marvel comics solicitationsmarvel comics solicitationsmarvel comics solicitationsmarvel comics solicitations The Avengers vs. X-Men and their related tie-ins, Avengers Assemble, and Spider-Men come to an end paving a way to a new status quo for the Marvel Universe. Marvel is building the foundation for the next decade of stories after the current one began with Avengers Disassembled (2004) and ended with Avengers vs. X-Men (2012). The Ultimate Universe transitions from their Divided We Fall story arc to United We Stand. The Scarlet Witch and Hope face off and the extra-sized final issue of Avengers vs. X-Men results in the death of a major character. After appearing at the end of the Avengers, Thanos is reintroduced to the Marvel Universe with two collected editions Thanos: Final Threat and Thanos Quest where the latter serves as a prelude to the Infinity Gauntlet. The summer event of the Marvel and Ultimate Universe crossing over concludes in Spider-Men #5. The final issue of The Punisher leads into October’s Punisher: War Zone. Jeph Loeb and Simone Bianchi conclude their Sabretooth Reborn epic in Wolverine #313. Mark Millar begins his second arc Nemesis 2 #1 from the perspective of another Nemesis. Marvel collects key issues from the past two decades including Avengers #500 (Avengers Disassembled), Amazing Spider-Man #546 (Brand New Day), Uncanny X-Force #1, Captain America #444 (1st Mark Waid Captain America) as well as other in Marvel Firsts: ReEvolution TPB.

Batman: earth one hcBatman: earth one hcBatman: earth one hcBatman: earth one hc

Batman: Earth One hardcover is released the same month as Christopher Nolan’s final installment of his Batman epic The Dark Knight Rises. The success of J. Michael Straczynski’s Superman: Earth One raised the expectations for writer Geoff Johns and artist Gary Frank’s Batman: Earth One graphic novel.

The first 10 pages have only a few words of dialogue which were used to showcase Gary Frank’s art as well as Geoff Johns’ storytelling and pacing. Mayor candidate Thomas Wayne meets with Alfred Pennyworth who once saved Thomas’ life. Alfred is hired for security after the upcoming election. But now the Thomas wants him family and his son Bruce to enjoy a normal life and goes to the movies. Shortly afterwards Bruce witnesses the murder of his parents. After 20 years Bruce is seeking closure for the death of his parents by going after the people responsible.

The city of Gotham is unforgiving. They have killed the Waynes, Gordon’s wife, and now have kidnapped his daughter Barbara. The kidnapper is the Birthday Boy who resides in the Arkham home where Martha Arkham lived. The basement of Arkham is home to deceased teenage girls killed by the Birthday Boy who is hired by the Mayor. Batman goes after Mayor Cobble Pot who defeats him and unmasks him. Alfred arrives and ends his life. Alfred and Bruce build up the legend of the Batman as a new villain asks the question ‘Who is Batman?’ foreshadowing the coming of the Riddler in Batman: Earth One Volume 2. Geoff Johns attempts to cram so much mythology within the 130 pages of the book without having to explain to the reader how or why. What is the connection between the Arkham house and the Birthday Boy? Majority of the characters within the Batman mythos are emotionally weak except for Alfred who appears as the mentor for Bruce. Johns takes for granted the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises film will raise interest in his book. Besides Green Lantern and the Flash, Johns has a hard time establishing other DC characters in his other titles including his previous work on Superman, Aquaman, and recently Batman: Earth One. Now Jeph Loeb is back building on what has already been built on those two writers. After tracking down Romulus, Wolverine heads towards the Weapon X Facility still active with a clone batch Sabretooths. RECOMMENDED – 4 OUT OF 5

The Punisher is presented into another alternative Marvel Universe in the four-issue Space: Punisher which reimagines the Marvel Universe as a galactic crime saga. Marvel went through a period of too many limited series that were set in continuity however the alternative universe series Marvel Universe vs. Wolverine was nominated for the prestigious Bram Stoker Award. Marvel wanted to produce high quality content that are special and not connected with current continuity. Artist Mark Texeria brings an alternative Marvel Universe to life with Space: Punisher. The Punisher plays a rogue Space Ghost and Buck Rogers character with the help of his sidekick Microchip. He faces a symbiotic-infected Brood, the Rhino, Barracuda, and the Starjammer Corsair. The Punisher walks into a bar with Thanos, Annihilus, and Jango Fett searching for information about the Six-Fingered Hand consisting of the Sym-Brood Ant Queen, Dr. Octopus, the Green Goblin, Magneto, the Red Skull, and Ultron. The issue ends with the Punisher facing Sabretooth, Deadpool, and the Leader. These limited series gives Marvel to explore another take on their heroes without devoting too much resources or promotions for an ongoing series. The series is more art than story however the curiosity to see Marvel characters in a different setting and universe gives the series unlimited potential compared to the regular Marvel Universe. RECOMMENDED – 4 OUT OF 5

The hundredth issue of the Walking Dead hits after nine years and two season of the hit series on AMC. The issue changes the status quo for the foreseeable future as survivors do not only have to worry about the walkers around them however also the people living in the communities around them as well. A core member of the group meets his end after nearly 100 issues. Robert Kirkman teased the introduction of Lucille and the leader Negan finally makes his appearance making the Governor look like Mickey Mouse. A violently graphic and intense issue which sets the stage for what’s coming up. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED – 4 OUT OF 5

As part of the Summer of Valiant, Bloodshot returns with a bloody first issue after his debut in November 1992 on the same day as the Death of Superman. The next Valiant issue to debut is Archer & Armstrong in August followed by Armstrong’s brother the Eternal Warrior in Winter and Rai in the Spring of 2013. The Bloodshot character is a weapon used in the military agent for special missions. However as the series unfolds Bloodshot will become an intricate character in the Valiant Universe. The Amazing Spider-Man begins with Richard and Mary Parker leaving their son Peter with his Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Richard is a scientist who covers his tracks and erases his black board before he and his wife die in a car crash. The movie is fast-paced, action-packed driven storyline. The first hour sets up Peter Parker and the cast. The second half of the movie begins the transformation of Dr. Connors into the Lizard and his relationship with Gwen Stacy. After watching the action-packed Avengers film in May, The Amazing Spider-Man is an emotional, heart-felt film bringing the character back to its Marvel roots however lacks the suspense needed to surpass the first Spider-Man trilogy which was release only 10 years ago.
