DEVILS DEFENSE DOOMS ELMIRA, 3-1

Trenton, NJ – Behind a stifling defensive performance in which Trenton held an opponent to fewer than two goals for the first time this season, former Jackal Brad Miller scored the game-winning goal in the second period during a five-on-three power play to propel the Trenton Devils past the Elmira Jackals, 3-1, Wednesday night. With the teams tied, 1-1, in the second period and the Devils on a 59-second five-on-three power play, Miller sniped a wrist shot past Daren Machesney after taking a feed from Ryan Ginand, giving the Alpharetta, GA native points in all five games he’s played in a Devils uniform this season.

After dropping both meetings at Sun National Bank Center against the Jackals this season, the Devils had complete control in the opening minutes, punishing a Jackals team that had not played since December 18. Elmira weathered the storm, however, and eventually took the first lead of the game with Corey Cowick potting his first goal of the season.

Cowick’s goal came by scooping a rebound away from Justin Pender after Dave Caruso made an initial save on Josh Brittain’s drive. It was the only goal the Devils would allow Wednesday night though as Trenton held Elmira to 19 shots against in the game.

The Devils trailed for less than three minutes all night, with Dan Charleston scoring Trenton’s first marker on a wraparound, beating Machesney with 1:00 remaining in the first period. Assisted by Kory Nagy and Taylor Vichorek, the tally was Charleston’s first score since returning to Trenton from AHL-Albany December 26.

Miller cashed in on the power play with six minutes remaining in the period to put the Devils ahead for the first time, 2-1. Each of Miller’s six points (2g, 4a) with the Devils have come on the power play. Ryan Ginand’s primary assist extended his team lead in assists (18) and points (31). With Ryan Hayes getting the secondary assist, he extended his point streak to nine games, and has 14 of his 23 points in that span.

Elmira managed 11 of its 19 shots in the third period, but goaltender Dave Caruso and the Devils’ defense stymied the Jackals’ third ranked offense. Jeremy Akeson sealed the game with his second empty-net goal this season with 47 seconds remaining in regulation after Caruso played the puck off the glass and out of the zone onto the stick of the streaking Akeson. The assist was Caruso’s first this season, and the 11th in his five-year pro career.

Noteworthy for Trenton was the performance of Taylor Vichorek, who contributed his first point since December 4 by assisting Dan Charleston’s goal in the second period. The 6’8, 250-lb., Moose Lake, MN native also blocked several Elmira shots and engaged in a fight, battling Elmira’s Brett Gallant in the first period.

Winners of three of their last four, the Devils improve to 12-13-0-2, and have a chance to get back to .500 before New Year’s when they tangle with the Florida Everblades at Sun National Bank Center on Friday at 5:00 p.m.

The Devils conclude the calendar year of 2010 with a New Year’s Eve contest with the ECHL’s leading offensive squad, the Florida Everblades. Trenton and Florida split a two-game series at Germain Arena in November, with Ryan Ginand scoring twice to pace a 3-2 Devils win November 23, and Bobby Goepfert becoming the only opposing goalie to shut out Trenton this season in a 3-0 Florida victory November 24. Florida is 1-1 in its last two games, having split a pair of decisions at Sovereign Center against the Reading Royals earlier this week. After the Everblades won Tuesday night being a Matt Pistilli’s game-winner in overtime, Florida fell in Reading last night, being done in by Ryan Cruthers’ goal late in the third period.

The Devils will be without J.S. Berube for the time being, as the rookie was reassigned to AHL-Albany Friday morning. Third on the Devils in scoring, Berube has 18 points (10g, 18a). During last season’s Calder Cup Playoffs, he made his professional debut with Lowell.

Led by 68 points from Scott Bertoli in the regular season, Trenton tied the Reading Royals for first place in the National Conference’s North Division with a 42-21-9 record that season, earning its fifth playoff berth in franchise history. With a plucky goaltending duo of Andrew Allen and Chris Houle, and a defense led by current assistant coach Vince Williams, Trenton eliminated the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, Reading Royals and Alaska Aces in the first three rounds of the playoffs, setting up the final-series meeting with a very formidable Florida Everblades team.
