-----ROAD TRIP-------- Thursday April 13 (7:30 P.M.) $20 ROAD HOUSE SERIES….Memphis Soul Meets Chicago Blues. A Tribute to Stax and Chess Records. Featuring the artistry of Chuck Berry.

The evening will be dedicated to the late-great Father of Rock 'n' Roll, Chuck Berry. There will be a special musical tribute to the rock 'n' roll icon as a highlight of the show.

When the icons of Sun Records in Memphis left the label bound for major national success, the authentic and inventive feel of the rock 'n' roll movement went across town in Memphis to Stax records and studios where neighborhood artists would find a home. They included Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, and rock's first fully integrated band, Booker T and the M.Gs. Meanwhile, throughout the 50s and into the 60s, Chicago's Chess Records became home to Sun Records discovery, Howlin' Wolf. Muddy Waters, Etta James and Chuck Berry were creating records that would soon influence the likes of The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, Cream, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. Chess was the cradle of not, only Chicago blues, but of the next step in rock 'n' roll that would forever change the sound during the turbulent 60s. Join us for an evening celebrating the great music that came from this near forgotten era of rock 'n' roll. Some of California's finest Americana and roots artists will be joining us. They include the Roadhouse's artist-in-residence and host, Patrick Carrico, Nick Berk, Aireene Espiritu, Coyote Moon, Duane Thorin, Levi Petri, Pam Loe, Chad Watson, Ed Tree, Neil Rosengarden and Debra Dobkin Reservations: (626) 798-6236 between 10 A. Rea Nagel – Mixed Media Artist

As a native of very flat Illinois, my fascination

with mountains and the ocean grows daily since

I moved to California many years ago. Since

Southern California has a growing season that

is 12 months long, the variety of flowers and

plants I can paint is endless.

Many of my paintings are watercolor, but I also

mix the use of acrylics, inks, collage, and

pastels. Most of my paintings are a combination

of all these media. whatever gets my vision

across to the viewer

I love to draw and have many, many sketch

books filled with the things I have seen from the

passenger seat of the car. I usually use my

sketches as the basis of a painting. I enjoy

blending colors and believe that nothing is a

solid tube color and mix my colors on the paper

to get the wanted results. Most of my paintings

have several versions of the same scene done

until I decide on the composition. To me

composition and values are the what makes a

painting worth looking at.

I am involved with many art club and Topanga

Canyon Gallery being involved in multiple art

shows at a time.

After retiring from many years of teaching in

Burbank, I missed the contact with students and

began teaching part time at an adult school in a

community centers and Beverly Hills Adult

School. I was teaching at Viva Gallery until it

closed and now I teach at Carter Sexton Art

Sunday, April 23 (3:00 -5:00pm) $10/$5 GO Jazz Big Band Presents: Basie, the Beatles & Beyond

When local educator Brian Leff took over the GO Jazz Big Band, he gave it a unique, three-part identifier. For their spring concert this year, the band takes its slogan literally as the GO Jazz Big Band presents: Basie, the Beatles, & Beyond.

The band invites you to swing hard through Basie favorites like Blues in Hoss’ Flat and Fancy Pants, revel in the great melodies of Beatles hits like Norwegian Wood and Can’t Buy Me Love, and explore the mysterious outer

limits of Beyond. But just what is Beyond? According to Leff, it ranges from Bobby Darin to Bjӧrk, with side trips to wild Celtic dance and a severe phobia of rotary

telephones. The GO Jazz Big Band is a Santa Clarita Valley treasure featuring some of the best musicians in Southern California. This is a hard-charging ensemble in the tradition of the Buddy Rich Band and the Tonight Show Orchestra that also keeps an eye toward the exciting future of Big Band music. Terrific soloists, a great rhythm section, blazing horns, and vocalist Steve Lively all combine to make this a truly special event. Kelly Zirbe is a fantastic vocalist and her band is called Kelly's Lot. Their new CD Bittersweet opens with "About Her," which begins with percussion, and there is a brief moment at the beginning that makes one think of Los Lobos' "Kiko And the Lavender Moon." It's a cool tune, with an interesting vibe, and it
