The red, green, yellow, and blue keyson your BOOKMAN change functionsaccording to which book is selected.When the built-in book is selected, thecolour keys function as labelled onthe BOOKMAN keyboard. When abook card is selected, the colour keysfunction as labelled on that book card.

When the language or languages inyour book card are different fromthose in your built-in book, the key ref-erences may also be different. Pleaserefer to the grid below for help indetermining a particular key’s function.

Selecting a Book

➤ Removing Book CardsWarning: Never install or remove abook card while your product is on. Anyinformation that was entered in the built-in book or book card will be erased.

➤ Book Card TroubleshootingIf your book card is performing errat-ically, follow the reset instructions foryour platform. If this does not fix theproblem, remove the book card andthen remove the white rubber striplocated between the two metal pins.Clean the rubber strip with your fin-gers and then replace it making sureit is completely in its notch.

➤ About Screen IllustrationsSome screen illustrations in thisUser’s Guide may differ slightly fromwhat you see on screen. This doesnot mean that your product is mal-functioning. The examples in theEnglish half of this manual useEnglish as the message language.

Message LanguageWhen you turn on this product for thefirst time, you must choose the mes-sage language. Press a for Germanor press b for English.

The message language is the lan-guage of prompts, help, and othermessages. You can change the mes-sage language after your initial deci-sion. See “Changing the Settings” onpage 39 to learn how.

Entry LanguageThe entry language is the language inwhich you enter words at the WordEntry screen. This determines which dic-tionary you will use, German or English.1. Press MENÜ.2. Use the direction keys to highlight ,

and then press EINGABE to access theGerman-to-English dictionary.Select at the icon menu to go tothe English-to-German dictionary.Or you can press E/D at the WordEntry screen to switch betweenGerman and English.

➤ Misspelling WordsIf you enter a misspelled word, alist of corrections appears.Highlight the word you want andthen press EINGABE to see itsdictionary entry.

➤ Understanding DefinitionsDictionary entries consist of head-words, pronunciation, parts ofspeech, and/or definitions. Otherforms of the word may follow theheadword. Capitalized words indi-cate the category for which the wordis used. After the definition, you maysee a list of usage examples.1. Type kennen.2. Press EINGABE.

➤ Explanation of GendersGerman nouns are different thanEnglish nouns in that they must eitherbe masculine, feminine, or neuter.Each definition of a noun indicateswhich gender it is with m, f, or n.

language from German toEnglish, if needed.

Finding Letters inWords

If you are uncertain about how to spella word, type a question mark (?) inplace of each unknown letter. To findprefixes, suffixes, and other parts ofwords, type an asterisk (✽ ) in a word.Each asterisk stands for a series ofletters. Note: If you type an asterisk atthe beginning of a word, it may take alittle while to find the matching words.1. Press E/D to switch to the

German Word Entry screen, ifneeded.

2. Type a word with ?s and ✽ s.

To type an asterisk, hold downand press .

3. Press EINGABE.

4. Press to move the highlightto the word you want and pressEINGABE to view its definition.

5. Press CLEAR when done.

➤ Choosing Multiple FormsSome words in this dictionaryhave more than one form (e.g.resume, résumé). When the wordyou are looking up has multipleforms, the different forms appearin a list.Simply highlight the form you wantand press EINGABE to see itsdictionary entry. For example,enter resume at the Word Entryscreen.

Highlighting Words

Another way to look up words is byhighlighting them in dictionary entriesor word lists. You can then find theirdefinitions, phrases, pronunciation oradd them to My Word List.1. At any text, press EINGABE to

start the highlight.

Conjugations show inflections, orchanges in a word’s gender, tense,etc. This dictionary includes extensiveinflections of nouns, verb, modifiersand other words.

If needed, highlight the part ofspeech or translation you wantand press EINGABE.These are the principal forms ofthe German verb “denken”. TheEnglish translations are beloweach German inflection.

From a Dictionary EntrySome words have different parts ofspeech or multiple translations. You caneasily find which part of speech or specif-ic translation you will need to conjugateby first looking up the word and thenpressing BEUG. Follow this example.

Tic Tac ToeTic Tac Toe challenges you to getthree x’s in a row before your oppo-nent gets three o’s in a row. You canplay alone or with a friend. The gamebegins with the x in the center of thegrid. Use the arrow keys to moveyour letter to the position you wantand the press EINGABE. The firstplayer to get three game letters in arow, wins.

Transferring WordsBetween Books

This unit may change operating modesdue to Electrostatic Discharge. Normaloperation of this unit can be re-estab-lished by pressing the reset key, ,or by removing/replacing batteries.

This BOOKMAN book card can trans-fer words with certain other BOOK-MAN books. To send a word to anoth-er book, you must first install thisbook card in a BOOKMAN book thatcan receive words in the selected lan-guage. To learn if a book can send orreceive words, read its User’s Guide.

1. Highlight a word in this dictionary.To highlight a word in a dictionary entry,press EINGABE to start the highlightand use the arrow keys to move thehighlight to the word you want.
