Let me congratulate you on taking this important first step towards the international career of your choice. Meggan Jarvis and Gabija (Gabi) Kajenaite, students Hear from successful students who will detail their own experiences, and how international experience enhanced their employability and personal development. Meggan: I am a final year undergraduate at the University of Birmingham, studying a BA in American & Canadian Studies and Linguistics. I completed a year abroad studying at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada, where I also worked on the launch of a digital startup. Gabi: I am a final year International Business with Communications student. Last year I have been in Italy on my year abroad. Without a doubt it has been one of the most amazing experiences of my life as I got to meet people from different cultures and it allowed me to see many things from a different perspective.

‘H-J’ Colston, Chopsticks Club - Networking: a recipe for global success ‘H-J’ Colston is a Founder Member and Joint CEO of Chopsticks Club, the UK’s unique China-UK professionals’ network and gateway. H-J was confronted with her own cultural illiteracy when she first visited China in 1985. This inspired a passion to study Chinese at University in order to understand the nature of China and how the Chinese think. Her subsequent working commitment to the building of bi-lateral relations through personal contacts has resulted in her building a cross-cultural network and being at the forefront of the China-UK space for over 20 years.

Workshops All students are encouraged to join the workshops running from at 1.30 and 2.30pm. Each session will be filled on a ‘first come, first served’ basis.

Visas for Working in the UK, 1.30 – 2.30pm

These sessions aim to provide international students with an insight into key visa programmes and opportunities.

The workshops run by the International Student Internship Scheme, Access Tier 5 and BUNAC will give you information on opportunities available under the UK Government’s Tier 5 Government Authorised Exchange programme.

The workshop run by Freeths LLP Solicitors will provide an insight into the range of government programmes allowing students and graduates to work in the UK.

These workshops will be run by experienced careers advisers from universities across the Midlands and each will follow a similar format. Use the workshops to explore the follow questions:

International Student Internship Scheme International Student Internship Scheme (ISIS) was endorsed by BIS and UKTI, with subsequent approval by UKVI (UK Visa and Immigration) Home Office, to act as the overarching body for a Tier 5 GAE (Government Authorised Exchange) Visa scheme focused on developing bilateral trade and relations between China and the UK.

Directions The Conference will be held at:

The University of Birmingham The Great Hall Aston Webb Building Edgbaston Birmingham B15 2TT Parking is free at weekends. The best car park is the North car park (on the Edgbaston campus map).

Getting to Birmingham Many institutions are running a coach service to the event. Please contact your institution (above) to confirm this.

Train: The University of Birmingham has its own train station ‘University’, which is situated just a few minutes’ walk from the Great Hall. If you travel into Birmingham New Street Station, please change trains, and board a train in the direction of Longbridge or Redditch, University station is just 2 stops, approximately a 5-7 minute journey.

Taxi: Alternatively a taxi from Birmingham New Street station will bring you directly onto campus. It’s approximately 3 miles and £6-£10, a journey time of 15-20 minutes depending on traffic. You are able to pick up a taxi from directly outside the station.
