Throughout my first two terms at Brisbane Water Secondary College Umina Campus, I have been inspired by the wonderful opportunities available to our students and the enriched teaching and learning happening both within and outside the classroom. Since the last newsletter, an outstanding array of school events have occurred with many recognised in this newsletter. One major event was the Year 12 graduation from the Senior Campus with their presentation being held on the Senior Campus on the 17th September. This marks the end of 13 years of schooling and for many the transition to the work place. We wish all our college students the very best with their post school destinations and look forward to hearing of their successes in the future. I would also like to recognise our fantastic SASS (office and other support staff) led by Viv Corcoran, who have been working tirelessly to get the school ready for the end of the year and 2014. Their hard work has been recognised in SAS Staff Recognition Week and I‘d like to acknowledge that without their tireless hard work and enthusiasm the school would certainly not function as effectively (if at all) as it does. Thank you all. While there are many changes proposed for 2014, one that will have the most impact on teaching and learn-ing is the new Australian Curriculum which will be implemented in Years 7 and 9 for English, Mathematics, Science and History. In addition to this, many other courses have draft syllabuses soon to be finalised that our teachers are also working from. The implementation of the new curriculum has provided our teachers with the opportunity to embed technology and literacy and numeracy while designing programs that cater for our 21st century learners, to engage our students in deeper thought and understanding of content and concepts. Our teachers have taken on this challenge and have been enthusiastically undertaking professional learning, and preparing programs and resources for next year.

The campus has received funding for a National Partnership in Literacy. The team, led by Sheree Gilchrist (HT Teaching and Learning), has worked to identify ways to further improve student performance in literacy and offer professional learning to teachers that encourages new and effective approaches. The focus of the campus will be on a program called ―Focus on Reading‖ that is a pedagogical approach to developing the skills required to read effectively. All staff will be trained in this program which is designed to assist students and allow a consistency in standards within the classroom. As part of this drive to continually improve the quality of our teaching and educational delivery, students have participated in a ‗Tell Them From Me Survey‘ administered again by Ms Gilchrist. This project was imple-mented to assist the school in obtaining data quickly from students which could further inform the teaching practices used in classrooms. We are utilising this ‗student voice‘ as a planning tool to develop programs that better meet the welfare and educational needs of our students. Further, I‘d like to thank the parents who attended the Year 7 and 12 Parent Teacher Evening. Feedback I received was really positive. I would like to encourage the parents of students to contact the school to monitor the progress of your child. It has been my experience that strong communication between parents, students and home only enhances the opportunities available for each child. I am really proud of the achievements and commitment of our staff and students and am consistently sharing this with our community. I encourage you to do the same. Brent Walker

Digi-Ed Claymation Workshop
Have you ever wanted to be a movie director for a day? Do
you love clay-animated films like Wallace and Grommet or
Chicken Run? Did you know Chicken Run took 5 years to
create? 24 students from our school each got to create their
own clay animated film in JUST ONE DAY!!
On 29th August 2013, 24 selected students participated in a Claymation workshop at BWSC Umina. The workshop involved the students, using the stopmotion / claymation process, to story board, animate (using the latest digital software), edit (adding of titles, credits & music etc) and burn their movie onto a DVD. All material was provided including eight laptops and Digital SLR Cameras and each student received their own DVD at the end of the workshop. Students developed their narrative writing skills and utilised aspects from the Creative Arts syllabus. The Digi-ed workshop has been a recipient of the FRATER AWARD for Excellence every year since 2005 that it has been available. The students involved were really well behaved and worked so hard all day. They really shone as film directors… and maybe next year you can do Claymation and produce your own movie too! Miss Price

Students have been busy this year with various
volunteering projects in the Community. We have
again joined up with the Graffitti Art Project
and students have been busy creating beautiful
street art projects to cover up unsightly graffiti
hotspots around Umina. The walkway next to
Coopers , Arty‘s general store on Ocean Beach
Road and the wall on the basketball courts at
school have all been enhanced through our stu-
dents‘ creative art work. Thank you also goes to
Miss Price for supervising these projects.
The partnership with Peninsula Village as a
result of our National Australia Bank Schools First
Award is also proving to be a success with stu-
dents working alongside the residents to produce
mosaics, teaching them to use iPads, producing
murals to beautify the Village surrounds, making
jewellery and next term students will be creating a
Bali garden in the grounds of the nursing home.

AECG Meetings 2013
AGM 15th October: 3.30-4.30pm Woy Woy PS
5th November: 3.30-4.30pm, BWSC Umina Campus
3rd December: End of year Special meeting
BWSC Umina Campus has a positive approach to behavior management with new focus and it‘s called Positive Behavior for Learning or PBL.
Its aim is to provide each student with a quality education in a respectful, caring environment that pro-motes commitment to learning and fosters positive relationships.
The first focus for PBL has been identified as entering and leaving the classroom. The following will be-come the requirement for all students when moving into and out of a classroom.
ENTERING THE ROOM Students must line up in TWO lines outside each classroom or learning space.
Students must not be in another person‘s personal space as they line up. When instructed by the teacher, the students enter the room in an orderly manner.
Students must stand behind their chairs until the teacher instructs them to sit. LEAVING THE ROOM
Students must stand behind their chairs at the end of the lesson, as instructed by the teacher. The teacher will then direct students out of the room in an orderly manner.
Yet another example of positive initiatives occurring within the school. Stay tuned for the next PBL focus.
PBL team.

BWSC students help out Combined Primary Schools
Sports Gala Days 2013
Every year the local Peninsula and surrounding Primary Schools hold two Sports Gala days. The first of
these days cater for years 3 and 4, while the second is for years 5 and 6. To assist in the seamless running
of these days students from Brisbane Water Secondary College – Umina Campus volunteer to referee all
games.
Year 7, 8 and 9 students from the Umina Campus went out to ref Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer, Netball, League
Tag and AFL. All up about 50 students went out over the two days. This was a great opportunity for these
students to demonstrate leadership skills, boost self-confidence and in many cases help out their former
schools.
All students were well behaved and represented their school with pride. A big thank
you goes out to all students from both myself and all the Primary School teachers for a
job well done.

Over 30 of our Work Ed students attended work experience earlier this term. Although many students stayed on the peninsula several went further, some
as far as Gorokan, Tuggerah and Sydney. All students gained something positive from the experience and the opportunity gave them some insight to their nominated career selec-tion. For some of the students it confirmed their ideas on career paths, for others it gave them part time work opportunities and a realisation that longer hours and getting up earlier than usual are some things they can look forward to in the near future. For some of our students work experience gave them a chance to do
something very different and out of the ordinary. Ryan Penn at-tended the University of Sydney and worked in megatronics - creating remote water pumps, whilst Kane Harrington took his juggling hand to welding. Samuel Lee mopped more floors than he ever has in his life at the Terrigal Pet Resort and Taylor Cox tried administrative and retail work. A special thanks to the compa-nies listed on the previous page who provided a fantastic learn-
ing environment to our young students. Congratulations to all the students who attended. You represented the school in a courteous and professional manner. After speaking with you all and seeing you in your workplace I know you gained so much new information to absorb. Well done!
