Alexandrina Victoria (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901)

Victorian Poetry

• Age of queen Victoria.

• A significant development of poetic ideals.

• Poetry was considered superior than prose.

• Use of the sonnet increased as a poetic form.

• Influence of the Romantic Poets such as Keats, William Blake, Shelley and Wordsworth.

• Robert Browning was born in Camberwell, a suburb of London.

• Honored as a literary figure.

• Robert is perhaps best-known for his dramatic monologue technique.

Alfred Lord Tennyson(6 August 1809 – 6 October 1892)

• The poet laureate of the era.

• His lengthy poem In Memoriam is his most famous.

• He is the 2nd most quoted writer after Shakespeare.

• He is the most frequently quoted author in the Oxford Dictionary of quotations, such as

“Tis better to have loved and lost , Than never to have loved at all”, “Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die”

• Among Tennyson’s major poetic achievements is the elegy mourning the death of his friend Arthur Hallam, In Memoriam (1850). The personal sorrow led the poet to explore his thoughts on faith, immortality, and the meaning of loss:

“O life as futile, then, as frail!O for thy voice to soothe and bless!What hope of answer, or redress?Behind the veil, behind the veil.”

Elizabeth Barrett Browning(6 March 1806 – 29 June 1861)

• One of the most famous Victorian poets.

• Mentioned as a successor to wordsworth as poet laureate.

• She had a great influence on Edgar Allen Poe and Emily Dickinson.

Matthew Arnold(24 December 1822 – 15 April 1888)

• Matthew Arnold was considered one of the first modern poets of the Victorian Era.

• He was the superintendent of England’s schools for many years and was highly revered.

• Arnold was famous for his imagery involving the ocean and also themes involving women.

Christina Georgina Rossetti(5 December 1830 – 29 December 1894)

• Rossetti asserted herself as a great female poet of the era.

• Most famous for her poem Goblin Market.

• She was published widely until her death, especially in the pre-Raphaelite magazine “The Germ

Dante Gabriel Rossetti(12 May 1828 – 9 April 1882)

• He was an English poet, illustrator, painter and translator.

• Rossetti's art was characterized by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism.

• His early poetry was influenced by John - Keats.
