A Note From The Authors…Aschildrenenterschoolasfiveyearoldstheycontinuetomakethestepsthatmovethemfrom conversations to literate language. This can be a daunting step for all involved but “DevelopingNewsTellingandNarrativeSkills”isdesignedtomakethejourneyeasier.Thestrategies used in this book are linked to later developing narrative skills, just as pre-literacy skills are the foundation skills for spelling and reading development. It is critical that teachers and parents assist children in the development of language and narrative skills as they are a crucial component and predictor of later interpretative reading and writing success.

“DevelopingNews Telling andNarrative Skills” attempts to break down news and earlynarrative skills into simple sequential steps for teachers and parents to follow with children. The program trains parents and teachers to identify where children need to develop and strengthentheirskillsandpresentsspecifictechniquesandsupportstodoso.Theprogramprovides simple activities and visual cues that are designed to be incorporated into classroom and home environments utilising activities that occur every day.

The program provides: •assessmentandmonitoringprocedures •planningandprogrammingsupports • visualsupportsandactivityideas • techniquesandstrategiestodevelopandacceleratelanguageskills.

Newstellingisachallengeforstudentsandteachers, however, practiceisthekeyandthemore students are exposed to the language associated with telling news the more their expressive language will improve.

Model the activity the students are to complete us-ing the language expected in their retells and pointing to the relevant cues. 42 DevelopingNewsTellingandNarrativeSkills(5YearOlds) PLD Organisation Pty. Ltd. Three Step Activity Retells

Post-Test - 5 Year Old Three Step Activity RetellsIn retelling tasks, speakers independently organize and maintain extended discourse. It is essential that when collecting a retelling sample for testing purposes that no prompting, prior modelling or assistance is provided to the student. Aim to collect a sample that is representative of the student’s independent level of functioning. When testing students it is suggested that the same activity is used for all students and digital recordings are made.
