OVERVIEW OF CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT (CESDEV),

UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN, NIGERIA

The Center for Sustainable Development (CESDEV) was established by the University of Ibadan in May 2010 as a demonstration of the Universities commitment to Sustainable Development. CESDEV happens to be the only University in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa offering the Global MDP (Masters in Development Practice) program; an interdisciplinary and professional course. Equally, the University is among the three in the whole of Africa offering the Global MDP program. CESDEV aims at integrating economic, social, cultural and environmental objectives in development. The Centre has thus emerged as a platform for promoting compelling alternative to conventional approaches to Development, a participatory, holistic and inclusive process that engenders Sustainable Development.

BACKGROUND OF MASTERS IN DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE PROGRAMME (MDP), CENTRE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN,

NIGERIAThe Masters in Development Practice (MDP) program is a flagship of the Development Practice Programme (DPP). The University of Ibadan fully subscribes to the MDP philosophy on Sustainable Development as discussed in the MacArthur Foundation Higher Education’s Commission’s Report. The

MDP program offers a broad-based multidisciplinary curriculum aimed at holistic training and empowerment for the next generation of African leaders. The MDP requires full-time enrolment of graduate-level students for duration of 22-24 months and includes the following core disciplines like health sciences, management sciences, natural sciences, general studies and social sciences. The University of Ibadan is one out of the ten Universities that won a competitive grant involving over 70 institutions across the globe to launch the Global MDP program in 2010. The Global MDP consortium now comprises about 30 Universities in different continents out of which 3 Universities are from Africa, University of Ibadan inclusive.
