ISO 18184: Determination of antiviral activity of textile products

ISO 18184 is an antiviral textile test that measures virucidal antimicrobial activity on textiles and other porous materi-als against specific viruses. The increasing necessity for health protective products against epidemic deseases has led to the development of textile products with antiviral properties. Antiviral textile products are textiles capable of reducing the number virus particles taht might come in contact with the surface or the textile. By applying finish-ing on fabric or finished textile products, manufacturers can achieve antiviral property on the goods to offer extra protection to wearers, particularly for wearers in high risks environment and workplaces. Scientific evidence must be available and chemical data must be submitted in support of the public health labeling claims and patterns of use of the product.

Standard virus exposure times range from 2 hours to less than 24 hours. Different viruses may have inherent sensi-tivity to the underlying material, so a control material is also included to determine the antiviral effects of the treated textile over any inherent antiviral performance of the test substance. Due to the individual sensitivities, in terms of they are affected by products incorporated into textile products, the results of one test virus might not be applicable for other viruses.

Eurofins BioPharma Product Testing Italy performs antiviral activity testing of on textiles and other porous materials following ISO 18184 . These test data can then be used as scienfic evidence to report the specific antiviral activity of a product that can be labeled as having been tested according to ISO 18184.

We can quantify the antiviral activity of different kinds of textile products such as woven and knitted fabrics, fibres, yarns, braids and other porous materials.
