. When the handset establishes a Bluetooth connection with the pen it will ask for a pass key to enable the pairing. This is the 4-digit BT pass key that can be found on your pen’s packaging. Enter this code using your handset’s key pad. Once complete the pen will vibrate 3 times to indicate successful pairing.

Multiple-device pairing

The digital pen can be paired with one mobile device and one PC at the same time. If the pen is successfully paired with a PC, any previous pairing with a PC is removed. In the same way, if the pen is successfully paired with a mobile device, any previous mobile device pairing will be removed.

Bluetooth® passkey

A Bluetooth passkey is used when you need to pair the digital pen with another device (eg a mobile phone, PDA or PC). A four-digit passkey is provided on the Destiny pen identification card that comes with your Destiny io2 digital pen with Bluetooth.

Customised passkey

The Bluetooth passkey can be customised using the Bluetooth digital pen configuration utility, available from Destiny.

Glossary

Bluetooth – a specification for the use of low-power radio communications to wirelessly link phones, computers and other network devices over short distances (up to approx 3 metres).

Bluetooth pairing – happens when two Bluetooth enabled devices are configured to communicate with one another. When this happens, the two devices join what is called a trusted pair. When one device recognises another device in an established trusted pair, each device automatically accepts communication.

GPRS – General Packet Radio Services (GPRS) is a packet-based wireless communication service that promises data rates from 56 up to 114 Kbps and continuous connection to the Internet for mobile phone users.

Pen ID – This is the number on the pen’s packaging which determines its identity. This ID is in the following format: ATD-AAE-BKM-NC

Pairing code – the 4 digit code which enables the digital pen to be paired with a Destiny compatible mobile device.

Pidget – an Anoto enabled tick box which triggers a response once scored through/ticked by a digital pen.

Router – a piece of software that connects two networks - frequently over large distances. It accepts packets on at least two network interfaces and forwards packets from one interface to another. We have built our own specific routers designed to be installed on to specific devices in order to transfer handwritten notes from a digital pen to the end user.
