● What is Roundness?
● Purpose of roundness measurement
In general, ROUNDNESS is used for describing the error margin by the size of error, when things described “ROUND” or “CIRCLE” is compared to ideal circle (geometrical accurate circle).
When the error margin is evaluated in micro or nano, it is found that it is not ideal circle, though it looks like circle when squarely cutting edge of cylindrical profile in axial direction becomes a circle.
The distortions when chucking the workpiece on processing machines and its center profile have an affect on finishing workpiece in true circle, even though the performance of the processing machine has improved recently.
It is confirmed whether the workpiece was processed according to the designed value only after the measurement by Roundness measuring instruments.
The level of Roundness has the meaning for functions and quality of workpiece, therefore the quality control is necessary.
Roundness Measurement
● Basic structure of Table Rotating Type Roundness/Cylindricity Measuring Instruments
There are 2 types of basic structure for The Roundness Measuring Instruments, which are Table Rotating Type and Detector Rotating Type.
The Detector Rotating type has the detector on rotating tracing driver placed in the upper part of the instruments and the measurement is done by putting workpiece on the XY table. The workpiece is positioned in the center where the detector rotates on XY table.
Moreover, the straightness accuracy for slide axis (Z axis column) in the vertical direction and straightness accuracy for the column of XY direction of the table is important with the rotation accuracy of table. It is necessary to consider the straightness accuracy of XY direction column of the table when the evaluation of the parallelism is necessary for the selection of measuring instruments.
The Table Rotating type is suitable for the small and light workpiece such as the motor
shaft used for electric drill. It measures the workpiece by putting it on the table.

workpiece, simply playback the procedure stored in the
operation log.
Operation log data also can be saved to a file as part
programs. Command input correction of value inputs for
looping, branching, jumping, movement distance, and other
value inputs is supported.
When making inquiries, operation log data can be attached to
the e-mail, which will shorten the time required to identify
problems and allow feedback of accurate information.
