360° video for VR can provide exciting new immersive video experiences when captured with special high-‐end video equipment containing at least twelve individual cameras.

The production of 360° videos for VR viewing experiences, requires special stitching and post-‐processing algorighms to provide a full stereoscopic viewing experience.

The playback of 360° VR video is available on an emerging array of devices ranging from smartphone and cardboard based solutions up to high end VR headsets like the Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR or Sony’s Morpheus VR headset.

CAPTURING STEREOSCOPIC 360° VIDEO

360° media contents like panoramic photos or videos are popular for quite some time. Most of the existings contents however can be viewed only in 2D. The recent popularity of virtual reality and the emerging availability of VR playback devices makes it now possible to deliver full immersive viewing experiences based on stereoscopic 360° video (﴾S3D)﴿ to a broader audience. To create S3D video special camera equipment is required to capture all the necessary details. High-‐End 360° VR cameras are equiped with at least twelve independent single cameras to be able to capture the full environment in 360°. DEXPERIO VR is providing the required eqipment and services for the capturing of stereoscopic 360° video.

The production and publishing of 360° VR video content is based on Axinom‘s Over-‐The-‐Top (﴾OTT)﴿ portfolio. It provides a scalable, efficient workflow for delivering and protecting premium video across desktops, devices and the digital home. A Hollywood studio-‐ and DECE-‐approved solution, Axinom allows customers to extend audience reach and enable a broad set of business models, including rentals, subscriptions, and downloads, both directly and through syndication and distribution partners. DEXPERIO‘s VR portolio extends Axinom‘s OTT solution with the VR video capturing and encoding capabilities as well as playback capabilities on a range of new VR headsets.

360° VR VIDEO –PLAY EVERYWHERE

Virtual reality has made exciting progress over the past several years. However, developing for VR still requires rather expensive, specialized VR headsets. Thinking about how to make VR accessible to more people, a group of VR experts at Google found a way to use a smartphone to drive VR experiences. Custom cardboard set transforms a smartphone into a basic VR headset and allows customers to deliver custom branded and inexpensive VR headsets to the consumers. The DEXPERIO VR Explorer software will support all major VR headsets. In addition a smartphone-‐based player suitable for custom-‐made cardboards and headsets -‐ also provided by DEXPERIO VR -‐ is available.
