Developing Curriculum at CCC

Suppose that you decide to propose academic change.

This can be ■ modification of an existing course■ modification of an existing program■ design of a new course■ design of a new program

You are the Principal Advocate for the proposed academic change. Be prepared that the steps of approval may take up to an entire year!

The process of academic change is slow: it is designed to ensure that academic changes are faculty-driven, collaborative, and meaningful.

Preliminary Steps

For a course: ■ develop a course syllabus■ start PAC (Proposed Academic Change) form (available at the CCC website)

For a program: ■ develop a program description■ start a PAC form for the program■ If the proposed program is to include NEW courses, each course will have to be approved separately (see above)

Email these document to Vice President Rahman ([email protected]) and Dean Bailes ([email protected])

Step 1 – Departmental Approval

Present your PAC to your department during a meeting and request a vote on its approval.

Record the presentation and the outcome of the vote in your department’s minutes, and attach a copy of the minutes recording the vote to the PAC form.

Step 2 – Other Departments

Secure approval from a majority of the same departments across the District. Signatures or emails from chairs indicating departmental approval will be accepted. Ask other chairs to sign the form, or attach copies of emails to the PAC form.

Step 3 – Local Curriculum Committee

Check that you have everything ready for the Local Curriculum Committee. Use the “Local Curriculum Committee Checklist” form. Contact chair of Curriculum Committee Marta Hidegkuti ([email protected]), to present your PAC to our local committee.

This committee meets on the first Tuesday of each month.

Step 4 – Local Faculty Council

Contact Faculty Council President Joy Walker ([email protected]) to be put on the agenda at the next meeting.

This committee meets on the second Tuesday of each month.

Step 5 – College President Approval

Contact President Regan Romali ([email protected]) to schedule a meeting to secure her approval.

Step 6 – District Curriculum Committee

Contact the secretary, Julius Nadas ([email protected]), to submit your materials and request a spot on the agenda at their next meeting.

This committee meets on the third Wednesday of each month.

Step 7 – Faculty Council of the City Colleges of Chicago (FCCCC)

Contact Christine Aguila, the president of FC4, at [email protected] to request to present your PAC at the next FC4 meeting.

This committee meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

Step 8 – Vice Presidents of the City Colleges of Chicago

Contact Pervez Rahman ([email protected]) to ask when the Vice Presidents will meet and to request being added to the agenda.This group meets on the fourth Wednesday of each month.

District Office will notify you whether your PAC has been approved.

Step 9 – IAI Submission

If your PAC will be a transfer course, it must be submitted to for IAI approval. Forward your PAC (including the form and all supporting documentation) to the Dean of Instruction by by February 15 or by September 15.
