BASIC TENETS OF THE PROGRAMME:
•Community mobilisation
•Community Empowerment
•Community Participation
•Family Support
Community mobilisation
Aims at empowering the poor and disadvantaged communities by building community based organisation on the principles of self-help. A sangha of 10-15 members is established with one adult member from each of the poor families. The Sangha meets once every week on a fixed day. Each member will save a fixed amount in the sangha that will later be used for a self-lending. Sanghas will later get federated in to second tier.
Community Empowerment
This will be followed by exposure and training to understand the basics of sustainable participatory livelihood promotion for the member families. Sanghas will thus become the planning, implementing and the monitoring bodies for all the interventions at family level, be they livelihood programmes or quality of life programmes.
Community Participation
After the sangha understands several livelihood options available, a family level microplan (MLP) will be developed for each family. This microplan will be based on the resources available with the family, their earlier experiences if any, feasibility of the chosen option in the village or the area, and existing and likely competition.
Family Support
The MLP will be implemented with the help of development assistance to each of the family to start the chosen activity. The assistance will be provided through the sangha in kind and the sangha can decide the amount to be repaid and the installments. This will become the common fund of the sangha that will be used later for sustainability of the programme.
