President of the Sri LankaCoconut Growers’ Association AntonFernando said that the low use offertilizer in coconut cultivation andthe inability to pluck nuts due toheavy rains experienced in lateNovember and early December hadcontributed to the shortage ofcoconuts and the subsequentincrease in prices.
He said that their members hadmentioned, during their meetingwith the Government, that if provid-ed a 50-kilogramme bag of fertilizerat the subsidized price of Rs.1,000,coconut growers would be able toreach their target of 3,500 millionnuts per year within the next threeyears .
Fernando said that at no time hadthey mentioned to the governmentthat if granted the fertilizer subsidythe coconut growers would be able todouble the present production of2,800 to 3,000 million nuts within asingle year.

The government, without dilly dally-ing, should clarify through parliament, reports that a UN Panel would be visit-ing Sri Lanka, to investigate allegationsof war crimes against the securityforces, during the last stages of the bat-tle against the LTTE, the UNP said yes-terday.
The party’s Matara DistrictOrganiser, Mangala Samaraweera MP,addressing a news conference inColombo, said that the MahindaRajapaksa regime, by not denying alle-gations that it had granted entry visasto the UN Panel, continues to keep theOpposition political parties and peoplein the dark, on a matter of nationalimportance.
Either, Prime Minister D. M.
Jayaratne or External Affairs MinisterG. L. Peiris, should informparliament when it meets forthe new year on Janaury 4, ifthe UN Panel had been grant-ed permission to enter SriLanka or not, he said.
According to reports, theUN Panel was to meet theLessons Learnt andReconciliation Commissionin Colombo.
Subsequently, it was saidthat the meeting would takeplace in a foreign country. The government was dutybound to reveal the truth, without playing to the gallery,he said.
Samaraweera praised
Senior Minister of Good Governanceand Infrastructure RatnasiriWickremanayake for beingbold enough to comment onthe true state of affairs with-in the Rajapaksa regime, while others have kept quietfor fear of losing their perksand privileges.
Wickremanayake, addressing a public functionat Raigamwatte, Ingiriya onMonday, said that some ofthe newly appointed SeniorMinisters had not been pro-vided offices andSecretaries.
He queried how the gov-ernment would face biggerchallenges, when some of its
Ministers are unable to perfom theirduty by the people.
Samaraweera said that the recentUNP Convention had united the partyand the stage was set for the UNP torecapture power in 2011, through“Peoples Power.”
He alleged that the External AffairsMinister G. L. Peiris had “lied” to parlia-ment, by claiming that Nepal hadsought Sri Lanka’s intervention toresolve its political crisis.
“The External Affairs Minister G. L.Peiris has become a liar with theNepalese government denying that ithad wanted the Rajapaksa regime toresolve its political problems. This hadhappened due to the disorganisationwithin the External Affairs Ministry,”he said.

The Colombo Municipal Councilwarned government institutions andschools that from next year it wouldnot stop at warning or sendingnotices but would take direct legalaction under the Mosquito Borne dis-eases Act. Chief of the Public HealthDepartment, CMC, Dr. PradeepKariyawasam said on Wednesday(Dec. 29) that that those institutions
and schools have been given enoughwarning and they had adequate staffto carry out regular cleaning cam-paigns.
There were 38 dengue casesreported this month, he said. Thecouncil was prepared to treat overtwo thousand dengue cases by theend of the year due to the influx wit-nessed during the first half of theyear. However, the timely intervention
of the security forces and the policeprevented a dilemma by bringingdown numbers to a total of 1,920.
Last year the city had 1,500cases. But there were 210 denguecases reported in December, 2009.This year however the council wasable to reduce numbers to 38. Thetotal number of dengue deaths in thecity last year was 30, while that toocame down to 19 this year.
The council had only five percentof the total number of cases in theisland. The remaining 95 percent wasspread out through the rest of thecountry. The Entire country had over33,800 dengue cases from the begin-ning of January till December 28.However a large amount of attentionwas paid to the city area where thesituation was under control, headded.
