The Sri Lankan government is taking down notes on the Philippines’ programmes and services for its migrant workers’ sector. “We have a lot to learn from the Philippines [on how you treat your migrant workers],” Prof. Rajiva Wijesinha, the chairman of the Council of Asian Liberals and Democrats and a member of the parlia- ment, said during a press conference at the Dusit Thani Hotel in Makati City (Metro Manila) on Sunday. Wijesinha is in the country as part of the delegation of Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Jayaratne on the occasion of the Vesak or Buddha Day. He said that the Philippines provided “better servic- es” to its millions of migrant workers than Sri Lanka. Wijesinha noted the special lanes at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport, which aids faster docu- ment-processing for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs). “It’s the mechanisms that you have . . . the special lanes for workers. We should also recognize the contri- bution of workers by doing things like that,” he told reporters. The Sri Lankan official said that Filipino migrant workers are paid higher wages than Sri Lankans because “your communication [skills] are better.” Filipinos are known for being “excellent English speakers,” he added. Wijesinha also commended the Philippines for hav- ing “more coherent” training programmes for migrant workers than Sri Lanka. “We also need protection from problems… exploita- tion, etc . . . [we need to] empower our migrant work- ers,” he said. There are about two million Sri Lankan migrant workers around the globe. The Philippine Overseas Employment Agency puts at eight to 11 million the number of Filipinos working in various countries around the world. We have been impressed by Sri Lanka’s positive growth and economic figures.” The last one year had witnessed some remarkable developments with an exchange of high level visits by politi- cal, trade and business delegations. Bangladesh participated in various regional meetings, workshops and semi- nars in Colombo. In January Foreign Office consultations were also held after a long time, he said adding that President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s recent visit to his country had further cement- ed the bonds of friendship. The High Commissioner said that cooperation has also included coordina- tion on issues of common interests in the international arena, especially in the various organs of the UN. (News Now.lk) BY DILANTHI JAYAMANNE The Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council said the sit- uation of food preparation and hygiene in eateries had improved within the last few months. Chief of the Public Health Department, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said on Tuesday (17) that the PHD had found an improvement in food prepara- tion following last weeks raids carried out on eateries that pre- pared ‘kottu roti,’ in the Slave Island area. The numbers have come down from 37 percent at the end of December last year to fifteen percent of stale food samples by the end of last week. 31 food samples were taken last week and only five of them were stale. That would be 15 percent of food samples. Only one ‘kottu roti,’ sample out of ten samples was spoilt. This was because ‘godamba roti,’ taken to prepare the Kottu was stored in the refrigerator which also contained raw meat and other items at this particu- lar eatery. Dr. Kariyawasam said that one fish curry, one beef curry, one Chinese roll and one boiled egg had been stale from the samples that had been taken. The Staphylococcus and E.coli bacteria were found in some of those samples. He said the germs were due to the unhygienic conditions of food handlers. Some of those people would have had skin dis- eases while others would not have washed their hands prop- erly before food preparation. The accommodations of these workers also matter as most of them live in the eateries or bou- tiques. And most owners pro- vide tube well water for sanita- tion afforded to these workers. Tube well water is contaminat- ed, Dr. Kariyawasam said. However, he stressed the need for health check ups for employees in those eateries. Some of the other samples also had germs but they were within the accepted limits. There are varies accepted lim- its for varies types of germs. However, it’s best to eat the food one purchases from eater- ies as soon as it is prepared, he added. Dr. Kariyawasam said the PHIs and food inspectors were scheduled to visit the Vesak dansalas yesterday evening. It is not to take action against those involved but to observe the conditions, he added. Environmentalists, researchers and naturalists yesterday expressed concern about a website based in Europe, stating that indige- nous reptiles – snakes and tortoises and agamids –lizards – can be purchased in no time following an order. Sri Lanka’s leading her- petologist Anslem De Silva told The Island yesterday that when he got know, through fellow German researchers, that indigenous snakes were available in the foreign mar- ket, he in turn immediately informed the Department of Customs’ Biodiversity Head Samantha Gunasekara, Wildlife Director General Dr. Chandrawansa Pathiraja and leading Environmental Lawyer Jagath Gunawardena. “I was shocked to see that almost all snake species in Sri Lanka, particularly the venomous ones, which have a huge market, due to medici- nal values, were on that list,” he added. Animals like tortoises, lizards, crocodiles and python come under the CITES list while species like Russell’s viper and Cobra come under the Protected list. Environmental Lawyer Jagath Gunwardena said that though Cobra and Russell’s viper are not protected under the Fauna and Flora Act, there is no permission grant- ed for trade purposes.
