The key feature of the products manufactured from Detectamet detectable polymer is that fragments are detected and rejected by standard in-process metal detection and x-ray equipment. All our products are independently tested and meet current EU legislation along with other international requirements for food contact use.

Visual recognition is also an important feature of the Detectamet range, not just for identification in food product but also for segregation within the factory environment. Detectamet offer the largest range of hygiene colours currently available on the market. This allows customers to incorporate Black, Blue, Red, Green, Yellow, White, Violet and Orange into the hygiene control procedures.

How detectable are we? Detectamet products are made from various materials, those that offer the best capabilities for food applications that cannot always use a metal alternative. All products in the Detectamet range are detectable either by metal detection and x-ray systems, or are visually detectable.

Detectamet products are made with a proportion of a metallic magnetic trace element which is present in most cases throughout the whole object, this is at a size and concentration that allows a homogeneous flow throughout, ensuring that all parts are potentially detectable by metal detection systems without changing the physical properties of the object. Other products may have a metallic strip etc bound to the product or similar.

X-Ray machines have an advantage over metal detectors in being able to detect a wider range of foreign bodies - this is because theforeign body must be significantly different from the food or other material in X-Ray density in order to be detected.In practice an X-Ray machine will be able to detect items such as glass, metal, stones, bone and some denser plastics, for examplePVC.

Detectamet X-Ray visible plastic has been developed to work in conjunction with metal detection and x-ray detectionsystems, using an x-ray visible trace element which is present throughout the whole object and increases its density, allowing detection of foreign body contamination to the end of the production line.

Detectamet products are all detectable - but there will be a cut off point. This will not be systematic for all customers and indeed forall machines/lines or sites.

There is no 100% guarantee of zero risk with any detectable products.

Have you ever considered why small pieces of metal are able to get into production lines?There will always be a limit as to at what point the Detectamet material (or any detectable material) will stop being detected! If usingan X-ray machine, the density of the product you are manufacturing must be less than the foreign object matter.

Who Needs Products?

Within many industries today, including food, pet food, beverage, pharmaceutical, cosmetics, textile and many more, there is an ever present risk of product contamination from foreign objects. Statistics show that food, beverage and pharmaceutical industries are most at risk from foreign body contamination issues.

If these remain undetected, they can result in damage to equipment, costs incurred through product recalls, harm to the company’s reputation and in the worst case, serious injury to consumers inadvertently coming into contact with the contaminant.

An aid to preventing foreign body contamination is through the use of HACCP and incorporating detectable products into your procedures.

HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) was developed by NASA in the 1960’s to prevent food poisoning during manned space missions. It has been used by food manufacturers since the 1970’s, initially starting in the canning process industry.

Article 5 of EC Regulation 852/2004 requires all food business operators to have in place a permanent, documented procedure based on the principles of HACCP. Food business that do not operate HACCP based Food Safety Management Systems are not compliant with EC 852/2004

On 1 January 2006 it became a legal requirement for all food businesses with the exception of primary producers, to establish, implement and maintain manufacturing procedures based on HACCP principles.

The law allows defences for all reasonable precautions and all due diligence when a company may be faced with a prosecution for a foreign body complaint.

HACCP has been incorporated into WHO Code of Practice for safe food (Codex Alimentarius) and it is used the in food industry worldwide as a robust system to manage food safety.

Detectamet Products can help implement new procedures to use alongside HACCP. Offering protection against and often eliminating physical contamination which may come from sources such as the physical environment, equipment, staff, cleaning materials and many more.

Detectamet products, equipment and materials are suitable for packaging and food contact. Our products meet the requirements of the acts, regulations and orders applicable in Europe and the United Kingdom relating to goods supplied including, but not necessarily limited to, the following:• 1935/2004 - Materials and Articles Intended to Come into Contact with Food, and all subsequent amendments (and

Detectable Professional Knife Handles

On the vast majority of the knives included in the Detectamet range, three handle types are available. The Regular Handle - standard, polypropylene metal detectable handle, originally designed for holding the knife safely and comfortably for long periods.

The Ergo handle - polypropylene metal detectable handle, developed for the professional user who uses knives all day, our research and development team worked with various food processing companies to develop this innovative handle, the resulting design provides the following benefits-• Double tapered design, ergonomically designed to reduce stress to hand and wrist• Contoured thumb platform and rounded blade back for added comfort

The Ergo Safety Handle - polypropylene metal detectable handle, this is a hybrid version of the Ergo described above, but it has a much longer finger guard to protect the fingers and reduce the chance of injury.

All handles are insert moulded from metal detectable polypropylene co-polymer.Test to assess compliance with the current EC food legislation (EN) 1935/2004 on materials and articles intended to come into contact with food and repealing directives. All products come with a certificate of conformity. Migration test reports available on request. We recommend that a coding system is used for all Professional Knives in the range to prevent cross-contamination, tainting of food and to seperate production lines in the food industry.

To complement the traditional range of Plain Edge knives, we have introduced the Wavy or Scalloped Cutting Edge. This provides 40% more cutting edge in contact with the product than with a traditional plain edge knife.

Made to the same exacting standards, the Wavy Edge provides the perfect cutting edge profile for cutting items such as bread, gateaux and pastry products. The edge requires no sharpening, so is ideal for fast food outlets, busy canteens and restaurants.

The series of small scallops that make up the blade Edge are ground alternately on each side of the blade by hand with great precision. This ensures that each knife performs perfectly for the longest possible time by retaining a fine, razor sharp cutting edge for far longer than a traditional plain edge knife. The scallops also provide an additional benefit in that air is allowed to enter between the blade and the cut product, enabling the cut slice to fall away from the knife and not stick to it.

The blade Edge is available on any knife, but most popular on the Ham, Beef and Salmon slicer knives.

Detectable Palette KnivesPalette Knives which are manufactured in the traditional way come with fully detectable handles.The test when choosing a Palette Knife is to press the blade onto a firm surface. It should bend from the middle of the blade, not near the handle. Keep pushing the blade so it is at 90 degrees to the handle. All Test Pieces are supplied with a full certificate of conformity which we will keep a record of for you for 3 years.

Each Test Piece has a number etched onto its side which relates back to the Certificate of Conformity supplied by the bearing manufacturer. When our Testpieces are purchased from Detectamet our name will also be etched onto the Test Piece - allowing you or any member of staff to trace it back to us. Alternitavley we can add your company name upon request.

We can also etch extra numbers on to the Test pieces if required - to allow for individual identification purposes such as shift workers or issue numbers etc.

From food processing and brewing, through distribution and storage to serving food, installing Detectamet stainless steel equipment brings unique benefits to the food and pharmaceutical industry.

One of the great advantages of the Detectamet stainless steel range is that it imparts no taste to the food/products that is prepared on it. Typical uses include kitchens, dairies, ham curing and fish storage. The grades used by Detectamet are 304, for ambient temperatures and low acid concentrations, and 316 for harsher environments. For example 304 is used in cheese and dairy production, but where salted (ham) products is being prepared 316 is used. In ice cream production /processing 316 is specified because strong anti-bacteriological cleaning and rinsing systems are used. A further advantage is that stainless steel is resistant to damage caused by condensation cycles in high humidity areas such as kitchens etc. The Detectamet range also incorporates the use of other suitable metals for food applications such as aluminium and brass. Declarations of conformity are available on request.
