VEGETABLE WEALTH IN TELANGANA STATE (Crop wise, season wise)

➢ About 20+ vegetables are being consumed in Telangana state. Out of which,

top 10 vegetables being consumed are Tomato, Onion, Greenchilli, Bhendi,

Potato, Leafy vegetables, Ridge Gourd, Brinjal, Bitter Gourd & Beans.

➢ Telangana State is Surplus in production of vegetables like Tomato, Brinjal,

Cabbage, Cauliflower, Cucumber, Carrot & Radish. Surplus production is to

be converted in to value added products like pickles, sauce, ketchup etc.

➢ Similarly, Telangana State is Deficit in production of Vegetables like Bhendi,

Greenchilli, Gourds, Beans, Capsicum, Potato, Colacasia, Yam, Leafy

vegetables & Onion.

• Un-favourable conditions particularly during summer

season i.e., high temperature and depletion of ground

water.

• Low productivity due to non adoption of advanced

technologies viz., Micro irrigation, Fertigation, Mulching,

Shadenet, INM, IPM etc.

• High cost Intensive due more labour demand for various

operations i.e., weeding, harvesting, sorting & grading

etc.

• High post harvest losses due to more perishable nature.

• Lack of regulated markets & inadequate market linkages

• Frequent price fluctuations.

• Lack vegetable farmers federations.

Consumption Pattern of vegetables in

Telangana State

➢ More than 20 vegetables are being consumed in Telangana state.

➢ As per PJTSAU survey, the per capita consumption of vegetables (including onion)

is 250 gms per day, as against ICMR recommendation of 325 gms per day.

➢ Thus Telangana state population is consuming 75 gms less vegetables when

compared to recommended diet.

• Un-controlled & un-organized sowings of vegetables leading to either glut or lean in

supplies of vegetables thereby posing problems to the farmers as well as consumers.

• Generally, for tomato there is market Glut from Sept to April and shortage from May to Aug.

• Similarly for Onion; March to June is glut period and July/Aug to Oct/Nov is lean period.

• During the glut period, the farmers are not even getting their production cost and

undergoing distress sales and sometimes farmers do not harvest their crop.

• During lean period, the consumers are suffering with extreme high prices for vegetables.

• To optimize the vegetable prices for both farmers and consumers, crop regulation is to be

done by promoting crop colonies.

• Concept of crop colonies is computation of vegetable demand for a municipality / city /town

based on local consumption pattern and promotion of vegetable production based on soil

type, season & climatic conditions in cluster mode.

• Crop colonies are helpful in increased income to farmers with increased production and

productivity as well as ensures supply of vegetables to the consumers at reasonable rates

throughout the year.

• Identified farmers in the crop colony area will be encouraged for staggered sowing to avoid

market glut, the farmers can also get better prices for their vegetable produce and at the

same time consumers can get vegetables at affordable prices through out the year.

14

Why - Vegetable Crop Colonies

14

Page 13: DEVELOPMENT OF VEGETABLE CROP COLONIES · 2020. 2. 10. · 26 Dadra and Nagar haveli 0.17 2.71 16.41 Total 8724.36 157153.01 18.01. VEGETABLE WEALTH IN TELANGANA STATE (Crop wise,

Aim: Ensuring continuous supply of vegetables to the consumers at reasonable rates

throughout the year simultaneously ensuring increased income to farmers.

Objectives:

i. To meet the required vegetable demand of a Municipality / City /Town from its own

surrounding villages of 100 Kms radius.

ii. To minimize the import of vegetables from other places in to Municipalities / Cities /

Towns so as to ensure better market price for the vegetables produced by local farmers

iii. To increase the income to the Telangana vegetable farmers

Approach :

✓ Assessment of vegetable requirement for major corporations, based on local

consumption pattern worked out by PJTSAU, Hyd.

✓ Mapping of areas based on soil types & availability of water resources including

human resources

✓ Identification of specific crops & particular varieties based on soil type, season &

climatic conditions cultivation in colonies mode.

✓ Expansion of vegetable area in surrounding districts/mandals

✓ Encouraging for staggered sowing of vegetables in the season to avoid market

glut, so that they can get better prices for their vegetable produce.

• In Hyderabad, consumption of leafy vegetables is less. Hence, need of the hour is
